I've been coming here for 2 decades for 1 reason: fresh baked daily markouk. (IYKYK) Growing up in a Lebanese family and cooking all the best middle eastern foods - trust me when I say the markouk and Fatayer alone is worth the trip to this bakery and adjacent halal market (think bodega). Dingy, somewhat organized, and eclectic you can find everything from grains & meats, bulk sized tahini, junky trinkets to olives, hookah equipment and supplies, dried spices and middle eastern desserts. The bakery serves up all kinds of middle eastern foods - fatayer, knafe, pita, and much more! I recommend the minced meat and pine nut fatayer- so so good. It's a treasure hunt and is in a small area of Sharon Amity with a fair few other middle eastern spots to try like Al-Basha next door. If you're looking for the flavors of home (Lebanon, Syria) this is as close as charlotte can get.

The pastries at Golden Bakery cannot be beat! Every visit, we get a giant box of assorted baklava. Favorites are the pistachio and "mixed nuts." I also love the semolina cake and the cone shaped one wrapped in the shredded corn flake thingies. (Highly technical term, I know.) Every piece tastes like it's soaked in honey, rose water, and the tears of a unicorn. They're seriously magical. There are a few tables to sit and eat or you can take your sweets to go. There's also a small grocery store attached with lots of fun, international finds. I've heard good things about their pizza but haven't had a chance to try one, yet. Maybe in the cards for my next visit!

I wanted to like this place a lot but all in all I was disappointed. This middle eastern haven was well reviewed and was quite genuine located in an inexpensive part of town in a strip center with several Middle East food trucks parked adjacent which actually looked quite interesting. Next door was a kabob place that looked like it had possibilities and s hookah bar which did not, at least to me. This business is supposed to consist of three aspects: a bakery, an ethnic grocery store with a butcher and a restaurant. I think the restaurant is an exaggeration. As best I can tell. It consisted of s couple tables where you could eat what you bought at the bakery. There was a great guy working the counter in the bakery. He was very helpful and willing to answer each of my ceaseless questions. There were not too many goods to look at. The Syrian bread, the impetus for my visit was really pretty good. I would have loved to taste them warm fresh out of their brick oven and I wondered how long they had sat there bagged. But still, all in all, pretty good. I also bought for if their pies which are small and with pretty pastry. There is a minimum of four. The spinach were pretty delicious, the chicken which was pretty good and the beef which was better than just okay. They also sell s variety of baklava which they didn't have, a variety of macaroons which I took a pass on, something they called pizza which didn't look exciting to me, yogurt which the guy who worked there said was made there and similar to but thicker than Greek yogurt but still didn't sound too enthusiastic about, and that was about if. I had been hoping to take Home some of the delicious side dishes that the middle eastern cultures are famous for. Then into the densely crowded and stocked grocery store. It was filled with items I was unfamiliar with and had there been anybody to ask I'm sure I would have purchased snd tried a few items. I had been in particular been looking forward to the butcher shop area. They advertised goat and lamb and I was planning on bringing home some goat chops and some interesting cuts and maybe some advice. I got none of these. There were only a couple things in the counter and some frozen things in a heap on a cooler. There was a guy working there but he ignored me so I took a pass. There was a sign quoting forty bucks to use their saw which was certainly unique to see in s grocery store. I wonder if that was s good price. On The way out, a guy carried in s dead goat. That was also unique and I wonder if it was headed to the saw!? The guy who checked me out (I did buy a bag of coos coos) was not very outgoing do I failed yo learn as much as I wanted on what were the true possibilities of this business. I probably will try it again sometime maybe in a Friday when I hear the bakery is better stocked. So, I'd say I am disappointed based on other reviews which had brought me here but still hopeful.

I stopped by Golden Bakery right after I had an excellent meal at Nile. It was relatively late in the night, around 8:15, and this seemed to effect the sort of service that we received (which is totally reasonable). Still, the staff was kind and answered all of our questions about their large pastry case and offering recommendations. I will say that you cannot buy desserts individually, because you at least have to purchase a fourth of a pound of food. Although this ended up only being two pieces of baklava and a cookie, it still may have been nice to know this in advance. My friend and I tried two types of baklava, both pistachio and walnut as well as a semolina date cookie. The pistachio baklava was the winner of the night- absolutely the best I have ever had! In addition, the date cookie was an interesting combination of sweet and savory with the semolina flour and it felt a little like a fig newton while eating it! Definitely not complaining about that. Overall, enjoyed my experience at this bakery! Only wish I would have known in advance their limits on purchasing, but now that I have my expectations straight I will go in hungry! Definitely give it a try, especially if you're craving baklava or wanting to explore.

this place is a REALLY good choice if you're craving Mediterranean (Arab/Greek) desserts. They're phenomenal. The owners seem super nice and I've never had a bad experience there. Friendly service, great options, delicious desserts!

