Having both performed and been audience to events at the 'E-Gre', I can attest without doubt that it is one of the finest acoustic and performative spaces in North America, if not the planet. The on-site tech department is very 21st century as well. How do I know this? Because my personal experience of performing there was not acoustic -- rather, electroacoustic. Very demanding electronics requirements are needed with such a performance. Our computer, midi, microphones, Disklavier, theremin and A/DSP's were QUICKLY connected and placed accordingly. At the end of our sound check, The sound-E informed us that he had us set up for DAT recording (surprise surprise!) if we felt so inclined. Formidable technicians, let me tell you. The 'E-Gre' also includes (for your pre and post performance pleasure) a couple of dressing rooms, a green room, guest room for a conducter/VIP, and a full rehearsal space, so you can get your sound check done right. The E-Gre is just short of 400 seats, but whoever fills them is lucky. The overall ADSR 'envelope' created by the standing waveform complex inherent to the space will make you drool. Sweeping glissandos, clipped yet soft-edge pizzicatos, bass that threatens to inundate yet keeps just enough away... piano, solo woodwind and strings are the sweet instruments for E-Gre. Do go. You will thank me. The Rosza may also show up on your 'radar' due to its ability to hold conferences. I have not experienced this yet, although I have attended a number of lectures and events -- the most recent being Wade Davis' invocation of the spirit of his Massey Lecture. Stunning ambiance, with an intermission space which is comfortable yet large enough to accommodate catering and book sales. I encourage anyone interested to may a point of experiencing the RC. She knows her crowds extremely well and picks music that suits the needs of the event. The prices of all the DJ packages are listed right there on the website so you can easily compare them to other companies. There are many different packages including services both manned and unmanned, light shows, and music for the ceremony, dinner and reception. Yesterday we had face painters and a juggling magician for our Corporate BBQ and Family Day at Heritage Park, and these guys were a big hit. I'm pretty sure they painted about 200 faces, kids and adults alike (they painted a fabulous glittery gold butterfly on the right side of my face). The juggler/magician - extremely entertaining. Funny, engaged the kids in his act, wandered from table to table getting everyone involved, definitely will be bringing this crew in again. I think Festival Hall is a remarkable venue, because it seems both so out of place and so perfect for the neighbourhood at the same time. The building is by no means extravagant - a brick cube that could very well be a small apartment. You'll almost pay no attention to it, wondering if you've gone the wrong direction until you get close enough to read the sign on the front wall. It blends into its surroundings without so much as a parking lot to indicate there's a concert venue in the area. Inside, the 200ish seat space is comfortable and intimate. The performance area is a large cube room with some brilliantly subtle touches that prevent it from sounding like a small gymnasium. Large soft curtains at the back to absorb sound, angled walls, ceiling and attractive roof trusses break up sound and reduce echo and keep you focused on the performance. The space works well for unamplified performances - I was most recently wowed by Cowtown Opera's ability to fill the space using nothing more than vocals and a single piano. I've also seen several roots / blues acts here and the space sounds excellent at the higher volumes of drum kits and electric guitars. Another cool feature is the versatility of the space. Without fixed seating, they are free to setup the room to accommodate the needs of any performer. With a full-house the foyer can get pretty packed at intermission and I quickly find myself seeking some fresh air. You can order any kind of beer as long as it's Big Rock, which is a-ok by me! Drinks are also permitted in the performance hall which is a nice touch.
