I've been going here 4 plus years. I was here. When it was golds. I was here when it was eau Claire fitness. Now I'm here as it's the ymca. And my conclusion is that each and every year this place gets trashier and trashier. The constant change of ownership has definitely played a role in its decline. If you want to go to a clean commercial gym stay away. Now you can expect children playing on the equipment. High schoolers hogging bench racks. No one cleans their machines anymore. Half the time they don't even put wipes out or restock or clean the bathrooms. There was crap all over the floors today. Also they don't keep the remotes for the TVs out anymore. I don't want to watch politics. no NFL all year!? Crazy. I could be just being over dramatic. But being a loyal customer for 4 plus years and then raising our rates while this places gets more raggedy. No thanks. Saunas are nice tho. But now it's overpacked since it's the ymca now. Gold's is, in my opinion, the best gym in the city of Eau Claire. Not only do they offer a variety of equipment, but they offer a ton of classes from Aqua Yoga to Zumba. The instructors are all fantastic! They recently received and updated a lot of their equipment, and always keep the gym in good shape by cleaning. I almost always see one of their employees working on something or cleaning the facility. Once you are done working out, whether it be in the pool, weight section, or cardio cinema, you can stop by the desk on your way out for a smoothie! They are really good, and actually not that high in calories. The only thing that I wish they had at this point is towels, but it's easy enough to bring your own. LOVE Gold's, and cannot see myself ever going to another gym in Eau Claire. read more

Stopped in with a free pass because I am considering joining this gym. Though it is a bit of a travel to work out there, I feel it is a nice gym to work in compared to others. If you lock in a year membership the rate is good compare to other gyms. Though, make sure you bring your own towel. I am not sure because it was a Sunday but only seemed like one person was working and I had to wait for a good 15 min before I could be waited on. Also seems to be the same excuse about not knowing anything from this person and the other person at the desk when I left. Which was I just recently started and so not know the answer. I am confused though why if somebody isn't fully trained why would you not have a second person working there? Was all the help just hired at the same time? Functional for a week visit, but I wouldn't use this as my regular gym. The weight room area is in serious need of ventilation--it smells like sweat and chlorine from the pool, and it's bikram yoga hot in there. A lot of the equipment is pretty old (comparing it to my usual Seattle Gold's location). The men's locker room was disgusting and filthy, as was the "stretch deck". The front desk guy was rude to my sister when she tried to use a trial pass, and was pretty snotty when he pointed out the (extremely) fine print that stated you had to have a valid ID for the Tri-Valley area in order to use it. Even though she was with two other people, he denied her entrance to the gym. I don't know if this is a franchise or what, but I've never heard of not being able to use a trial pass unless you live in the area. I don't live in Eau Claire, but from what I've seen of Gold's here, you can do better. read more

this place is not what it used to be! the place is filthy! the locker rooms/toilets are never cleaned. the womans locker room has buckets on the floor collecting water dripping from the ceiling!? the pool & hot tub is something else. dont go in unless you want an infection! they clearly don't reinvest any money into the gym. they only have afternoon yoga classes two days a week with no classes after 10:00 am on friday & saturdays!? please save yourself! run! read more

This gym is the only one in Eau Claire of its kind. That's why it's hard for other gyms to beat it. However, there is so much that is seriously wrong about this gym. It's overpriced for what you get, the poor personal trainers work for barely anything(that's probably why they can't keep any one for longer than a year) and the management has no idea what they're doing or how to run a business. Passing through town and needed a gym for the night. Had everything I needed. Arrived at 7pm. parking lot looked packed but did not have to wait for any weights or equipment. I cancelled my membership on May 6 and and they still charged me for the entire months of May and June. You can't get a manager to call you back to discuss your membership unless you go there or keep calling over and over. There should be a notice either mail or email when you monthly auto-pay amount due changes (for example after the first year when your membership increases) and pro-rated month for cancellations just like any other service bills you receive like phone, cable, insurance, etc. I did enjoy the Zumba classes and the Ladies Fitness Room. read more

Golds doesn't deserve a rating at all. I have been trying for weeks now to talk to someone about my wife's membership that she only used a couple of times before her trainer was fired or left as golds says. My wife signed up for a personal trainer but when he failed to contact her for weeks she asked what was going on, he then replied, oh I guess they ( golds ) like to keep it real professional and inform clients when their trainers get fired! Nobody from golds ever contacted my wife about this matter or offer her a different trainer or release to her contract but only to send us collection letters for late membership payments. I have called a number of times, even gone in in person to speak to someone about the matter only to be completely ignored about this situation. read more

