This place is the spot for your art supply needs! At first I got lost trying to find this place, but when I did I felt a rush of excitement! This place is located on North 14th st. It's by the Zoo Bar and Sebastian's Table. There's a small sign outside that says Gomez Art Supply. It's a great place and of walking distance from UNL! I would live there if I could. Gomez is a great art supply store! If they don't have something in particular, they will order it for you. They also carry all the supplies for art classes at the university from painting and drawing to book arts and print-making. Many times, supplies for classes will be pre-bundled (marked with the instructor's name) to save you the time of finding everything. Also open on Sunday from 2-5pm which has been a life-saver, for me, on a few occasions. The staff is wonderful for answering any questions about what you need/what works best for anything. I love this store so much.. The girl working there was really helpful and helped me find things I needed. I don't do much art other than just pen and ink drawings but from what I saw from the rest of the store, it seems like they have a very good selection of items used in various art techniques. Went to one star because now I'm not allowed there because I left the first review. Instead of doing something about the bad customer service, she is banning people to shop at her business. Yet again, only shopped there because Michaels didn't have in stock what I needed. She just made it easier not to shop there. This place gets butt hurt if you leave a bad review and then not only bans you from shopping at their store, but then puts your picture up on their walls to insult you further. Amazing locally owned store. It is so wonderful to be able to purchase your supplies from another artist- owner and employees are knowledgeable and helpful. They recommend new materials, they will help you troubleshoot difficult technical problems and can generally help anyone from the novice to professionals. Robust and diverse selection. I am well aware that the store owner absolutely hates negative reviews. But I think she needs to understand that this is the real world. Not everything is going to be perfect, and as the owner of an art store, you must be open to critique. Here's the thing. When you're in an art class and all the teacher expects you to buy is from one specific store, it gets a bit irritating and kind of suspicious. For one thing, you can find most of these things at other stores for much less money, and student-grade paints shouldn't be costing us $10-$20 per tiny tube. (When they expect you to get at least 8-10 tubes) We're already struggling enough as it is with tuition. Paint that expensive should be reserved for professionals, not mere beginning students. Some of us are required to take the class to graduate, so that's all the more insulting. I understand the positive impact of supporting a local business, and I would be more than happy to support my local businesses, but this place is an exception to me. They're feeding off of student's money by making them think they can't find their art supplies elsewhere. There is some deal they have with the University so that teachers promote them and often discourage shopping elsewhere. One teacher got upset for me bringing in my own paints I already had before the semester because I didn't get it at Gomez! Quite frankly, I think that's wrong. But the MAIN reason I am giving this place a negative review is because the service is questionable. The last time I was in there, I felt like I was constantly being followed and watched. The woman working there at the time was somewhat lurking around nearby wherever I went, and it was uncomfortable to say the least. It was so obvious, too, that she was watching me. I get that an employee might worry that someone might steal, but come on. I ended up feeling pressured to buy something small so she wouldn't suspect me further and I could get out of there. I also hear from some other students that some of the employees are not that friendly, and they are only friendly if they know you're coming in to spend a bunch of money. Another reviewer below also mentioned that they ban people that give them bad reviews. Well, that's a shame, because that's bad business etiquette. You must look at reviews to learn from them and improve your business. That is how you get customers. Banning people will only spread negativity and make you lose business. Seriously, if you must go here, do your research first on price comparisons, and hope you get a friendly employee the day you go in. Maybe if things improve I'll go back for my art supply needs, but for now, I have my sources. read more
