This review is just for the restaurant in the club house…read more A solid 4-stars for the food. 2.5 stars for the service. I had the tenderloin salad and I was quite impressed. The salad was loaded with nuts and cheese and the tenderloin was cooked perfectly. The salad had so much "stuff" in it that you could hardly even tell that there were any greens under it all. I also loved the dressing. The service was meh. There wasn't anything they did wrong, but for a higher end golf course I would have expected things to be a little more polished. I felt like I was at a Swiss Chalet for the level of service I received.

Terrible front 9....thanks to me…read more Yes, I am not a professional golfer. BUT I have played this course twice. There are 3 nines to play and I have played them all. Once in the summer and once in October. The place is maintained well, no real rushy rushy marshalls and a beautiful easy spot to get to for those from Calgary or Bragg Creek. Greens are in good condition, interesting tee shots on a few holes. Fees are standard.

Scenery 4.5: beautiful course with elevation changes that allow you to see the layout…read more Shot values 5: target golf always demands you put your thinking cap on. You have to think yourself around this course. Use the yardage guide they have to define your strategy on each hole. Layout 5: there are three 9's each with their own character. Desert 9 is flat with some water features. Coming from the California desert this is more like a "prairie" nine. The heritage 9 starts with a downhill par 5 that forces you to lay up at 230 yards or less. Target golf. Take care not to drive it too long as several fairways end in a river or barranca. Use the yardage guide. Even with a range finder I needed the guide to plan a strategy on each hole. When I failed to use the guide I payed the price by running out of fairway a few times or hitting into bad places. Greens 5: stimping around 11 and rolling true. Bent grass greens that were perfect. Spoke with a greens-keeper and since it had rained the greens werent as hard as they could get. Ouch! Lucky for me they were just soft enough. I am not a great putter and I made 6 birdies in my round! If I read it right the ball went in the hole. Staff 5: friendly and helpful. That's all I ask of staff. Friendly and helpful. Eliminate rudeness and be warm. That was my experience. Pace of play 5: 4 1/2 hours. A slower group let us play through but even they were on a 4.5 hour round pace. Marshals were helpful in keeping people moving politely. Experience 5: it was a fun course. Will play it every time I visit Calgary.

The place is light an astro-turf amusement park, the place was full today, and why shouldn't it be, the weather is getting warmer and pretty soon people will be out on the green, so why not practise until those whitey whites melt away. For those of you wanting to get into the sport, NGA provides classes; just check the new spring schedule, but courses from $80 a lesson to $700 for 10. It was just a refreshing change to be in a pseudo like immobile heidenberg. I don't have the patience or the skill to even attempt this; my golfing skills are challenged enough on a mini golf range let alone this colossal monster. Check NGA out to improve the Tiger in you.

Review #28 of Yelp's 30 Day Challenge 2012…read more National Gold Academy is definitely a good place to start learning golf. A few months ago, I enrolled in their Adult weeknight beginner program which is a 5-part class that's an hour each designed for adults who have no experience playing golf or for those who want to improve their basic skills. I wasn't excited about my first class as I am totally uncoordinated and know that I'll probably just humiliate myself but that all changed after my first class. Everyone at the reception area was so friendly and chill that I immediately felt at ease in an unfamiliar environment. Our teacher was Brad and he's amazing. I love how he's good at explaining and pointing out what small changes you can make to improve your swing and his recommendations always make my swing better. When the dome wasn't busy, he also extended our classes just so he could really focus on each student and address our concerns. He also helped us out in picking our clubs and pointed out why certain clubs will work or won't work for us. For a beginner, I appreciated that they have a good variety of clubs that I can borrow for free so I didn't have to spend any extra cash on clubs I'm not so sure are any good. They have your regular driving range, a putting area, several different types of simulators that can be used for group activities and video recording devices that can help in analyzing how you can further improve your swing.

