Salvation Army Family Store - On the right side of the shopping center near the new KFC

It is perhaps unfair to compare this branch of the Salvation Army thrift store chain with a larger,…read morewell-run branch I have shopped at in Portland, but a comparison is inevitable if you have been to both. This poky little store carries a variety of items to browse through and is worth a look, but it doesn't strike me after several visits as being very well run. I have never witnessed a staff person in the store itself except at the register, and have not spoken to a pleasant cashier as yet, though I am sure they must employ one or two. My wife uses a walker at times, but when we shop she uses a shopping cart as support so she can leave the walker behind. On one of our recent visits, even as restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic are gradually being relaxed, the cashier stated we could not take the shopping cart outside the store because she needed to wipe it down for the next customer. I can sympathize if they have no one to gather carts from outside the store, but it seems odd to require customers to carry their bulky purchases to their vehicles, especially those like my wife who have trouble with walking unaided at times. Luckily I was with her. We will probably shop at this branch again, but in the short term I would discourage anyone with physical issues from shopping there alone.

I've been visiting this location for 7 years and it's always disorganized and messy. Truthfully, I…read morethought it was fun to dig around for things for a while. The store itself has taken a sharp turn for the worst though. Half of the items in the store aren't priced clearly or at all anymore. That means that I usually get lots of stuff taken away from me to be reprocessed out back when I go to the register. I get the same spiel about not being able to price things on the spot, company policy, sorry for the inconvenience, and to come back to the store in a few days and the items might be back on the shelves again. The employees at this store are overworked and have no support and are not empowered to do right by the customers that Salvation Army relies on. Frankly, they all look like they would rather shoot themselves than be at work and take forever to get anything done at all. There's mountains of donations out back but they can't actually sell any of it because of the constant state of disorganization and endless cycle of processing or reprocessing. The four tin containers that I wanted to buy from Salvation Army for my craft room were removed from my cart because they weren't priced and needed to be reprocessed. That was 6 days ago and those tin containers are still sitting behind the register gathering dust. It's frustrating to have the money but be denied the actual purchase because of ineptitude on Salvation Army's part. I will not come back to this location again.

I was about to give this ReStore branch a merely fair 3-star review, but I decided that my reason…read morewasn't really fair so I added a star. I will say why below. Anyway, we are in the process of expanding our living space and will need a few additional sticks of furniture, so we drove to Bangor to check it out as part of our periodic trip to "the big city." Their items are in one large warehouse-looking space. They had a good variety of items: furniture, housewares, tools and building supplies, and so on. They had a lot of new tools and painting supplies. Not sure why - items they didn't use for one of their house builds, maybe? The tables and bureaus we checked out looked a bit knocked about for the prices they were asking, but we are used to thrift store or similar sources, and prices are higher everywhere these days in our current economy. We will probably check back at some point if we don't fill our needs elsewhere. We bought a few smaller items, however, with prices that were more in line with what we expected. The "unfair" reasons I mentioned for almost rating it lower was twofold. We lived in Florida for several years by mistake (because of the hot summers and the local politics), but there was a ReStore we really like there and went to often. There was a showroom area made up of several rooms containing separate types of items. There was also a partially covered outside area where there was more furniture and building materials. With no snow or frigid temperatures they can get away with that. The second reason I was less impressed had to do with the entire strip mall. There is no restroom in any of the ten or so businesses in this strip mall. So if it takes you an hour or more to get there like it does for us, you may need to stop somewhere else first if you need a pit stop. But it is all for a good cause and certainly worth a return trip if we need to.
