I was not raised in a church as my parents believed in science. I went to First Parish at a dark…read moretime in my adult life and have been there for over ten years. I found a community of belief consistent with my own: the free exploration of religious beliefs, the focus on "dwelling in peace" with all, sharing the commitment to making the world a better place for all people, One of my only regrets in life is that my children did not get a UU education. This, I believe, would have protected them for the negative values in our culture, especially the ones adolescents have to cope with. I have found good people, made close friends, and found a Church home. In addition our present staff could not be better. The administrator, our building and grounds manager, our pastoral care associates, our musical director and most importantly our minister are outstanding. Going for the music or sermons alone would be worth it

Also, children who go through the religious education program will learn about the world's major religions and about having strong and healthy relationships in life. Good stuff. I highly recommend it!

The music director is a pianist who goes on tour to Europe in the summer. There's lots of outreach opportunities including monthly outreach-dinners to mentally and emotionally handicapped adults (since 1984), Uganda orphanage, Mexico orphanage, New England Seafarers Mission, etc. The services are broadcast on the local community access channels. Small group gatherings during the weekdays help enhance the experience. The Pastor is very knowledgeable on theology and presents thought-provoking sermons. The denomination is the same as the High Rock Churches, Evangelical Covenant based in Chicago. The denomination is affiliated with the Pilgrim Pines Conference Center/Camp Squanto in Keene NH. If you are looking for a place to explore Christ's love in your life, this is a great place for you and your family. You can really feel Christ here.

I'm a little confused about how to write a review about a church, but I'm going to give it a try…read more I grew up in this church. I could list all my activities, but I want to write about Follen. Follen was always a place for me to have a community of adults and kids older and younger than me that I wasn't related to. I have heard the phrase "it takes a village to raise a child" and Follen was my village. I'm not sure I see myself going to church ever again in my life, attending services or that sort of thing, but I'm sure in the hypothetical someday when I have kids, I want them to have access to this type of community. There were so many ways to interact outside of the religious aspect - especially the youth group I was in in high school, and the choir, and the well-done sexual education program. And the religious aspect wasn't overbearing by any means - we're UU for crying out loud. I still remember my favorite sermon I ever heard - it was titled, "it's not okay to say you can't play" which was about children, and adults, learning how to include people. Things like that always leave their mark and I carry it with me in my life. So I don't know who will read this review, but if you're looking for a church where people are fun and just looking for other people like them who really care, about everything, then I wholeheartedly recommend it.
