Goemon calls itself a sushi cafe, but it's doing itself a disservice. In my mind, a sushi cafe is one of those dime-a-dozen counter stores you see in any shopping centre, with stock standard tuna-or-salmon seaweed rolls and a basic offering of over-sized sashimi. Crowd-pleasing and good for a quick lunch, but not gourmet and, I suspect, quite foreign to your average Japanese.
Goemon is definitely a step up from this. Cafe might be a fair term - it is casual and friendly. Whilst the service can be slow, it's not really a place to linger and chat as the tables are a bit of a squeeze so it can get a bit noisy, and once the meals are served, the staff do exude a bit of 'closing time' attitude.
That said, it's good basic Japanese - something on the menu for first-timers through to the connoisseur. BYO makes it reasonable compared to the more fancy Japanese options. A great alternative to yet another green chicken curry. read more
