Do not sleep on this spot! The best Korean food in the area, I promise. Walking into Gohyang, I felt like I was being invited into a friend's home. Not only did I feel welcomed, the food was also comforting. For two of my friends and I, we ordered four dishes. Everything came out quickly and almost all at once! We started with the seaweed salad which was fresh and crunchy. The tteok boki was an absolute highlight. Add gimmari (noodles wrapped in seaweed and deep fried) and cheese, you will not regret it! These were the perfect complement to the sweet and spicy sauces and chewy rice cakes. The Kalbi was the most delicious. Great sized pieces of meat that packed a punch with flavor. I love the pieces that had some fat and char. And the jjajangmyeon noodles were bouncy and coated with the black bean sauce. Every bite was better than the next. This spot was very relaxed and casual. The servers were so hospitable and friendly. I loved our experience and I will definitely come back for my favorites. There are meals that linger in memory as radiant celebrations of flavor, the kind you look back on with joy. And then there are meals that linger because they were so bad you can't forget them. Our visit to Gohyang Korean Restaurant belongs firmly in the second category. The trouble started right away with the service. I asked for hot tea when we arrived for lunch, and fifteen minutes later it still hadn't come. I had to track down the waiter myself just to remind him -- and we were the only people there. That kind of neglect set the tone for the meal. The food was no better. The grilled short ribs, one of their most expensive dishes, came drowned in a syrupy glaze so sweet it shriveled the mouth. Korean barbecue is supposed to be about balance -- smoke, salt, a touch of sweetness. This was just sugar overload, like someone decided to cook up the "diabetes special." The shrimp tempura was equally bad. Tempura should be light and crisp, a delicate batter that breaks apart to reveal tender shrimp. What we got instead was a crust so hard and joyless it felt like biting into cement. Then came the banchan. Yes, they were served -- but so tiny and stingy that my wife and I were stunned. And what was worse, once those little dishes were picked over, no replacements were offered. In Korean dining, it is customary to replenish banchan as they are eaten, a gesture of generosity that defines the meal. At Gohyang, that tradition was ignored. When we asked for cabbage kimchi, the most basic of basics, we were told it would cost extra because "cabbage is expensive." That's nonsense. According to USDA data, cabbage is one of the cheapest vegetables you can buy. To be told otherwise felt like a lie, a flimsy excuse to cover stinginess. Even the soy sauce was rationed. Instead of a bottle, we were given a dish so absurdly small it looked like it belonged in a dollhouse -- the kind of make‑believe dinner set you'd expect a five‑year‑old girl to play with. It wasn't enough to flavor even a single shrimp. And as if the poor service and stingy food weren't enough, the aftermath sealed the verdict. After eating there, both my wife and I felt ill. I can't testify that they use MSG, but we both experienced the classic symptoms of MSG overload -- pounding headaches, queasy stomachs, and that unmistakable heaviness that follows. The bill came to fifty dollars. For that price, we expected at least a decent meal and basic respect. What we got instead was bad service, stingy portions, cooking so poor it bordered on farce, and a meal that left us feeling sick. Gohyang Korean Restaurant was a disappointment from start to finish. They were generous only with themselves and stingy with their customers. For us, it was one of the worst Korean meals we've ever had, and we will never go back. read more

It's been 20 years since I took a trip to Seoul, and had always been craving some of the cuisine I had there. Brought my wife, who is venturing out into things other than the meat and potatoes style diet.... The whole experience was a hit. There are only two things that could make me drop this below 5 stars: first, the parking. Easy in, but trying to back out of the tight spots and not back right into Rt 9 proved a bit of a challenge. Second, their liquor license was turning over, so they could not serve soju. . Onto the good..... I wasn't sure what to expect. The exterior looks like it might just be a takeout place with a few tables, but the restaurant itself was over half the building and nicely decorated. Our waiter loved explaining the menu items to my wife,, and steered her in the right direction for what to order. The food... outstanding. We ordered kimchi and egg rolls for apps. I was never a fan of kimchi..... until this! Just the right amount of pickled and spice, and a perfect sharing portion. The 4 egg rolls were delicious. Main portions: I got kalbi, she had bulgogi. Both served with a side of white rice. Bulgogi was nicely sliced, with.a hefty portion of meat, vegetables and glass noodles. The kalbi was served on a sizzling plate with onions and just the right amount of sauce. The meal was served with a sampling of other pickled items: radish, glass noodles, and cucumber. The sweet radish and cucumber were our favorites. Cannot wait to go back!!! read more

The food was delicious, but I can't give a 5 star review in good conscience because of problematic food allergy practices. I ordered a bulgolgi beef kibap roll which randomly had crab in it for no reason (and wasn't noted at all on the menu.) Half the menu has other gratuitous fish sauce use like in the kimchi and scallion pancakes. I would like to come back but not unless items containing seafood are clearly marked on the menu. Very impressed with the service and food here. Great variety of offerings on the menu - bibimbap, japchae, fried chicken, curry, so many others. The food tasted very freshly made and the portion sizes yielded enough for leftovers. Prices were reasonable. And service was professional, fast, and friendly. Parking was easy and the location is great. Bar seating is available, along with two sections of dining so the restaurant never feels super loud or overcrowded. My partner got a gift certificate here as a birthday present in June, and we had been looking forward to going here for months. We went to use it to pay for our meal this evening and they told us it had expired and charged us for the meal. They didn't refund the person who gifted it to us or comp the meal (which was less than $75...) -- they literally just pocketed the $75 and made us pay. It really put a damper on our evening, we are so disappointed and will not be returning. Do not buy anyone gift certificates from this place. read more

