I have rarely had true hard times in my life until I moved to Memphis. I had plans that failed, so…read morein desperation I had to reach out for help. That is when the name Jesse Thrower was change my life for the better. I had no where to turn and no prospects. I was directed to 600 Poplar to begin finding services. This man was patient, he had kind words of encouragement, he made me laugh and all in all was able to make me believe it was going to turn out alright in the end. So fast forward a couple years, I am a success story. I have even been able to return the favors he bestowed to me by donating back. He is a wonderful, proper, caring individual. His guidance and insight is needed desperately when the chips are down. He never sugar-coats anything. But that man, Mr. Jesse is a God-send. Without him, so many more would be less than they are now. He keeps tabs on his "kids". He cares. It is a beautiful thing when he cares like a father. He cares when no one else does. I have been to the other mission. There was no help. All the help I received was from 600 Poplar. Mr. Jesse is in charge for a reason. He is the best to help you out to see long term how to fix the problems you are in. You do have to work but he will help you if you put in the effort. God bless him always and keep him safe! We need leaders like him!

He clothes the poor and checks on his people whom others have forgotten or care to look the other way at. He tries to treat the ones he is helping with dignity and a caring to help them become stable and independent. The goal is to be a place to rebuild but to fully heal on your own ad to be reintroduced back into the world. He is wonderful and tries hard to be respectful. A gentle giant. If you work with him, he will try to help you to become what you need to become. It is up to you what you become of but he has blessings of clothing donations and whatever the public can bring. He sees the need and tries to balance the donations to needs. the goal is to become self-sufficient so you must go in thinking about your own personal goals and how to obtain them. He helps but you need to start your life quickly. Poverty knows no color, it knows no race and it burdens even the best of us. When you can finally look past yourself and find the happiness of helping your fellow man again, then you are truly saved again and healing. It is hard but look around and see the bigger need of working together and then all this will end and you will be successful again.

I went to donate blood today. I made an appointment but was about 5 minutes late. There was one guy…read morefinishing up and 3 people working the drive. By the time one of them actually came over to me (7 minutes after my appointment) I was told that the person who needed to check me in had left because I was more than 5 minutes late. They still got me checked in but sadly my iron levels were too low to donate. While they were finishing with me another woman showed up to donate, explained about a tree being in the road which caused her to be late, but they refused to take her. Considering all the stuff I hear about there being a blood shortage I am appalled by this behavior. One of the ladies working was on a the donor bed/lounge chair things, half asleep, and didn't get up at all. I expect better from Red Cross... but I guess I'll try to donate next at St. Jude or one of the other orgs.

The folks at ADS took great care of my mom everyday I was at work for about 15 years. They made it…read morepossible for me to keep mom at home rather than having to place her in a residential facility. The folks at ADS were kind, compassionate and respectful to my mother. They helped her to maintain social interactions and a level of activity that was appropriate to her evolving capability as she progressed along the Alzheimer's road. As I think back over the time my mom was at ADS, I cannot think of a time I had ANY concerns about mother's safety or well-being while she was in their care. The executive director runs a very tight ship and, this being a non-profit, she does it on a very tight budget. ADS is a remarkable find and I would heartily recommend that anyone seeking day care for their loved one give ADS careful consideration. One piece of advice to anyone seeking a day care or residential care provider, especially for a person with dementia: The most important thing is how the staff treat the participants. Look for a place where the staff show genuine concern and respect for the participants. All other considerations are a far distant second.

The Terrace, the assisted living section, has gone downhill within the last couple of years. The…read morefood is horrific, I am not sure my dog would eat it. It had no flavor, seasoning or visual appeal. Elementary school cafeteria food is more appealing and better tasting. For one of the most expensive assisted living communities in Memphis one would think they could afford a decent chef or at least get a school cafeteria line cook to get a more quality end product. They advertise and highly tout while visiting their property that they provide support to residents in this section. This is not the case. They do not ensure residents get to their doctors appointments when the Terrace requires residents must use Terrace transportation. Every department; transportation, nursing and aids all blame the other departments for this failure. It is of upmost importance that these residents make their doctors appointments since most are in the Terrace for medical reasons. Senior management is responsible for this facility and should take responsibility, which they don't. They also "put the blame" on the employees. This is a sure sign of a very weak management team. People DIE when they don't make doctors appointments! It is such an easy fix but obviously no one at this facility cares about the residents for which they are responsible but they sure "sell" their concern for each resident when you are touring the facility. BEWARE when searching for a retirement facility for your loved ones!! Trezevant talks a wonderful game but strikes out on delivery of care and product.

Friends For All has been a deeply painful and frustrating experience over the past three years…read more During this time, I repeatedly submitted grievances regarding staff behavior, including what I experienced as discriminatory language and treatment, including homophobic slurs. These concerns were consistently ignored or not meaningfully addressed, which left me feeling dismissed and unsupported. Instead of resolution, I experienced ongoing conflict, inconsistent communication, and what felt like being treated as a problem rather than a person in need of support. This contributed heavily to my isolation and worsening mental health during an already difficult period of homelessness and instability. Two staff members in particular, Patrice (Rec Room Manager) and her supervisor T'shaka Chambers, were central figures in my experience. I felt that their handling of situations often escalated distress rather than resolving concerns, and I experienced their approach as significantly harmful to my well being. There also appeared to be a pattern where concern or support was expressed until issues were questioned or reported, after which communication became strictly procedural or dismissive. This inconsistency made it difficult to trust the support system that was supposed to be in place. As someone who is part of the LGBTQ+ community, I also experienced this loss of support as the loss of what was once a safe space. Over time, that sense of safety and belonging disappeared, leaving me feeling isolated during an already vulnerable period of my life. I am sharing this because I believe accountability, consistency, and respectful treatment are essential especially in spaces meant to serve vulnerable communities.