The equipment is nice and the class selections are great. A three star for issues with child care center and cleanliness in the showers/ bathrooms I think they should clean them on and off through out the day, the shower stalls can look pretty awful at times. The Child care center which does not follow any state standards. (because they are a drop off center.) If you have other means of care, I would suggest children under the age of two find a private sitter. This is not a professional child care center and will not be organized at all. At times, it's a very very busy place and this will not be a 4:1 ratio under the age of two. (State standard) I no longer bring my kids there; I couldn't relax, I became scared that my now- 1 year old would choke on something and no one would even notice her in the high chair they left her in to eat in. Parents be aware. It's not to bad for older children though they will watch movies. It's not uncommon to see the child care center kids end up in the gym when they have an overload of children. This is not professional, there are adults in there hello. Like one man said, "We are here to relax and shoot buckets, not babysit." Hopefully they will stop allowing that to happen and get organized in the day care center. If you are a swimmer, the pool hours will be limited in the morning, due to senior citizen classes, great to see! But check the open pool hours and your schedule. They need another pool or a bigger one. Lane spots are very limited when it is open. They have a separate room dedicated for women to work out in... And nice separate area to do cardio while you watch a movie but this area I feel is for people who are experienced with the cardio equipment, due to a lack of lighting, you will have to know where the button and settings are. However, There is upstairs completely full of various cardio equipment so either way you'd be set. Great high protein drinks etc reasonably priced. read more

Even one star is too good for this gym. This gym may sparkle when you enter, but this place is awful. Terrible staff. They are rude and useless. Not a family friendly gym. Movie room is unsupervised so underage kids get to watch movies with nudity and whatever else you can imagine. Staff stands around and does nothing other than talk to the "regulars." Worst gym in Eau Claire. Go somewhere else. read more

The showers reek of mold and I have seen black mold in the soap dispensers, on ceiling tiles and shower tiles. The ventilation system is not adequate for a shower area. Wish I could cancel my membership but you have to move over 50 miles away. We live 46 miles away. What bullshit! My husband has Asthma and I won't risk his health or mine. You go to a gym to get healthy not get sick from black mold! read more

Gold's Gym is good Gym in Eau Claire. My trainer's name is Zach and he is a Pro at what he does. He helped me strengthen my shoulders and my tennis has improved a lot since then. The personal training classes are affordable especially when you buy them in bulk and they offer very good discounts. The juice bar is very good & tempting but I try my best not to stop there. Overall it is a good experience. read more

Advising NEVER sign a contract with this gym ever! There is no sympathy or concern for their members, spoke to the manager Kyle earlier in the week. We'd canceled our membership n they require a month notice, i gave them two weeks, okay fine i get it. They increased the monthly fee for the last month. Low n behold my card was frauded when they ran the last payment. So they charged a return fee twice , for running it twice, for something that was beyond my control. Explained the situation to Kyle, the manager, and his statement was, that's why you sign a contract. Stopped in two days later with account payoff, again explained situation to girl at desk, she was understanding n said Kyle would call me.....yup no phone call. This is a money hungry fee you up the ass gym. Very disappointed because they truly don't care about their members!! Think twice about committing to this gym in the new year. Excellent free weight section and awesome cardio cinema room. Much of the cardio equipment seems a little out dated. A big bonus for me would be to install drinking fountains with the bottle feature on them since that is what most people carry around with them. Would like to see a better/different stretching area due to the fact that the only stretching area they have is about 10x15 and is usually full of people. A minor note also is there music is just terrible, truthfully awful; it ranges from 60s country to something worse or older. Not the type of music that gets your blood moving. The overall cleanliness of the gym seems lax. There is often a mildewy/unknown substance in the men's shower room and they just do not seem to have very good cleaning habits. The main draw to this gym out of others in the area (opposed to the Y) is their pool, hot tub and sauna. These are excellent features to whined down in after a workout. read more

The gym itself is great when the machines are actually working or getting serviced on time or when there is no one else there so you can use the free weights (very limited on weights--one or two set for each weight up to a high weight and very little selection of lower weights). The pool is nice but SMALL and if there is anything else going on in the area good luck getting into the ONE lane they occasionally make available. The locker rooms are in a constant state of disrepair. For example, one stall in the ladies locker room has had a sign on it that "someone has been called to come fix the problem" for over two months now. And there is ONE working soap dispenser. NOT hygienic guys! There is so much mold growing in the shower area that it doesn't even pay to shower off after a workout unless you want to have your allergies act up. The "towels" they so kindly provide to clean off the machines after use are less than useless--almost completely dry. So, yeah, be prepared to get norovirus if you touch anything. The geniuses running this unfortunate franchise are concerned only with getting new members, not retaining the members they already have, as is evidenced in their complete lack of interest when a member points out something that needs attention whether it be an overflowing toilet or a Stairmaster that has been broken down for SIX MONTHS. One owner has even gone out of his way to make a rude comment to my best friend when she asked why oftentimes the person who is supposed to open the gym in the morning isn't there on time. Terrible. Will absolutely not be renewing my contract and I encourage you to not listen to whatever song and dance they give on the tour or during a consultation--the worst gym in EC hands-down. read more
