Despite recently painting the shop a rancid orange colour, Harun's remains the best takeaway in Southport for you to greedily stuff your mouth with greasy goodness in the early hours of the morning. The food there is well made and delicious albeit not particularly cheap (damn you Southport) and the staff there are friendly and will happily talk with you for hours about good Turkish footballers (believe me; it happens every week when we go). They also have a punching machine in there (perhaps to curb the violent enthusiasm of the Southport residents) which causes much hilarity at three in the morning when my mates decide to show each other who can hit something the hardest. I am not talking lukewarm or tepid, but as cold as a sandwich bought from a chiller in a supermarket. GIven the turnover of products, and the very mainstream products we ordered, you would expect them to be warm-ish at the least. Very disappointed and alienated, given their food prices have gone up, while their quality control standards appear to have disappeared.

Okay, so Southern Fried Chicken doesn't win many points for originality or creativity with its name, but it does make up for this with the general good quality of its food. Their chicken is, as you might expect, pretty tasty without excelling at the ancient art of chicken in batter too much, whilst their chips are pretty decent as fast food chips go. As well as chicken and chips, Southern Fried Chicken also sells burgers and pizzas which although makes the name somewhat misleading does give the menu a bit of variety. Their burgers are pretty well-cooked and priced but their pizzas aren't the best; quite why you'd go to a place that champions chicken so much when you want a pizza I'm not sure, but there you go.

It has a large car park on site which never seems to get full, even on a Sunday. The interior of the pub looks expensive, well maintained, clean and tidy. The decor is homely and comfortable. When you enter you are asked to wait there to be seated, it took a minute for someone to come and see us but when they did we were quickly shown to a nice table, presented with our menus and our drinks order was taken. The pub is very spacious, with a lot of tables for diners, and comfier area's for people who are just there for a drink. When we were there the football was on, but this only resulted in a distant cheer (or boo) every now and then, and didn't disrupt our evening. The menu has a lot of choice. There is a carvery available 7 days a week but there are also many other options available. I went with my parents who are both pensioners, and as they were members of the pubs "Diamond Club" which is for the over 50's, they were able to get 2 courses for a mere £6.25. This includes the carvery which is usually £7.25. After agonising for a while I chose the "'Brown's of Kirkconnel' black pudding and bacon fritter. Topped with red onion chutney and a poached egg" for starters. This was possibly the best black pudding I have ever tasted. It was rich and succulent without being overly fatty. It was so delicious and just the right size for a starter. For my main course I chose the Ultimate Burger - "Hand pressed Farm Assured Saxon British beef burger and half chicken breast, topped with melted Taw Valley mature Cheddar, smoky chilli bourbon sauce and crispy onions. Served with hand cut potato wedges." This came on a trendy square plate and looked very impressive (and huge) when I was served it. This was simply divine. The burger was delicious and the bacon and chicken were cooked to perfection. The wedges were also delicious and very moreish. For pudding I had Gingerbread flavoured Penna cotta with a homemade honey wafer. I've never had Penna cotta before but I thought I'd give it a go. It was so delicious, creamy and indulgent. But at the same time it was light and refreshing. I was actually sad when I finished the desert as I wanted more! The service at Five Ways is excellent. You don't have to wait long for your starters to be served, and once the plates are taken away the main course is brought to you quickly. The same happened when we ordered our deserts. The staff are friendly and very helpful. They are happy to chat and crack a joke whilst taking your order. They keep an eye on you whilst you are eating, coming over to check everything is perfect with your food, and taking orders for further drinks. I had an excellent meal here. I had previously only had the carvery but I thought I'd try something else and I was glad I did as it was amazing. I can't fault this place at all.

The desserts are utterly indulgent. Magnificent morsels. The chefs know a thing or two about cooking, no doubt. The Fiveways has the advantage of being close to the farming areas of Ormskirk and Burscough, so its produce is probably much fresher than a lot of other places. Restaurants that is, let alone pubs. Whenever I've been the service has been really quick and friendly. Like Hex P my mum's also a pensioner (sorry mum) and she's a member of the Diamond Club - any over 50's get two courses for £6.25, which is a real bargain considering the calibre of the food.