A friend and I popped in quickly to pick up some pita bread after a quick run through the halal market next door... at least that's what we MEANT to do. There was hot markouk coming out when we arrived so we ordered one just as it came off but the manager was having none of that and after we sat down he passed us a huge sampling of fatayer. The markouk was delicious and the fatayer was absolutely amazing! We tried beef, chicken, spinach and feta and one with what tasted like a slightly pickled spinach or other green. The bad news is we'd just come from having Korean food so we were already stuffed.. the worse news is that didn't stop us from diving in and loving every bite! I'd say if you think it's yummy when you're already well fed then you know it's really that way!

This is a for real Syrian bakery. The kanefeh is almost as good as you can get int the Middle East. Baklava is excellent as well. I understand they have the little middle eastern "pizzas" (can't remember the name). Will need to try those sometime as well.

The employee was dismissive, openly biased, and 100% arrogant. I was ignored and treated with a complete lack of respect, courtesy, and basic human decency. When I asked to speak with a manager, this employee stated they were working UNSUPERVISED with no manager on duty -- just two employees who looked like high schoolers (or acted as such) and clearly lacked training in customer service. I have worked in the food industry myself, and I would have been fired on the spot for treating a customer with such insolence. What made it worse was that this employee showed impertinence to the highest degree in front of children. This wasn't a trivial request for myself -- it was for a child's birthday cake. Yet no consideration or empathy was shown at all. I will not be returning unless this employee receives the training they clearly lack. Some type of disrespect must be happening inside management for them to allow this kind of behavior from such a classless person. If these actions are allowed to continue, this store cannot progress with employees like this. I hope this issue is resolved. If questioned for this review I highly suggest looking at your security footage to see how your employee literally turned their back on me in the middle of a conversation. It was rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced by a fresh side salad. I paired it with a café au lait, which was equally well done. The ambiance is effortlessly chic--very much reminiscent of a European café--and it was lively during lunch. It's the kind of place where you can sit, linger, and people-watch... and SouthPark definitely showed up in style. At one point, several guests seated near us were speaking French, which added to the authenticity and overall experience. Service was warm and efficient, even with the crowd. The bakery itself is on the smaller side--you order inside and then head outside to sit and eat. I went on a Sunday, so it was very busy with a long line, but it moved quickly. When seating fills up, the neighboring restaurant allows use of their patio, which is a thoughtful touch. My friend enjoyed her quiche as well, and we both agreed it's a spot worth returning to--whether for a casual lunch, coffee, or a pastry break. Location & setting: Renaissance is tucked into the upscale specialty shops of SouthPark, in a lovely, polished shopping center surrounded by quality retailers like Williams Sonoma and several restaurants. You'll immediately notice the bright yellow awning--it's cheerful and inviting--and inside, the bakery is just as charming. That search led me to Vicente in South End, and I'm happy to say it absolutely earned its spot on my list. The kouign-amann here was slightly lighter and a bit less dense and buttery than the ones I remember from the Bay Area, but it still hit all the right notes--caramelized edges, flaky layers, and just enough indulgence to satisfy the craving. When you find one in Charlotte, you take note. I also ordered a frangipane (marzipan) croissant, which is always one of my go-to pastries when it's done well. This one delivered--rich, nutty, and comforting without being overly sweet. I'm not much of a chocolate pastry person, so I tend to gravitate toward custard- or almond-filled items, and this bakery clearly understands how to execute those classics. The space itself is beautiful--clean glass storefront, modern aesthetic, and a welcoming feel from the moment you walk in. It's attached to a large apartment complex with underground parking, which makes it surprisingly easy to access. Very walkable, very convenient, and refreshingly low-stress compared to some of the trendier spots. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the prices felt reasonable for the quality. One small wish: I'd love to see a late-day pastry special or a loyalty program. I'm the kind of regular who will absolutely show up more often if there's an incentive--and let's be honest, pastries are hard to resist when there's a little nudge. I'll definitely be back, especially if they start experimenting with more creative flavors. A kouign-amann with poached fruit--nectarine, mango, or passionfruit--would have me running back through the door. And candidly, I'm grateful Charlotte's pastry scene is still growing. Weekdays are a much better time to stop by. Overall, it's a decent place to grab a quick coffee and pastry if you're nearby, but probably not a destination bakery.

While some foods are still a mystery to me - barbecue I can just take or leave, mostly leave - I know coffee and I know baked goods. The croissant I sampled was dry, implying unkindly that the flaky pastry dough was either formerly frozen or not fresh, and while croissants aren't exactly the moistest pastry to be found, the idea behind making them is kneading and rolling in a lot of butter, which I truly could not taste. What a disappointment. And somehow, somehow, my latte, albeit freshly prepared before me, was lukewarm when I took my first sip on the way to the car. How is that even possible? At the last minute, I asked for caramel to be added to my drink, but that was imperceptible too. I'd forgotten to ask for it to be half sweet, so I guess that was a blessing in disguise. When you stop by a bakery late in the day you sort of pays your money and takes your chances, but I visited just before noon. No crowds either. Disappointing all around, though again, the ambiance invites lingering. Cute bistro, lovely people, but - and I cannot believe I'm saying this - I'd have done better at the nearby Starbucks if all I wanted to do was get a latte and pastry.