Five years later, we're visiting Gohyang restaurant again after having moved our middle daughter into her final year at UMass (the first time visiting was when we moved our oldest daughter into her first year at UMass!), and what a marked improvement in the menu and taste! The banchan was quite good with a variety of fresh kimchis (turnip, cucumber, and radish kimchis as well as a bean sprout namul). My daughter had their citron tea which was excellent; my wife and I had a barley tea which was a bit on the weak side however. We shared a kimchi pajeon which was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and tasty all over; and the "GFC" (Gohyang fried chicken) chicken wings which were crispy and delicious although the accompanying sauce was a little lackluster (we were glad they served it on the side). My wife and daughter ordered their eel bibimpap (kind of like a cross between bibimbap and unadon) which they said was very good with nicely caremelized rice. I opted for a Japanese dish: tempura udon noodle soup (I have a fondness for this ...). I must say I was very pleased with it - excellent broth, tempura shrimp were very good, tasty toppings, and thick slippery noodles. Wait staff is pleasant (they are all Caucasian, but not to worry - the kitchen staff is Korean ... yeah I'm probably stereotyping, but still ...) though the service is a little slow - but well worth the wait! read more

For a small town in Western MA, Gohyang really fulfilled my cravings for authentic Korean food. Indoor dining is available, and they even have tables with seats on the floor - akin to seating in traditional Korean restaurants. Next door to the restaurant is a small grocery store with basic Korean/Asian snacks and condiments. The portion sizes were quite generous and the banchan selection was diverse and tasty. We ordered the samgyumpsal kim bap and kimchi pajeon to share. Both were delicious, especially the kim bap! The pork belly was nice and crisp (I believe it was deep fried) and paired with the tanginess of pickled vegetables and umami ssamjang with a crunchy chunk of lettuce for balance. Essentially it was pork belly ssam you find at Korean BBQ rolled up as kimbap - yum! I would definitely come back to have those again. For myself I had the yook gae jang. The broth was rejuvenating, piping hot and SPICY - perfect for my Asian food withdrawal. The meat was a little dry and didn't have the best texture, but the rich broth made up for it. As a fellow UMASS Amherst student with no car haha, I haven't had the time to actually visit Gohyang in person and sit down. However, being located in an area with little to no good Asian cuisine, Gohyang is one of my favorites. The only bad thing about Gohyang is the wait and time it takes the staff to make the food, but I can assure you that everything is very delicious. Their hours are also strange, I believe they open in the afternoon, would like it to be earlier but that's not a big deal. I have tried their different Kimbaps and their regular Seoul one is the best IMO. My friends and I all love their black bean noodles and can never get enough of the sauce, we even save it to eat with rice later. The soups are all very flavorful and milky tasting. read more

My kid and I were visiting for college tours and were surprised to find a Korean restaurant in the area. We got the kimchi pajeon, dolsot bibimbap, and galbi tang. Everything was absolutely delicious and the service was friendly. The food reminded me of my mom's home cooking but also was just as good as some of the Korean restaurants in NY/SF. The restaurant itself is a little small but we didn't have to wait very long for a table. There is also parking in front of and behind the restaurant, which was nice. Highly recommend! read more

This was my 2nd time here while visiting my daughter at Amherst college. My parents- who grew up in Korea were visiting my daughter. They throught the food was very good. Authentic and tasted like home cooking. Soon Dubu (soft tofu stew) very flavorful and tasty. My parents and my daughter liked their galbi (bbq ribs). The bibim bop (hot stone) was also excellent. I was craving tteokbokki so decided to visit this place with a friend. As a Korean, I was a little wary about trying this place as it is the only Korean place around, but the food definitely exceeded my expectations! The tteokbokki was exactly what I was looking for - perfect amount of spice and flavor. I also tried the Gohyang chicken and the soondubu stew, which were both great. There's a small mart next to the restaurant with not many items to choose from, but I was also able to find a lot of stuff not available in other Asian marts nearby. I've been coming to Gohyang for a while because I love korean food. I don't think I've ever had bad korean food -- I've only had good korean food, and AMAZING korean food, so I had to put a bit of a scale on my interpretation of Gohyang. Gohyang's a small restaurant, with a little korean convenience store annexed in. In general, you wouldn't want to show up with a large party unannounced. The food is nothing special. It still tastes great, but you can tell that in comparison to other areas, the delivery was sub-par. The toppoki (2/5) - Too saucy. The ratio just wasn't there, and it felt as though I was drinking the toppoki as opposed to eating it. Yuk Gae Jang (3/5) - Broth was pretty good, but the beef tasted very grainy and the vegetables didn't have a great texture. Kimchi (3/5) - Kimchi normally packs a punch for me, and I like it very saucy. This kimchi tasted like it had been out of the fridge for half a day. Service was OK. I think the servers are college students working part time, and some of them try their hardest and have good intentions but appear rushed and seem like they want to finish with us quickly. Overall, I think I'll come back here, because I love korean food. But if you're not a big Korean food person, you might want to just stick to another place in downtown Northampton. read more

The soondubu was very bland and barely had any tofu. Onion seemed to be the main ingredient as I fished out what looks to be 1/2 an onion. The jjajeongmyun had a bitter taste to it that unfortunately only got worse as the meal progressed, and tasted slightly of jasmine or soap? I thought this place was going to be really good (better than House of Teriyaki in Amherst) because of its reviews and ratings but it is not. I wanted to try something new since there're a lot of little restaurants in the area but I had a feeling of regret after. I ordered the spicy salmon salad and that wasn't too shabby. I had the sundubu soup, however, and that was disappointing. It was lighter than I've usually had it. It almost tasted as if they used a ramen packet in a big pot and put more water than the instructions said to. The rice even looked a little off, to be honest.
