She shared that it used to be an old dairy barn and they had a shop & restaurant in the main barn space, an Iowa local shop out back, and an antique treasure shop upstairs. She did mention that if we wanted to dine or sit for coffee, we needed to let her know ahead of time so they could reserve a table space, so keep that in mind if you're planning to stop to eat! We stayed in the main barn area and browsed the local shop finds. They had everything from Iowa-made wine, knife sets, honey, clothing, crafts, artwork, jewelry, and Iowa-themed goodies. If you are shopping for unique local gifts, this is the spot to visit! The shop workers were SO friendly and sweet!! They also made me a delicious caramel latte to go on my way out. The parking lot was basically a field of weeds and there were thugs on the roof on the south side. When I walked in a group of 4 mutually diverse teens looked at me and I felt in my gut that they would attack me. I sped walked inside and quickly observed that a pizza place and a Chinese restaurant were feeding many starving people. I walked further more into the main area of the mall and got rammed by the security guard. Although he didn't physically touch me he touched my soul with his words and it cut deeper than a knife. "You can't go this way" he said. I asked to speak to his manager but he refused. I then stormed out of the mall angry as a goose with my tail feathers a droop. I just didn't like this place. Gave me the heebee greenies and I fumbled around disoriented as I screamed at the sky "why!?" I just wanted to see a mall.

The woman who was running the shop was shuttling clothes that I had pulled off the rack into my fitting room throughout my shop and was just so friendly and exuberant, while also giving me the space to shop and peruse at my own pace. I ended up getting a staple kind of black/gray denim button up shirt that will be great for the fall and spring weather and for layering throughout the colder months! I also got two sweaters that had a fun corgi print on them to gift to my corgi-loving friends! Directions and Hours: This store is ONLY OPEN the first Thursday through Saturday of every month. The first day needs to fall before the Thursday of that week. (For example, if April started on Friday, the store wouldn't be open until the proceeding week. If April started on Monday, it would be open that week). The store is located BEHIND Simpson's Furniture on Main Street. It's a bit tricky to find, but you'll end up seeing a tiny sign on the property. Turn onto E 23rd street, and even when it turns into gravel, KEEP GOING. Go until the gravel "ends" then turn right. You'll quickly see Hatchlings and Hen's signage. The store itself is down the driveway. Long Version: This is a neat, home-run type of store. As far as I can tell, it seems to be a small shop in a workshop. The directions above will help you find it. The area feels like shopping a garage sale - but in a cute and fun type of way. No bathrooms or anything because of that. Hatchlings and Hens sells a variety of neat, repurposed and vintage-esque type of items. It looks like a lot of items were repainted or cleaned up in order to be sold, and the owner does a surprising job of finding fantastic sets. For example, there was a kitchen table with a matching 4 chairs available for purchase (only $175 for the set! I would have bought it if I needed a kitchen set). There were also other sets like matching bird decor or awesome wall art. There was some industrial-type of furniture and whatnot too - as well as industrial salvage that might help you out if you were looking to do some DIY for yourself. I didn't end up purchasing anything today, but I plan on coming back in the future. The owner was super friendly, and I really did fall in love with a coupe things that I can't quite think of a place for at the moment.
