My most recent activity with Food Bank for the Heartland was with my company's leadership building group (Pathfinders), and our volunteering task was packing meal kits for food-insecure students. Our activity leader from the Food Bank was very informative and understanding with any mistakes made by our group or questions we had. You can tell they really care about the mission of the organization, in every step of the process. We each had certain jobs in an assembly line situation, which made it a lot easier to do everything in the correct order so the little meals are packed in the best possible way. If you volunteer with a group of friends or coworkers, you can have fun, while doing good for others. This organization does great things for the community, and are very worthy of your financial contributions or volunteer time!

Large snowstorm slowed things a bit, but we were notified that there was a delay and the volunteers did a great job of getting everything organized especially in the face of this winter storm. I have participated twice. Both times, I received items that were inedible. The total cost of the items if I would have bought the exact same thing at the store averaged $13-15 bucks. The difference is I would have been able to choose items that were in good condition. The items are NOT locally grown but come with stickers ready to go to the grocery store. Some of the items were from overseas. This place is a waste of time and money as well as a HUGE disappointment. I stop by often on my lunch breaks, and there are usually 2 or 3 carts of "new" merchandise being shelved. The carts are where to find the best deals! The store is very clean and very organized. Most children's clothing is $1.59, which is a decent deal to begin with, but there are also two different tag color sales running weekly - one being $.49 and the other $.99. I buy everything from books, DVDs, housewares, clothing, linens... The most I've paid for an item is $9.99, and that was a pair of like new Nike AirMax 90s. My kid was super excited! Check it out! This saddens me and breaks my heart especially when you are working with small children and fragile minds who can be easily manipulated. And trust me they are very good at being able to do this with these children. And if these children who in this day and age have been taught don't talk to strangers and never allow anyone to touch you, when the children don't respond to their questioning or allow them to do a physical exam they automatically conclude its because they have been abused. REALLY? Is this really how you see this in this day and age and how advanced things are that you can't see beyond wanting to draw your own conclusions because of your own egos. Yes some children do need help but focus on them and stop making up stories and conclusions and making new victims from imagination. People need to trust you not feel they have another enemy to protect themselves against.

He turned 10 and wanted to hold the bush baby Benji, it was truly the best day ever for him. He has the encounter with a great staff member, Gina, and also the otter LuLu. Over all the encounters were fantastic, but it is a little slow. It's a sprawling sanctuary for animals. There are dozens of different animals to pet, and look at. Not every cage was open anymore compared to previous visits, so that was sad. It's a hodge podge of sheds, trailers and kennels/fencing for the variety. Again it's not really for me, but I can see the appeal for little kids and the animal lovers.