I'm not new to the sport of golf but golfing at Lakeview Golf Course was my first golf course…read moreexperience in Calgary. Prior to this visit I hadn't played on a golf course for around 3 years, so I was a bit apprehensive about my first return game. I'm a capable golfer; usually I can get a bogey here and there, maybe even a par, but then there are holes where everything goes wrong and I max out my strokes to 10+... Not a big deal with the right group, but it can pretty nerve racking when you're surrounded by other people on the course who are seemingly judging you and getting annoyed by your lack of skill. With that in mind I was a bit nervous for my return game. Upon checking in at the counter for our Tee time the lady working the cashier ensured us that it was a very beginner friendly course and if people don't like that, then they shouldn't be golfing here. Music to my ears :). We were paired with a senior couple and we set off. Sure enough it was a very beginner friendly course! The first 3 holes are their longer par 4 holes, and the remaining 6 are par 3s. There are no sand traps or water traps (unless you really hammer it out of bounds on a couple holes, you may end up in the reservoir lol) and minimal sloping. The trees also did a good job stopping the ball from going too far out of bounds most of the time, although on one hole I proved it possible to make it onto the fairway of an adjacent hole lol :D. I've golfed 7 or 8 different courses (mostly around Lethbridge where I grew up) and this was by far the easiest and most basic I've played. The greens are pretty flat and are a bit slow, but overall they looked well maintained as was the rest of the course. This course was definitely better maintained than at least one of the other courses I've played. As another reviewer mentioned, they do have power lines that are pretty prevalent on a couple holes with an audible humming. You do get some solid views on the reservoir on a couple holes and near the club house though! The couple we were paired with were definitely of beginner level as well, so it made for a highly enjoyable experience as we all played on a level playing field free on judgement and full on fun :). The course is very walkable, we opted for no cart and still did it in under 2 hours. You could do it in under 1.5 hours with the right group. I recommend booking ahead of time rather than trying to walk-in, they were quite busy! There's also a phone and online booking system. Their green fees were extremely affordable: $23 on weekend, $21 on weekdays, you can also rent clubs for $7 if you don't have your own! There is a putting green near the club house, no chipping green or driving range. Also cash and credit only, no credit! Overall great course all around for beginners, I'll definitely golf here again! Don't expect to use your driver much, you can probably get away with playing this entire course with a 3 wood, pitching wedge and a putter quite reasonably. Especially on the latter half I was able to primarily use my pitching wedge and putter. So if you're not a fan of the short game and like some additional course challenges this course may not be for you, but if you like a casual paced game that's free of judgement then it's a solid course!

Other than that, it's a great course. Being a newer golfer I enjoy this course, 4 of us can do it in under 2 hours. For the hubs and I to golf with a power cart is around $50. If you are a newer golfer, looking for a fun course or just a quick round, I would definitely recommend it to anyone!

There are two downhill par three holes with dramatic elevation changes overlooking a gorgeous river with the Rockies in the distance. Since the sand oil business seems to be set up at the base of this course it has marred the view but this is easily overlooked and ignored. 0.5 deduction. Routing and shot values 4.5: I walked the front nine. This is very doable. The shot values and aim lines are very good to generous fairways on the front nine. This is where you want to score. The par 5 2nd is reachable and the elevation changes aren't overly taxing for walkers. The back nine is NOT walkable. The pro-staff was helpful and made sure we took a cart for the back nine. Long walks between holes and Steep terrain make the back nine cart necessary. Golf carts are gas powered as necessary on hilly courses. The back nine plays down into a valley for several holes and you lose the majesty of the Rockies during that time. The houses that border the course come into play more than I like. The back is much more demanding and narrow so be prepared and avoid the big number. 0.5 deduction for the houses. Staff 4.5: friendly in the pro shop and cafe. Cart guys look exhausted and were just helpful enough; Very perfunctory. 0.5 deduction. Also the pull carts they have are the giant wheel type that too over with regularity on hilly terrain. They would be best served by having 4 wheeled push carts by Clicgear of Sun Mountain. Greens 4.0: they were in good shape but starting to get overrun by poana grass. Hence several putts were knocked offline by flowering poana; a weed that is a curse to all golf courses. I'm a 6 handicap and had played banff springs and heritage pointe on this trip. Perfect greens in both instances with heritage taking the prize. Pace of play 5: played in 4:25. No rangers on this go around but no issues either. The foursomes in front of us kept pulling away, playing fast. Much appreciated!! Overall, this course deserves 5 stars because it was a joy to play. My advice is to walk the front and ride the back nine. Enjoy the scenery and play for the spectacular shot!
