Always amazing finds at the location of Goodwill in Tacoma, some what near Defiance Park and Zoo. When I visited in August was able to pick up a great 3 T haul for my beautiful fun granddaughter. Then when shopping again in November picked up a little 3 foot Christmas tree to display my mini Starbucks ornaments and a Red Buffalo Plaid Christmas-y dress for that same granddaughter. What a great newer reason to shop! So yes, this is a well organized store I would recommend! read more

This Tacoma Goodwill is much bigger than the usual Olympics & Rainier stores, and although it has kind of a kooky and non-intuitive layout, it's an interesting one to browse through! It seems like two separate spaces were combined into one. While they reorganize it every now and then, clothing and shoes are generally in the front section, and furniture, art and seasonal stuff is in the back section. During the holidays, they have a TON of Xmas stuff (trees, ornaments, decor, gift wrap). In years past, they've also had a pretty good selection of holiday sweaters, if that's your thing. Because the footprint is so large, they can stock a LOT more housewares and furniture here than a typical small Goodwill store, so you can always find a bunch of couches, tables and chairs here. They also have a fairly large book selection compared to other stores. The interior is older and a bit run-down, and the way they organize the different departments is a little random, so you really just have to wander through the whole store to see what they have -- the layout doesn't follow any other Goodwill I've been to. If you enjoy the treasure-hunt aspect of thrifting, you will love browsing through this big Tacoma location! read more

Like right now. I just returned from this store. It isn't even 5 pm. and I was there 1/2 hour ago, they are closed!! I am not surprised. Their hours are willy-nilly. I asked one of the workers when I just caught the donation center open at 5:30 pm. last week and I said, aren't you open until 8 pm. weekdays and he replied, "it just depends." I think it's the manager of the donation center. The workers are all very helpful and pleasant. I wouldn't rely on this store to donate. read more

The male cashier with glasses at goodwill is one of the most arrogant and rudest people that I have ever met. I have been to goodwill many times in the past and each time I have been there, I noticed his general attitude seems to be extremely negative. The establishment in general isn't necessarily bad but this cashier drags the entire experience down. It's also sad to see how Goodwill has raised there prices. They really aren't benefiting those in need with these price increases. While they seem to put a lot of clothes out daily. It makes it hard to go through when certain sections are so full that you can't even go through it without breaking hangers. read more

I must question the I don't give a crap attitude of the employees here. I have donated quite a lot to many different locations in different states over the years. But dropping off quality things in good or great condition and seeing the way they are handled, is extremely upsetting. My last drop off included three boxes of very nice China and several boxes of brand new unused Christmas tree decorations. I told the attendant what was there, he threw them in the bin and proceed to throw other items on top. I heard things getting crushed and mentioned it to him. ABOUT 30% OFF DONATION RECEIPT I live in Bellevue. But I was in Tacoma last night. On my home way home, I happened to find this store. So I donated an item that I had in the back of my truck (that I was intending to donate to the Bellevue store). Anyway, their donation receipt had a coupon for 30% off any single donated item. So I went in and bought two exercise mats and a roll of painters tape. ABOUT RETURN POLICY & KARIMA The clerk who checked me out, Karima, was friendly well above and beyond that of an average clerk at any store. Don't let the foreign sounding name fool you. She speaks perfect English. When I asked her what those rolled up mats were, she answered that they were exercise mats (I bought them to put on my new kitchen tile to help keep the white grout clean). She also told me that I could return them within seven days, just so long as I leave the price stickers on them and have the original receipt (although only for store credit, not a refund). My point is, not only is Karima also knowledgeable about Goodwill store policy, but that also Goodwill has a fairly generous return policy for used donated items. ABOUT THEIR MONTHLY CALENDAR Like all Goodwill stores, this store has copies of a monthly calendar of when they have their various colored tag sales. According to there May 2017 calendar, they have (for the remainder of May) green tags items for $1.99 on May 21 and May 22, and $.99 from May 23 until May 25. Also, from May 21 until May 27, they have 50% off yellow tags. On May 28 and 29th, yellow tags are $1.99, and only $.99 on May 30 and the 31st. Red tags are 50% off from May 28 until May 31. The Manager blatantly broke state law and said she didn't care and she did not have to follow the law. Her name is Tammy. She refused to let me use the restroom even after I told her that I had a medical condition and by law she was required to allow me to use an employee restroom if there was no public restroom. I pulled the law up on my phone and offered to show it to her and read it out loud to her and she refused to look at it and said she did not have to allow me to use the restroom. She was smug and snotty about it, as was the cashier i spoke to before her. They have public restrooms behind curtains that have been closed since covid. They have just chosen not to re-open them. So Tammy thinks she is exempt from following state law. Goodwill supposedly helps people with disabilities...not this one!! read more

