But unlike those who…read morebrought home designer minis and shed free pocket pals, I rescued a 15 week old fluffer who came sight unseen all the way from South Texas. My Trooper is a dog of substance, part Husky, German Shepard, Chow, Rottweiler with a snippet of Cocker Spaniel thrown in (Yes, I did the doggie DNA test.) He arrived at 15 lbs and it seemed overnight, he began to expand, in size and attitude. His adorable cuddling and puppy mouthing was quickly turning into naughtiness and as he went from 15 to 50 lbs, I started to worry, I was going to be that house with the annoying dog. Enter Happy Dog Training. Recommended by EVERYONE, I registered for "Family Dog 1" and thought, if nothing else, I'd get to see real humans for the next 8 weeks. Trooper dragged me into our first class eagerly expecting to run and play with the 4 other dogs in class, but he soon learned that school was serious business, but with great rewards: Yummy treats, bully sticks and tug toys, and of course praise and attention. Our Trainers, Ellen and Tiffany made us feel so comfortable, gently reminding me when to click and when to treat since I so often got it wrong and helping me see the small steps we were making were really huge milestones on our journey from "hard to handle" to "wow, what a good dog." Never a harsh word or tone, they taught us to reward the positive and allow our fur kids to figure out how to earn those treats. No punishment, no yelling, no mean mommy voices, just lots of positive reinforcement and understanding their motivation. Trooper is now 10 months old and well over 60lbs. He walks well on his leash, responds to sit, down, off, wait, go and of course give mommy kisses. He had his first grooming at the spa and got a gold star for behavior. Thanks to Happy Dog Training, Mommy's Big Dog is turning out to be the silver lining in this pandemic. Hope to register for more classes soon- Trooper misses school!

Jeris, the owner, did Wyatt's evaluation himself and made a great first impression. He told me every trainer here is excellent, and he was right. He deserves real credit for putting together an amazing team and building a great place. Rachel, the manager, is outstanding. In one session she had Wyatt doing balance work, impulse control with the tug toy, flirt pole drills, and name recognition with distractions. Just as important, she trains me too. She sent us home with practical tips we use every day: a few minutes of focus work before the morning walk, never opening the crate while he's barking, and using short crate breaks as a calm reset. They've made a real difference at home. She even encourages us to work with the other trainers so Wyatt learns to listen to everyone, which tells you she cares more about the dog than about getting credit. Nicole is great too, and she's become a real part of Wyatt's progress. She was amazing with him on the dog treadmill. When he kept trying to jump off, she stayed patient and calm, got him right back on, and built him up step by step, starting at a slow half mile per hour and working up to 2 mph, until he was walking along happily for his first full five minutes. That's going to be a lifesaver on cold and windy days this winter. She packs a lot into every session. She's working with us on sit-stays at every doorway, clear cues for "get it" and "out," and even teaching him to shake. When Wyatt got wound up, we put him in the big crate they have at the facility for a short break, exactly the reset Rachel had recommended, and Nicole showed me how to let him settle down on his own without hovering. It worked like a charm. She also has a clear plan for what's next for a big, friendly Shepherd: building a reliable recall, and keeping him sociable but calm around other dogs and kids instead of fixating on them. I really appreciate how straightforward she is. She gave me honest, practical advice on everything from harness versus prong collar to how to handle his middle-of-the-night barking, and every piece of it made sense. She figured out right away that Wyatt is more motivated by toys than treats, which changed how we train at home. I walk out of every session with a clear plan. I contacted Michael after a recommendation from our vet, who herself had noticed the escalating change in my dog. Michael was a god send! Not only does he really know and love dogs, but he's a great teacher. He was great at helping me understand the way dogs think and taught me what I needed to do in order to better command my dog and give him the boundaries, direction, and leadership he needed to feel more calm and confident. Not only did my dog LOVE our sessions with Michael (he would even wait for him by the door when he knew he had "school"), but he learned very quickly and is now a LOT calmer over all. Situations that were once stressful and even sometimes dangerous for us are now calm and much better controlled, and we can resume normal life activities again. Michael taught me to understand what my dog needs from ME, so that I can get better behavior from and provide a happier and calmer life for HIM. That being said, remember that dog training involves training the owner in order to train the dog, so you also have to put in the work! Just calling Michael and not doing any of the training on your own between sessions will not solve anything! Additionally, Michael is very professional and kind, is quick to respond to questions or problems via text, email, and phone, and is very flexible with his scheduling (we did the private in-home sessions). He takes the time to address all your concerns, and always aims to use safe and positive reinforcement training methods, rather than other trainers I had researched that use methods that include things like shock collars and consequence-based training, which I personally did not prefer to use for my dog if I could avoid it. Calling Michael was the best thing I could have ever done for my dog, and for my family as well. I can't say enough about how great our experience was with Michael! I would highly recommend him!
