I've been coming to see Mr. Gomora since I was 17 years old, and I'm about to turn 27. He is honest, genuinely kind, knowledgeable, and skilled. He works as a team with his wife Laura, who is also unbelievably sweet. I only come here to get my car serviced, even when I lived in northern CA. He's taken care of my 2013 Mazda so well! It still runs like a dream. Mr. Gomora does thorough, precise work and will always diagnose all problems for your information but will let you know honestly if he thinks it's necessary to address now or later. He has never tried to upsell me or push unnecessary services on me, and often encourages me to shop around for things like tires (though I would rather give him the business 100% of the time). So, we had quite a Monday: storms knocked out power in Studio City, causing sump pump to overflow, backup generator wouldn't kick on, 4 inches of water in new home. Just an absolute disaster. Called Generac, the (terrible) generator manufacturer. They suggested we jumpstart generator with a car battery. Ran to local Shell who refused to sell a battery and suggested I call AAA... who would call them... who would dispatch a truck in 2 hours. I was standing in the garage and they were standing by the batteries (while my furniture floated away) and the whole situation was pretty insane. So I walked outside and Yelped "24 hour auto repair" in hopes somebody, somewhere would loan/sell me a battery at 10pm. First call was to Jose, who answered and immediately and said: "I'll just come jump it; let me get out of bed." GET. OUT. OF. BED. The lady inside the Shell station was sticking her body between me and the solution to my problem. Jose was pulling on clothes and heading my way. 20 minutes later he pulled up in (with his lovely wife in front seat, as they appear to genuinely be in this together). He vaulted out into rain, surveyed the problem, rightly noted we were doing dangerous electrical work outside during a downpour... and jumped the generator carefully, safely, and immediately. Jose insisted I keep the battery pack and cables through the night in case there was another problem. Just asked I bring them back "sometime." And then he refused payment. Said "it just took a moment." I had his gear; he'd gotten out of bed: he'd driven (with his wife!) to my home in the worst storm we've seen in 20 years here. And he wouldn't take payment. My wife returned Jose's equipment the next day and insisted he take a few hundred bucks. Laura tried to refuse, my wife kinda' forced it on them, hugs were exchanged, and all was well. Later that eve, surrounded by dehumidifiers and fans and wet hardwood floors, we realize we still had some of Jose's gear. Our bad. We returned it to him the following day, only to find... HE WAS TRYING TO GIVE US OUR MONEY BACK AGAIN. They'd put the cash in a drawer and pulled it out and handed it back. It was so sweet, so charming, so crazy -- they more than earned it but refused to take saying "you needed help and we were happy to help you." Eventually a compromise was brokered. Laura's sister apparently runs a charity in Mexico City -- she's sending the money there where... maybe it will help somebody else. These are the kindest and most capable people with huge hearts and boundless energy. They've earned a customer for life. Maybe next time, I can pay them. I can't say enough good things. read more

Gomora Auto Service is, simply, the absolutely best! I was up from Newport Beach, visiting a friend in the valley when my car started overheating. I barely made it to my friend's house and couldn't even think about returning home. We looked for highly-rated mechanics on Yelp. The first two I called wouldn't even look at my until a week later. Gomora was my third call, and they said, we'll be able to work on it tomorrow. My car and I limped in at 4:45 pm. I got a call a little later telling me what caused the problem (a broken radiator reservoir that needed to be replaced) and a very reasonable estimate. The next day, another call telling me my car was ready! The repair wasn't expensive at all, and I drove my car home to Newport Beach with no overheating issues at all. They were very friendly and exceeded my expectations in every respect. Because I live in Orange County, I can't say that they'll be my regular mechanics (though I wish I could). Well, perhaps I'm biased because I can push my car the 28 feet to Gomora's when my car decides its time to drain my bank account. Yup, literally 28 feet, I tell people I live in the Ghetto part of Sherman Oaks, and no one believes me! Reviews are accurate, the dude does great work, it does have a family feel because the family mostly runs the place, and they are truly nice people. I think they are a bit on the pricey side, but the one time I had an issue with a part that was replaced, he covered it completely under the warranty and has always been upfront with me on repairs and costs. Plus I really dig all the knick-knacks and books in his office/waiting room. read more

