This path goes through lots of woody/ grassy areas where you will be able to digest a whole appetizer and entree of bugs if you aren't careful. I know they are supposed to be high in protein, so I guess it's your choice but I doubt it would be all too enjoyable whilst trying to navigate the path. 2. Mind where you are going! Mountain biking paths are extremely narrow, and meant for one bike to go at a time, certainly no more and no less, so there's a very minuscule width to navigate through, and any small miss maneuver could have you running into a tree (like my poor mother did, don't tell her I mentioned it on here) or crashing. And we definitely don't want that if we can help it. This is an awesome bike trail, all things otherwise said!! Forum Tower Loop is the bike trail belonging to Lions Conservancy park, which winds right along the Red River and goes for approximately a mile. There's another trail on the other side of the river which is in a different park. An awesome addition is that there is a map of this trail, as well as a QR code you can scan while there, which uploads an electronic map and some other useful information right to your phone. There are small signs nailed on various trees all throughout the trail, and orange flags or spray paint when there aren't signs to help you stay on track. It's a great help. If you are more advanced, the trail does feature some trick spots, where there are jumps and other cool things (I stayed FAR clear of these). For being in Fargo, this bike path was surprisingly beautiful. As I mentioned, it goes right along the river and it's hilly and woody, so it's about as good of views as you can hope for. We also spotted a deer and some turkey, and I mean that's pretty prime nature viewing! This is, North Dakota, after all. XD If you're looking for something fun and different to do in Fargo (because let's be real, people are looking what to do in Fargo often bc there's not much) and a way to get exercise, definitely come check this trail and the other one out!!

Connected with the MSU-Moorhead Science Conservatory, this is a location where many local school kids come during the spring and fall and summer for science learning. I like it - it's only about 20 minutes from the city.

We went on an evening cruise and decided to try and explore a little bit, and ended up at Lions Conservancy Park, which is only a mile or two from our neighborhood. What I didn't realize about this park, though, is that they have some amazing mountain biking paths. It was so much fun! Lions Conservancy backs up to the Red River, and the bike path goes right along the river so it's hilly and woody and so cool. There's another path on the other side of the river in nearby Iwen park. The path is also super user friendly. At the beginning there's a map of it, and even a QR code you can scan to access the map electronically, and boy is it helpful. There's also constant markers on the path so you know you're still going the right way. For those who are more seasoned with mountain biking (ie: not me), there's some built in jumps and fun challenges. I stayed way clear of those, because just trying to make it along the path was plenty enough for me. It's about a mile total and it really gets you sweating. So besides the beautiful paths, there's really not a lot more to Lions Conservancy. You can sort of see the river from the parking lot. You can't walk far without being swarmed by bugs and other. But what a beautiful and delightful little path! Certainly not for the faint of heart but all the better when you complete it!

This relatively new state park in Minnesota is a treasure -- a beautiful example of Minnesota lake…read morecountry with rolling hills, forests, creeks, trails and camping. I hiked a few miles towards the end of the day and saw an eagle swoop down to grab a fish out of the lake. I shot photos of birds that I had not seen before and a young buck hiding in the birch forest. A variety of wild flowers were in bloom. Be warned that you need to apply insect repellent since ticks abound. There are both paved and unpaved path, and it is obvious that the park was well-planned. There is even a cemetery for pets. It's a must visit if you are in the area.

I stayed at Glendalough with my girlfriend and some friends last year in the winter time. We…read morestayed for three nights, I think, in one of their spectacular cabins. The cabins are easy to get to, and although there was a ton of snow that year, it was pretty manageable to deal with the cold, and very warm inside. You just pull or push a cart with your gear to the cabins, which aren't more than a half mile or so. The cabins have four bunks, a great table, a bench, and other amenities. They are amazingly cozy and comfortable and can easily accomodate four or more people. We did a bunch of snowshoeing while there and the park is beautiful, even in the winter. Everything was sort of frozen in time and the amount of snow made snowshoeing a real adventure. I fell down a couple times and had to be helped up. Anyway, I would certainly recommend Glendalough any time of year, but their great cabins make for a nice winter getaway as well. There is some neat history and several lakes here also that would be a lot of fun in warmer weather.

After a few days in a tiny, rural North Dakota town, just about anything other than staring at the…read moreclouds and putting on more mosquito repellant sounds like a great time. My dad-in-law suggested that we might check out a spot about 60 miles away in Minnesota on the Red Lake River that offered tubing. I've done the lazy river a few times at the Great Wolf Lodge, but I gotta tell ya... this sounded a helluva lot more exciting than what we had planned for the day-- so we loaded up the truck, gassed-up in Grand Forks, and headed across the Red River. After a little negotiation with Waze, we finally found our way to the Voyageurs View Campground and Outfitters... it sort of looked like an Outback Steakhouse, except there were more cars in the "lot" (OK, a large field of grass where the cars were parked), and there was a Canadian flag flying along side the Stars and Stripes. We walked over to a small window on the side of warehouse, paid some money, got our wristbands, and then walked over to an open bay where we were "outfitted" with big black innertubes. "They's the best for a'floatin' boy!" The company retrofitted an old school bus (by painting it blue, chopping off the top, and installing bench seats instead of kid's seats), and we climbed aboard to take the couple mile drive upstream to the put-in. The river flow had been really high a few days previous from intense thunderstorm activity, but the flows had backed off enough for us to go. I've done my fair share of stream fishing, wading in chest high in places like the Truckee River, the Yellowstone River, the Snake River... well, the Red Lake River wasn't quite as tough as a couple of those spots at different seasons... but it was kicking pretty good when we went. I had a tough time keeping my 6 year old son and my 79 year old father in law upright in the river, holding on to their tubes, and trying to wade out towards the middle of the waist-deep river to hide behind a little island before putting out butts in and floating the rest of the way. With a little perseverance and a pretty good scrape on my ankle from a submerged rock, we all made it. The first little "rapids" was the most exciting... just don't hit the bridge embunkment... and then it's a fairly smooth float all the way down. Along the way, there are some very pretty views that I got on my GoPro (I'll put them on here eventually)-- old riverside buildings here and there, but mostly nature. The sheer bluffs along the river are home to swallows who make their nests out of mud, and we saw a few turtles, catfish, wading birds and waterfowl. Somewhere towards the middle of the float trip, there is a shallow spot and a little sand bank that has formed an island... there, we were able to see dozens of Minnesota twenty-somethings wearing tiny little bathing suits, drinking plenty of beers, and participating in some sort of ancient pre-mating rituals. Breathtaking, I tells ya. Somewhere towards the end of the trip, I thought I'd get a little adventurous (if there is such a thing on a flat floating river) and try to go over a couple of little ripple/rapids. All I really did was hit my butt bone pretty hard on a submerged rock, but wasn't the end of the world. The river slows down a lot right at the end where you get out, and when we saw the bridge to signal the end of our float, we all paddled over to the left without incident. Overall, we had a great time as a family, the kids enjoyed the adventure, and we would totally do it again. Next time, I'm bringing a few more cold ones (you can rent a second tube for a nominal fee to hold your cooler!) And I might bring my aquashoes just for the entry, as it was a little rocky. But we'll totally be back to do this again some time.
