We were playing Chinatown roulette last night, but our hungry bellies got the better of us so we just popped into the first place we came across - Golden Delicious, at the top of the Chinatown district. There was no tout out the front, and we were a little skeptical as we thought being the first choice for diners coming this way they might get so much walk-in traffic that they didn't have to try hard to impress.
We were very wrong - this place is up there as a new Chinatown fave.
The menu is extensive and a lot more interesting than some of their neighbours - which explained why the place was packed with mostly Chinese speaking diners. We're not as daring as some, so we did stick to the staples: dumplings, mince and beans, plate of weird looking mushrooms, but also added these pancake beef rolls which we hadn't seen before. The pancake is just like roti bread - very nice, as everything was. Great flavours, nice chilli kick without burning your taste buds away - every dish was great. Every other table seemed to be enjoying this dish that had pork strips hanging on a perch over some pancake and veggies, so we'll have to try that next time as it's obviously a staple and something they do well.
Service during the meal was pretty decent for this area, and as we left every single staff member we passed said a warm goodbye which was a nice note to leave on. Will be back with friends soon for sure. read more
