The Oxen Yoke Inn - Fried pickles and onion rings

Easily one of the coolest bars in Central Montana. Huge burgers (although I hear they used to be as…read morebig as a plate!), we split the "garbage burger" - perfectly cooked bacon and onions - and some fried pickles and onion rings. Waitress was very friendly and attentive. And the place is decorated with brands, cowboy hats and all sorts of local artifacts. Will definitely be back.

Locals are always best way to find the places others may not be familiar with. I am fortunate…read moreenough to be traveling with friends from the area who pointed out this place, know for giant burgers from local beef. It wasn't on Yelp and the owner said they didn't have a street address, just a post office box so I'm hoping Yelp can still give them notice. Located at the intersection of 541 and 239 in Utica, but with a Hobson address. The owner also took our order and cooked our meals. There is a nice big bar and tables to eat or socialize. At the time of our visit the most expensive burger was $15 and it's what I ordered. The Big Sky Burger. All their patties are fresh, never frozen, and 3/4 lb in weight. Not a typo. 3/4lb! Nice brioche bun. Cooked to order and done just right. Great flavor. Our party had 8 people and everyone ordered something different which gave us a good sample of the menu. Not a single complaint. Food was fabulous. The owner was friendly. There are t-shirts, of course, and some great history on the walls. Definitely worth stopping by!!

The Well Bar - New York steak dinner. It comes with its own hot slaw or side salad. Delicious!

Elmos Highwood bar is a neat place. It has quite a bit of history and has pictures and some history…read moreon its walls. I have attached the menu and a picture of our meal. That's being said we went on a Wednesday which rotates their steak dinner. Ribeye / New York / Prime Rib. Delicious. The service was great as they went above and beyond. When making the reservation and yes on a Friday you need reservations as they need to know how much steak is required to serve its customers. I took my wife on our anniversary and simply asked if they could make it special. She did and it was beautiful. Thank you for the special time. I recommend this to get out of town and small town hospitality.

We were traveling through Highwood returning south from a baseball tournament in Havre. We wanted…read moreto meet up with a friend who just moved to the area. He suggested Elmo's Highwood Bar. We walked in and no one was there, but Sherry and a gentleman at the bar. They were friendly and place was clean and comfortable. She gave us internet password so we could reach our friend as cell service is poor in the area. In meantime, another baseball family saw our car and stopped. Sherry accommodated all of us as we came and went and was so pleasant and helpful. The food was great! Kids with grilled cheese, mini pizza and multiple Shirley temple requests. Adults had burgers, BLT, adult grilled cheese (with bacon). Side green salad and macaroni salads were great (macaroni salad was indeed especially good with secret sauce and not too heavy). By the time we left, the bar filled in and the conversation between locals and those of us passing through was like one big open room of friendly people learning about each other. We all took a gamble at the Shake a Day and were feeling content with meal and entire experience. The Highwood community clearly is made up of special, hard working, friendly people. Elmos is the kind of place I will plan in to our travels now. We look forward to steak night some time!

If you're from out-of-town you'll probably drive by The Grand and pass by it without knowing it's…read morethere. The building looks like it hasn't been changed in 50 years. And, no one seems to care. This is a local's spot that I'm guessing doesn't see too much traffic from those who don't live here. It's also, one of two places to eat in Chester (other than Spud's) and the only one open late. When you walk inside, and if you aren't with a bunch of locals, people will turn and look at you (everyone is friendly). It's almost like a movie. You'll find a few good ole boys at the bar drinking and often the same few daily. A few people will be playing the slot machines. And, others will be chatting and ordering drinks/food. There's a bar and restaurant side, and normally one bartender and another server, or one that does both. It's like a rundown dive bar and locals love it, possibly because there's no where else to go. Either way, if you are hungry you might not have any other choices. Keep in mind, even the grocery store closes at 8pm. After that, it's here, starve or go eat some of the wheat on the farms that surround the region. The food is average and if you like greasy food, you'll love this place. They do provide value, large portions and plenty of flavor. What's their specialty? Locals will tell you the broasted chicken. Many of my friends call the restaurant "The Coop" just because of it. And, where else can you find four pieces of broasted chicken for less than $10 (and sides)? Normally, I'll order a burger. The Brown Burger is a monstrous two patties that also carries ham, bacon and cheese. My big buddies order it, but I stick with the patty melt, and often ask for pastrami on it. The burgers taste hand-made (we know they are) and won't do you wrong. They have hand-cut fries and sweet potato tots, too. On a positive note, unlike the rest of the region, they don't use iceberg lettuce, rather fresh greens. The salad is far better than you'd expect. Keep in mind, this is the only place in town where you can watch a game, have a beer, grab a bite and play a slot machine - without shuffling your feet. You'll find yourself in the midst of farmers, ranchers, teachers and a few other locals and full after a meal here.
