Cut to present day Im in Copenhagen at a butcher shop highly recommended by Yelper AJ who lived here for a while and shopped here for his meats. Medisterapolese, merguez, bresolinni, were some of the meats we had to munch on outside in the square after hitting the cheese shop and bakery, a few doors down. The workers wear old school uniforms and hats to impart a time long past. Super helpful, I got into a discussion about the Medisterapolese with one butcher and I knew this place was going to be awesome. Is it weird that I can carry on a long convo with a butcher about the charcuterie arts? As predicted, fabulous meat products and it's also good to know my own butcher makes a very comparable product.

Their toulouse sausages are well worth the price (can't exactly recall, but about 10 kr each?). They also have cured meats and pate. Because of the considerable price mark up on most things there, however, I only buy very specific things: 1. Grassfed meat (they often have sales on Grambogård pork and meat) 2. Naturmælk whole milk (3,5%) natural yogurt 3. Aalbæk Quality Meats (Jalapeño Chorizo is my fav) 4. Cheddar cheese (the real kind, might even qualify as "sharp"), and various other stinky french cheeses 5. Cofoco's Supermarché Frozen French onion soup, with real stock (for hangovers, try it) 6. Pecans, once a year, for pecan pie 7. Seafood (their fiskefrikadeller are awesome, as is the homemade remoulade) Best idea is to go here with cash in your pocket, otherwise, it's entirely possible to buy the whole store.

When I entered, I felt that time stopped over there. Things were a little bit unorganized and random. The interior is very boring and besides smørrebrød and sandwiches there was nothing interesting. My first impression wasn't that good, but I will focus on the products here. I went there around 11:00 and there was only a few open sandwiches left. I chose one with English beef, dry crispy onion, remoulade and pickle. Then I got also one called spring smørrebrød, which was actually bread with cream cheese, chive, onion and spices. Both were ok, but I didn't feel good to buy such perishable stuff in the very hot weather we had at the time. If you need a fast snack here and now and you feel like smorrebrod I would do it again. But if you have a bike with you, I would go for smorrebrod to Ritz (200m on Jagtvej) and if you need a good, freshly made sandwich I would definitely go to Pizzicato (Gammel Kongevej). And it's bigger and has more selection than the location on Halmtorvet to the east. Here you'll find everything you'd expect from a grocery store with a reasonable amount of variety. Plus there are additional things like home goods and sporting goods. They even have bikes for sale. Now I don't know why you'd want to buy a bike from a supermarket, but you can! We bought a lot of groceries here and also at Netto during our trip. Some prices at Netto are slightly better, but SuperBrugsen also has some marked down items. So they're more or less equivalent overall. Either way, if you want to save some money and not be eating out every meal, there's no shortage of supermarkets and smaller grocery stores around Vesterbro to choose from!

Maybe due to my high hopes, I am a little let down. The selection is not bad and the prices are only a tiny bit higher than the ethnic markets in Vesterbro (which has become my benchmark for Asian food prices and selection in Copenhagen), but it's not WOW. There is a fairly substantial shelf of Chinese pickled vegetables and condiments to go with morning congee, and it has all the basic sauces and seasonings you'd want. The frozen section has wonton wrappers, spring roll wrappers, and shrimp as you would expect. In terms of food, it doesn't really have anything more than what you'd find in other Asian shops. The shop has other specialty items such as Asian beers and alcohols like Hite Beer, soju and sake. They also have cookware from simple things like bamboo steamers to fancy electronic rice cookers. The shop owner is also super friendly. While I was in there, one woman did not have enough money to pay for all her items, so he just told her to come back next week with the money. It's a good shop for Østerbro and I don't think there's another like it in the nearby area, but it's no comparison to the options that are available at many shops in Vesterbro.
