Jam’s Diner - Pastrami Sandwich

Jam’s Diner

We went for Saturday afternoon happy hour because the website and sign out front says it's every day from 2-6. Turns out, at Jam's, every day doesn't include weekends. We did raise this, they offered 10% off drinks as compensation, and later offered the full happy rates, but only 10% was assessed on the bill. No big deal. The place was pretty empty (should have an afternoon happy hour!) which I think took away from the retro, diner vibe the place seems to be going for. Service was friendly and attentive. It has a slightly limited menu however they make a lot, including it's pastrami, on site so I get it. We had a broad range of menu items, all excellent, especially the fries and pastrami sandwich. They offer gluten-free for many items which is also a plus. I think I'll be back, this time for breakfast rather than happy hour.

Inside had a really good vibe and there was a live band playing. Food is really good here but service is a bit slow. I don't think they anticipated the influx of people dining due to Sunfest being outside. Maybe if you come on a regular day it would be better. My wife and I ordered the Smash Burger and it was really good. You can tell they use fresh ingredients. My son ordered the mac and cheese (his goto) and it looked pretty good to. Great location in Inglewood. Just super slow on this day. It took an hour for our food to arrive. But the food was great.

Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show

Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show

We had tickets to the day show & watched the rodeo, bull riding, bareback riding & steer wrestling…read more I loved the venue but couldn't wait to take a Tylenol. The grandstands were packed there wasn't a seat to be had. Behind me were boys that continuously kicked the back of my seat, hit me in the head a half a dozen times & shrieked on my ears. The big men in front of me wore big cowboy hats that blocked my view. On a positive note we were in the shade.

We just moved to Calgary and therefore this was our first year for stampede, which runs for 10…read moredays. I bought the family a full pass so we could all attend, therefore as long as we attended at least three times we were not losing money and we literally visited eight times?!!! It was incredible - every single day was a different thing to focus on, I'm so glad we had so much time and I feel so bad for people who are visiting from other countries or cities who only come for one day. It's impossible to pack it all into one day. I am a horse fanatic so my favourites were the chuckwagon races, the rodeo, the barrel races I love those cowgirls! they are spectacular, eating at Ranahans was unbelievable -probably one of the best meals I've ever had my life, touring the livestock stables, the motorcycle tricks, peoplewatching, meeting that 7 foot stunning cowboy with his SHIRT OFF !!!! SHOWING OFF HIS SIX PACK!, of course the food was amazing at the midway, the kids enjoyed the rides, even the dog show was incredible and to tell the truth I don't really like dogs. I think it was called super dog. It was at a venue which is normally an ice rink, I think it was in the BMO centre I highly recommend. Probably however the very best thing about the whole event was seeing the Calgary Stampede Marching Band six times! They perform daily on the steps to the saddledome. They also perform by marching through the site, and also they are in the first day parade. The Calgary Stampede Marching Band is something that I had heard about literally within my first week of moving here, all the other parents in high school were saying I should get my kids into it because they played clarinet and guitar. I asked my kids and described it and talked it up big time...... and they said no thanks. Then representatives from the marching band showed up at their school and fortunately my younger son was very very attentive and focussed and came home immediately to say oh my gosh I have to join this marching band! Now two months later he is in it and he's been practising for two months and he is doing his first performance publicly in a month, he's never even been in the marching band, I can't believe how much this has improved and enriched our lives just this one thing. All thanks to the stampede. The only negative thing I have to say is the horrible grandstand show, save your money and don't bother. The lady who was the MC- Rachel Avery- managed to brag about 12 times over the course of the evening that it was her grandfather that started at the grandstand show... quite clearly she never would've got that job if it weren't for nepotism. So much bragging it was unbelievable. She says she's a world famous actress living in Hollywood so literally while I was sitting there I googled her and she's only been in one movie I've ever even heard of and I'm an epic movie buff, and her part didn't even have a name ,,,,, it was something like "girl at the bar." WoW you are incredibly famous, can I get your autograph? What is DeNiro like? Congratulations we're all really impressed down here I must say!!!! Plus as a tribute to Gord Downy from the Tragically Hip they played the song "Ahead by a Century" and it has literally ruined the song for me for life, I always hear in my head that Liberace wannabe doing it in Vegas lounge lizard style, plus I guess the show was running short so they told him to double the song and he literally sang it twice. It was not double the pleasure I promise you it was actually very very painful to listen to especially because I've heard the Hip perform the song in person 12 times so I know how the singer is supposed to sound PS If you are looking for a restaurant locally; Whatever you do, NEVER go to the Calgary restaurant The Guild. The insane manager literally called the police and tried to put me "under citizens arrest" for accidentally knocking over a glass of wine- see my full review here https://www.yelp.ca/biz/the-guild-calgary

We came with a school group and they did an amazing job with their educational presentations, it was fun and informative, and even my little guys were entertained with the performance. We also really enjoyed the fish feeding experience and seeing the sheer volume of fish that are hatched and raised here is eye opening. They take care of their facility and are careful with cleanliness here too and it really shines. Doing a scavenger hunt and learning to identify different kinds of fish in the lower fish tank areas. And these older fish really did seem like they were listening to us if we stopped and talked to them- that was probably the fishiest part of our visit! Fish talking lol And upstairs the displays are so well done! Lots to see and the video that was playing was really great too. Learned a ton here!

A quick note on pond fishing:…read more As of this writing... it's $5 to rent a rod including basic tackle (no personal bait allowed). Additionally you will need a WIN card ($8) and fishing license (1 day = $27). So total of roughly $35 that you buy online at https://www.albertarelm.com/licensing.page . The pond is a modest catch and release pond for kids. More of an educational experience just to cast and reel. So you won't exactly haul in bucketloads of trout. $20 weekend classes every Saturday for 2 hours. Requires reservation. Seasonality applies - you can check their website beforehand.