Not a destination thrift store, this newer satellite branch of Goodwill is hit and miss. Definitely skip if you're searching for furniture. Best selection is in the book department. The prices can be high on some items, and extremely insconsistent. I would visit the Goodwills in Federal Way and near Tacoma Mall before this one. Both have deeper inventories. read more

I feel kinda bad giving a Goodwill less than 3 stars and I just don't feel right giving a Goodwill 1 star but this Goodwill is really not one of my favorites. Everything is in it's respective section but most of it is either hanging haphazardly off the racks or on the floor. I agree with Jay S in that this is not a destination thrift store. I remember the first time I went here. I thought I found a jackpot since I found a lot of great quality items in apparel, electronics, furniture, and videos, but the past 2-3 times I've been, I've just kind of stopped by since I usually go to the Sonic over there. I decided after this last time that I'm going to stop by here. Especially since they have all but gotten rid of the video section and the men's apparel is a joke. Don't even bother looking at the furniture since you'll probably be wasting your time. And I'm like....let's be real....just because it says American Eagle or Abercrombie on the label doesn't mean that it should be $29.99. Understandably, it's way cheaper than buying the name brands at the store but I'd rather get a brand new pair of jeans for the same price or a pair on clearance at a store. And some of the name brands are like old school like Ralph Lauren or Perry Ellis or like Abercrombie from like the early 90's. Let's be real! read more

this is the absolute worst goodwill i've ever been to. I went to get work clothes and finally found the perfect clothes after searching for so long. I get to the line for the register and there's 3 workers behind the counter just looking at me. I walked up to a register and they go "ya we are cash only" I said "so you can't take card at all" and the guy with the glasses goes "ya that's what i just said" shouldn't you guys tell people as they walk in youre cash only? I came here looking for furniture... Mistake #1 They have nothing in good shape or even worth browsing this store. The prices are sky high for used items. Id rather sped a few bucks more for new. I did find 2 winter coats that were in good condition but still a little expensive for a USED coat. Went to pay for my coats... Mistake #2 Got outside and looked at my receipt... the girl rounded up my total for their charity without asking me. It isnt much but very inappropriate and bad business practice. I almost went back in for my $1 but I just reminded myself to never shop a Goodwill again. This isnt about this specific store but.... My mother used to work for 3 Goodwill stores in Los Angeles. Believe me, its a scam. They treat the employees like crap and tell them they cant leave the store on their lunches (unpaid). They get people and businesses to donate free items to make a profit. They dont contribute anything substantial into society. In addition, your donations and purchases go to paying the former CEO's salary for life, huge 6 figure salaries, astronomical bonuses for upper management and scholarships for their own children. It is clean and well laid out- that is the positive part of this review. However EVERY. SINGLE. TIME I go into this 6th ave store, I get mildly irritated by one of the male floor workers. I feel poorly for complaining, because I believe he is on the spectrum of autism. However, he follows me around and continues to ask for "high fives" and "hugs." When I say, "No thank you," he will leave for a couple minuets, but then come right back and repeat his request. I understand that he is disabled, and there may be a communication issue between us, but it is uncomfortable to be constantly followed and have your wishes for personal space be ignored. This makes me never want to thrift at this location. :( read more

I came to this Goodwill just to see what they had. The store was really organized and clean compared to other Goodwills I have been too. Thrift shopping is typically hit or miss in general, but I was actually able to find more than I usually can find. I'll go back in the future to see what else they get in! read more

