The best analogy I can come up with is that it is the "fast food" of fitness; there when you need it, delivering a consistent product regardless of location and you, for the most part, know what you are getting in to. That being said, it is also akin to the fast food franchises in that it has some misleading things about it. The "PE at PF" program is a bit like the "healthy choice" options at various chains, for the people who need that it will do what you need it to do however, don't expect miracles. The Bangor Planet Fitness meets all the criteria of a large fitness facility and exceeds in many ways. It is large and very spacious. I never felt crowded or fighting for a machine whether it be cardio or weight training. They have many ellipticals (both Arc Trainers and standard EFX machines), Tread mills, and fitness bikes (recumbent and standard). One of the nicest things about the Bangor PF is the locker room; it is clean, roomy, and well maintained. The showers (all 3 of them?!?) are clean and each has its own private changing room should you want it. In short, it is one of the nicer and well kept PF's I have visited. As promised, the Lunk factor is exceptionally low with no weight dropping, grunting, or yelling in any of my multiple visits.

My wife and I have been working with Miles, one of their trainers, twice a week for the past year and have thoroughly enjoyed our experience and noticed quick and sustained results. As the gym is boutique, they are able to create personalized training regimens and nutrition guides for people of all shapes/sizes and levels of experience. Miles varies up the circuits to create fun, albeit tough exercises to push us to new goals. During the week, there are evening men's and women's evening classes, which have become quite popular. In the summer, the gym comes together as a group to create a killer Muddy Mainer team and participates in other rec sports. Overall, I would highly recommend Hybrid for anyone wanting expert but approachable gym instruction.