With reasonably priced lunchtime meals (standard pub grub - scampi, burgers etc.) as well as bottomless soft drinks and free salad bar this is a great place to fill up on padding before heading off to conquer the nearby Lady Green garden centre or even just to retire to the pleasant beer garden outside. As a pub it's a little more problematic - located at the Hightown end of the Formby Bypass, too far from civilised society to really pop in for a pint, drinkers are left with a quandary; forgo the booze and stick to the refillable lemonade or get a few alcoholic beverages in and call a taxi home. As Ned Flanders would say, it's a dilly of a pickle.

We visited at lunchtime to take advantage of the 'early bird' deal they have, which is a meal for between five and seven pounds and also includes unlimited trips to the salad bar and unlimited drink refills. The salad bar was standard fare, including the usual suspects such as potato and pasta salad as well as a range of dressings. Whilst it may not have been original, it was tasty and did the job of satisfying us until our main meals arrived. For my main meal, I ordered a chicken burger that came with barbecue sauce and melted cheese but when it arrived I found it to be somewhat of a disappointment. The chicken itself was nice enough, if a little dry, but that could have been down to the pitiful amount of barbecue sauce applied (nowhere near enough for a BBQ addict like myself) and the cheese was quite cold and was fairly solid, suggesting it was not melted but merely thrown on at the last minute. Whilst I wasn't particularly enthralled by the presentation or taste of my main meal, I did leave the Red Squirrel feeling particularly full after filling up on the salad bar and for the price the meal was available at you can't complain too much so I would definitely consider visiting again.

Name issues aside though, Busy Bee specialises in the usual chippy scran - fish, chips, burgers and Chinese, as well as kebabs. Their Chinese dishes are decent but not a patch on nearby Poon's, which I'd highly recommend. On the chippy side of things, whilst the food they offer might not be anything ground-breaking, it is nonetheless still made to an excellent standard. Their chips are slightly crispy on the outside whilst remaining deliciously fluffy on the inside and the fish is always a lovely golden colour. The burgers usually take a little bit longer but are worth the wait, offering a nice alternative to the usual suspects that are available. Rumour has it that Busy Bee has many fans in the nearby police station and if it's good enough for the local law enforcement, it's good enough for me.

Better than Southportonians, I guess. As it is, a better name for The Sandgrounder might have been some phoenix-related as a few years ago it was gutted in a massive fire, only opening up again fairly recently. Despite this, The Sandgrounder continues to be a popular destination for those on their way to the pier or on their way home as they stop off for some fish and chips. The shop itself is very much built for customers to buy their scran and take it away with them, as the shop only has a service counter and a bit of space inside for customers to wait in for their order. Thankfully, the staff there are pretty efficient with their service so you're never waiting too long, but if it's not a very nice day (which happens quite often) then you'd probably be better off looking for one of the fish and chip restaurants down the road. On a nice day however, it's a pleasant enough place to get a bag of chips and sit on a nearby bench and watch the world go by as the food is pretty decent and most of it isn't too expensive.

I feel that I have to agree with my fellow yelpers and state that Brough's Butchers in Formby…read morevillage sells the best meat I've ever tasted, ever, in the whole wide world. Fact. With the increasing popularity of supermarket deli and meat departments, it is nice every so often to visit butchers like Brough's and buy some great quality meat, when approaching the great British barbeque season in particular. I have recently bought a great selection of sausages whilst there which included award-winning honey sausages that were lovely as well as some delicious chorizo sausages that I cannot wait to buy again. They also do brilliant cuts of beef and various flavours of chicken which put Tesco's hot chicken counter to shame, representing great value for money. So, if you're in the area, I strongly advise you visit Brough's for your meat requirements as their food will leave you always wanting to go back for more.