They picked through my donation pile, happy to take the clothes but rejecting both a cheap toaster ("look at these crumbs in here - that's a fire hazard") and a lamp ("lampshade's busted - we don't take broken things"). When did Goodwill start carrying cheap, low-quality new stuff -- the sort of thing you find at a dollar store? I mean, that's what I go to the dollar store for. Goodwill is for used things. Goodwill receives two stars because they help with job training and placement for those in need and I respect that. They also have some homegood items that are new and never used which you don't see in many second hand stores. They also have sales tags. However, I have visited several Goodwill locations and for some reason I am never pleased, probably because in my opinion they are overpriced. This specific location does not have helpful staff. This location is one of the dirtiest I've seen. The carts have dirty fast food and coffee cups in them and they barely function. There were people just lounging on the couches and chairs they had for sale! They had a few small flat TVs and I was excited because I was expecting a really good deal, but as I got closer they were really scratched up and were priced between $130 and $160 like seriously? these aren't even 32" TVs. You can find a brand new TV that's bigger in stores for this price. I usually try to buy a couple of things when I visit a Goodwill location because I know that my money will help someone in need. Unfortunately I did not purchase anything from this location and probably won't visit again. read more

We made yet another attempt to donate to the 6th ave. Goodwill. Usually they only take donations ( when they feel like it) when they have input staff available. I understand. With the millions out of work people would actually rather sleep on the sidewalk than work here, for " job training" ..which they take MORE donations inside at p.o.p. , for job training..anyway. for the 3rd (and last ) time, we attempted to make a donation. The other 2 times our donation didnt live up to their standards!! This last time i tried to make a specially made donation from my art studio workshop. I collected various things that " scrappers" ( people that make journals, as I do) would love, and pay a lot of money for. Filled with vintage colored tickets, a handful of antique and vintage ribbon, antique music pages, antique french dictionary pages, original mother goose book illustrations, scrabble tiles, wall paper and italian handmade papers, to name just a few. The clear plastic tub weighed almost 20 pounds. Taped shut so stupid people wouldnt plow through . Asked for the manager when they said " we cant take pages removed from books, and the scrabble tiles would get thrown out because its not complete, and the tickets also would get thrown out along with the reciept books ( from a wisconsin pie shop from 1950!) I tried in vain to help them understand that people like me would find this to be a treasure trove they said we just cant take it. We would throw it out. I said i was going to yelp them. I believe there is NO one in goodwill any more that know what the current crafting trends are. Or. For anything. And if it isnt made in china they dont know what it is. Just awful customer service. Inside and out, wont go back. Not the only donation spot in town. read more

The prices are a bit more for home items, brick brack are never clearly marked which presents an argument at the register if you are going by the prices on the displays and they are comparing marked up items with unmarked items. In general compaired to other goodwill locations things are expensive here. If you decide to shop here and take your kids with you watch them super careful because there a ton of child molesters/kidnappers that frequent this store and will stalk you and your children around the store boldly and will not go away. If you leave your child unnattended they will definitely try to lure them. If you are a young female take your boyfriend with you because as I said there are tons of pervs here. I know this because every time I am there I have an issue with one and there are many others circling like sharks. Ironically the best time to go is at night when there for whatever reason are not as many appparently pervs have to get up early in the morning or something. BTW I dress pretty much like a freaking nun all the time and my kids are always glued to my side so it's definitely not me. I also don't encounter this issue anywhere else besides Wright Park where I don't go. read more

I have shopped at Goodwill's around the United States including at Athens Georgia and Cherry Creek in Colorado as well as Sioux Falls in South Dakota and above all Goodwills the Tacoma six Avenue is the bomb.com I have bought $300 jeans they're in their luxury section for women so many times that I have a closet worth $4000 now it is worth going if you're looking for high-end clothing I have talk to the people that work there they themselves also purchase these clothes and resell them online like I do on posh Mark to make money so I don't know why people complain other than they're not looking for the right kind of purchases I've also bought all my home goods including suitcases as well as $300 couture handmade silk shirts and ballgowns from this goodwill location we frequent this so often that it doesn't even feel like a goodwill it feels like regular store boutique and that's why they have the blue boutique and we don't even go to that one just the regular Goodwill! read more

VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE: This is not the same store, we'll geographically it is but it is well let's say under new management. Since the last reviewer this store has gone under major renovation and now has a home section that is fully stocked and killer and it's other side, the traditional clothes, electronics, and books/media is now actually a place you will want to be and shop to find thrift treasure. Staff is ok for what I imagine they are paid but goodwill is the last real non profit thrift store as VV stinks of corporate layout and lack of Imagination. I'm not saying your going to find rare Picasso sketches but you will find your hidden vintage Patagonia or 90'S era butthole surfers t shirt! Place is worth it if your a reseller, picker or thrift store addict like me. read more

There are a lot of ridiculously priced items at this location, but there are also some neat, reasonably priced items if you are willing to take the time to look for them. This is the first secondhand store I have been in that actually has electronics plugged in so that customers can see that they work. Great book and housewares selection. read more

I normally take my donations to Value Village and will from now on. The guy working the donation station was slow to come out and then was the most unhelpful person. It took them forever to retrieve a bin, came back with one that one that was mostly full, for an entire hatchback full of items. They then watched me unload everything (burying items in the bin) and then decided they couldn't take some of them, and had me dig them out of the bin, after watching me bury them in the first place! And they refused to take my toaster oven, that was used, but scrubbed out and clean. I have seen down right gross items at that very goodwill, but my scrubbed, working toaster oven was too "grimy?" The toaster was fine, Iain was not. Moral of the story: take stuff to Value Village instead. read more

Love the idea of Goodwill, the CEO makes millions and we (the buyers) and employees get crumbs off free donations. Still shop here when there are no other thrift stores closer, because I believe in recycle and reuse instead of filling the landfills. As far as Goodwill stores go, this is a pretty decent store; i've found some good bargains here before, and hopefully will in the future.

The Goodwill is a garment treasure hunters best friend. When in search for the best deal in town on both name brand & plain Jane apparel, everybody knows that this chain will get the job done. After a few visits to this location in particular however, I am not impressed. The level of customer service falls well below many of the other establishments I've visited. It could be the area, a more somber part of Tacoma, but the associates are of no use being there other than name tagged mannequins. Asking simple questions will get you a finger pointed in the opposite direction. This one doesn't have a designated $.99 rack that I found to be very enticing at other locations. Organization is definitely up to par but overall selection is 'meh' at best. My favorite brands to look for at these establishments are Hollister & Abercrombie, as these brands are a clear representation of the donation affluence. I would not recommend going to this location unless you're looking for something to buy your step father, the one you can't stand and wish death upon. Better yet if you don't have any style or styling preference plus quality of donation doesn't matter at all, this location is perfect. Happy hunting. read more

Every single time (3 or 4) I have gone into this particular Goodwill, I have had a terrible experience... I have been to plenty of thrift stores over the years, and it is generally a "fine" experience. It is a thrift store, afterall - you don't expect much. I understand that the Goodwill is working to train people who might otherwise have a difficult time getting a job and I wholeheartedly support that. I have donated PLENTY to the Goodwill. It is this particular Goodwill that is really missing the point. Today, I ran in to find an outfit for my son to wear during a speech at school tomorrow. He is supposed to dress like a rancher from Montana in the 1850's. I found some grey wool pants that would fit and looked the part, and a plaid flannel shirt. Perfect. I went up to pay and the cashier said, "I'm sorry [at least she apologized] but I can't sell you these pants. They don't have a price tag." That was odd because I swear I had looked at the price, but whatever. They were probably between $3.99 and $9.99 and I didn't really care - I just wanted the pants. I asked if there was someone that could price them by comparing them to a similar pair on the rack. I explained that I needed them for a costume tomorrow. She said, "No, they have to go to the back and get repriced." I asked to speak to a manager to see if something could be done. I explained my situation to the manager and she said, "We aren't supposed to do that. I will give them to you for $5.99, but if you shop here and there isn't a price tag, we can't sell it to you." The implication was that I had maybe pulled the price tag off myself. Trust me, I did not remove the price tag. Customer service in this store is a negative five stars. The staff are rude and are not in any way interested in keeping customers happy. I will never go into this store again. There are plenty of others around when the need arises. I hope that the management that is running this store reads this review and revisits their policies regarding customer service. (The store on 38th and the one in Gig Harbor are MUCH better.) read more
