I was really looking forward to joining this gym. I finally got over my covid fears, and I'll be getting the next booster this month. I went gym shopping a few days ago, but I actually was planning to join this one, since it's in the location of my former gym, where I enjoyed years of great workouts and had around 12 gym buddies to hang out with. Have been working out at home since March 2020.
I'm not sure what they're going for here, and I suspect that the few reviews I've seen so far have been shills, but I'm going to lay it on the line and just realize that, unfortunately, this does not appeal to me.
When I first walked in, I noticed it was kind of dim near the check-in desk, and I couldn't see anything beyond that, so much so that I actually thought they weren't open yet and were still under construction. I was given a tour by an admittedly very nice and eager manager (?). I don't think I caught his name. So I immediately noticed how dark it was on the floor of the gym. I asked him if they were still installing the lights. He told me that the lighting is intentional. I actually didn't believe him at first. It was so dark, I couldn't really distinguish which machine was which. I have no idea if anyone I knew from previous years was in there because it was so dark. In addition, they have added fake red brick walls (they looked brown in the lighting) to most of the walls, including some in the locker room. Supposedly, the lighting is to "allow focus on the workout" and "to show off the curves and muscles." Either that, or it's for shy people who are scared to see what they really look like. The entire aesthetic reminded me of the fern bars of San Francisco in the 70s/80s, which I guess this place is trying to evoke, or an upscale whiskey/wine bar from 2021 in downtown, like that place on Travis. That's fine if I want a night out, but it seems counter-productive to a workout as in "it's kind of boring and I would fall asleep on the bench." It's a real shame, because the equipment from what I could see looked good, but honestly it's nothing you couldn't also find at Fitness Connection, the Y, Lifetime Gym, etc., and in those places, you can see how you're doing. Ultimately, this seems like a trend that won't last, and it's a shame they spent however much money to achieve it. read more
