Easily one of the best "let us cook for you" menus in The Netherlands. There is nothing I love more…read morethan stumbling upon a hidden gem restaurant like Benjamin while wandering around the city centre. I'm not going to lie, since coming to The Netherlands, I have missed the bold, inventive and thoroughly delightful menus at restaurants in New York City and San Francisco. To be honest, I never expected to find this in Arnhem - a small city in the East of The Netherlands, but alas - here I am gushing about it. Tucked away just off one of the main streets in the city centre, The Benjamin is the perfect location for a quiet, central dining experience in Arnhem. The decor is bright, modern and cozy. And the staff were so attentive and accommodating. We went for the 4-course surprise menu. I am a huge fan of letting chefs really put their full creativity on display. And this one was exactly as described: surprising, delightful, delicious! I think in The Netherlands they would say "hartstikke lekker". The 4-Course Surprise Menu Course 1: Duck salad with five-spice mayonnaise The dish had subtle Asian-influenced flavours in a light starter. I loved the play of the different textures with the shredded duck and the creamy mayonnaise, and how it was done in such a way that wasn't too heavy. Course 2: Salmon Soup with Tarragon I am baffled by how the chef at Benjamin was able to put so much flavour into this soup! It was amazing. How a salmon soup with no actual chunks of salmon could be packed with so much flavour.. it was incredible! And maybe I am just too much a fan of Tarragon - but wow! It was such a good pair with the salmon. Course 3: Bavette Steak over sweet potato puree, a stilton butter, and fresh figs and turnips I'm going to be honest, by this time we were a little confused at the thought of having steak after a salmon and a duck dish. And to add to the confusion - I was a little dubious when I heard fig, stilton, sweet potato and steak were in this dish. I don't know what kind of magic they are cooking up at Benjamin, but somehow it all made sense when I took a bite into this course. All the different flavours and textures married together perfectly in this dish. The crunch from the turnips and the freshness form the figs with the unbelievably smooth texture of the sweet potato puree, the sharpness of the stilton butter.. amazing! And to top it all off, a perfectly seared Bavette steak that cut like butter. Course 4: Asparagus Ice Cream with basil oil, roasted quinoa and ginger caramel sauce. Desserts like this are what I live for. I love dishes that completely challenge my understanding of what should be savoury and what should be sweet. I have never had an Asparagus dessert, and yet somehow Benjamin left me in awe of what I have been missing in my life. The ice cream was beautifully bright with this very-present flavour of asparagus; a perfect balance between being too shy and too overpowering. The ginger caramel was amazing, so vibrant, so sweet, and a beautiful texture when combined with the crunchy roasted quinoa. And what a surprise to have this delightful burst of fresh basil flavour radiating throughout this dessert! The menu was certainly full of surprises. All in all, it has been a long time since I have dined at a restaurant that had such a strong grasp of flavour, texture and presentation. So much so that they are able to deftly challenge what should and should not be paired together or made into a soup/ dessert / starter, etc. I thoroughly enjoyed my time dining at Benjamin and strongly recommend it for those foodies looking to broaden their horizons with food. Also, side note: I had one of the best Rose's of my life here. Amazing!

The waitress was so friendly and explained whatever we needed. The food came out fresh and great! We ordered a plate of one skewer of lamb and one skewer of chicken breast (Kobide & Joojeh) with side of the yoghurt and cucumber and shirazy salad. We devoured the food very quickly, from the rice to the meat to the sides everything was extremely tasty! We will visit this restaurant one more time before we leave and each time we visit Amsterdam.

This review will be slightly biased since I have Persian heritage, but unlike most people who will turn knit picky and judgmental because their "mom can do it better" or whatever, I find this place absolutely delightful because you don't have many Persian restaurants in Holland and this place simply nails it with textures and flavors. If you think you know "KEBOB" then forget everything you think you know. "kebob/kebab" is a Persian word which simply means "grilled food" or more accurately "charbroiled food". Anything can be kebob, even a tomato. The flavor of the ground meat kebob here is superb!!! Ground meat is called "koobideh" and I highly recommend it. You get a portion of white high grade basmati rice topped off with some saffron basmati rice. The rice is VERY flavorful, floral and the texture is very, very good! Persian style rice is absolutely NON-sticky basmati with a soft core. They cook it and then steam it. You get two charbroiled tomatoes on the side with your dish which is awesome! I love charbroiled tomatoes on the side, and so will you! (seriously, shut up and try it). When I put the first piece of "koobideh" (charbroiled ground meat) in my mouth it was, and I took the liberty to translate this awesome Dutch saying that I've adopted because it makes sense, an angel was pissing on my tongue. It was THAT good! The service is very typical Persian as well. Nice, attentive and warm! He kept calling me and my cousin "my darling" in Persian, kind of a-la chef Ramsey. It's been a while since I've been around real Persians so it felt refreshing and warm. Persians have this sour yoghurt drink that's thinner than buttermilk and they add mountain herbs to it from the Persian regions and it's called "doogh". However, here they have a commercial version of it that I really liked it's without the herbs but its carbonated instead! A fizzy buttermilk! Awesome. BUT, in all honesty, this is something that you will either absolutely hate or absolutely love. So be warned. And then we had Persian ice cream! (I forgot to take a picture as I gobbled it down before the waiter/owner could let go of the dish itself). It's flavored with natural ingredients such as rosewater, saffron and pistachios. I'd go there for just that alone! If there's a pet peeve then it's the saffron topped rice which didn't really taste like saffron but had the color, only. Perhaps because of the high cost of saffron, the relatively cheap menu and because the busy night that they came short. I don't know but honestly, I don't mind that much since the rice itself was very fruity and floral in flavor.

Many good restaurants in Eindhoven require reservations over the weekend in order to dine in. After being rejected prior at other restaurants due to a lack of reservations, we were pleasantly surprised and happy to know there were many seats available at this restaurant. We were also pleasantly surprised when the host told us about their gourmet buffet. The upstairs is an ala cart Japanese restaurant while the downstairs area is devoted to their buffet. The buffet offerings included everything from raw oysters, sushi and sashimi, to delicious warm entrées like mushrooms and garlic and sautéed bok choy along with fried rice and fried noodles. The salad offerings were fresh and absolutely delicious. They have cold plates for the cold food options and heated plates for the hot food entrées. The service staff was amazingly kind and helpful. All reasons we would definitely come back to this establishment.

During our most recent visit our servers at Full Moon were fantastic! The hostest looked us up and down and side. We were happy that three amigos took care of use. One of them was always passing by and filling our tea or taking or delivering dim sum baskets. He had us order in two and a half waves three items, when finished three more, and when more than full we order sesame balls to go. Happy we visited Full Moon.

The tea here was excellent and very fragrant. Most of the dishes were delicious and well-prepared. However, there were two downsides: the steamed grouper seemed to be frozen as the meat was mushy and not fresh, and the braised pork belly (kau yuk) was quite difficult to eat for our taste. Overall, it was a filling meal, and we appreciated that the food wasn't overly salty or MSG-heavy, so we didn't feel thirsty afterward. Worth a visit.