Personal experience #1: 3 PM. I was headed south on Van Nuys Blvd. My foot eased into the brake pedal. Something was wrong. My car was not slowing down. Panicked. I let the car slow to a stop. Still panicking. I eased over to the left lane and turned the emergency lights on. Burbank Blvd was right there. I was less than half a mile from Gomorra. Made a left on Burbank. Crept down the street, made a right on Fulton, and left into the mechanics' alley. Gomora replaced my master brake cylinder within a few of days. I love him. Personal experience #2: Fast forward about a year. Car accident. My face was banged up. I brought the car to Gomora anyway. He made sure I was okay, and asked his wife to drive me home. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ A couple of friends recommended me to go to Gomora with my VW. And I would advise you to check him out. He's a really good guy. He only looks at your car if you have a European car due to an agreement within the mechanics' alley. This was years ago, so this may have changed. read more

I slammed the right rear wheel of my M3 into a curb - nearly cried when I felt that impact! Be sure to be in a large open lot before attempting a 'drift-u-turn'. The impact had bent the lower control arm on the right rear suspension. I didn't know that's all that was wrong, and was expecting to pay at least $1000 or even much more. Since my warranty expired earlier this year, I went to Jose Gomora. He's in the area and got a couple good reviews here. My girlfriend had taken her Mitsubishi to him for a 60k service and we were both very satisfied with his work and honesty. Later that day, Jose told me the only thing wrong was that lower control arm on the right rear suspension, and he had already replaced it! The cost was like $260 including labor... and that the car would need a full alignment, another $200... that's it. I was ecstatic. I was so grateful it would end up costing me less than $500 total. Oh wait, not including resetting the pop-up roll bars in the rear seat head rests... dealer only work, and they hit me for $130 for that, and it took a few minutes. Bring your car to Jose and worry not, he'll take care of you like he wants you to come back... wish all mechanics were like that! read more

My VW passat was about to explode so i checked yelp for a shop within limping distance from my house. Like the other reviews said the estimate wound up being $40 over the final price. They were super quick and friendly and when i went to pick my car up it was squeaky clean and polished (i brought it in with about 20 pounds of dirt covering it). If you have a VW (or anything else really) thats out of warranty there's no excuse for not bringing it here. read more

I've been taking cars to Gomora Auto Service for more than 10 years. He's worked on Hondas, Saabs, Mitsubishis and now, my BMW and my wife's Infiniti. Jose has more integrity than I've ever found in another mechanic and, like other reviewers have said, he'll tell you straight up what needs to be done, whether it's "must do it now" or "it can wait xxx days/weeks" and he'll give you a very accurate estimate. Finding a reliable, honest mechanic is one of those things that you just don't let go of. I don't live particularly close to Gomora Auto Service anymore, but I still take my cars there. My experience at Gomora Auto Service was so good that it made me want to sign up for yelp and write a review. In terms of auto body shops and mechanics, which generally have shady reputations, Jose Gomora is a real honest and stand up guy. I was referred to his place by a friend of mine when my recently purchased used 2005 Audi A4 decided that the front right window should stop working and start making crunching noises. I was freaking out because I had just bought the car! After calling a few places I was quoted between $400 and $500 for the repair but Gomora eased the pain with a quote of $300! I decided to drive all the way from Hollywood to his shop in the Valley because of the savings, and by the time I got there with traffic it was pretty close to closing time, but Jose told me one of his guys was willing to stay later to work on my car! This also happened to be the day before Thanksgiving which made his sacrifice all the more meaningful. When I tried to thank him for his amazing service all he would do is thank ME for the opportunity to serve me!
