So, I made the trip to get Upton's Traditional Seitan and just explore the store. They have a variety of good options, especially for those who create their own meals and like to use whole-grain ingredients. The store is compact, but it offers a wide variety of products. You can purchase assorted nuts by the ounce, or packaged options. They also have a selection of fruits, vegetables, a hot bar, a deli section, and kombucha. I noticed that many of the brands they carry have fewer ingredients, less artificial flavoring and sugars. I visited this store specifically to purchase seitan, and I ended up buying a couple of packages for $5.29 each, which I find to be a reasonable price. I couldn't find this brand at any other store, but I chose it because it has minimal ingredients, low fat and sodium content, and a generous amount of protein at 2 ounces. Many processed foods have a long list of ingredients and oils, which makes them unhealthy and fatty. As a vegetarian who is trying to eat cleaner, I appreciate this product. I also tried the Brew Doctor kombucha, which usually costs $2.50. However, they have a special offer where you can buy two bottles for a discounted price. The kombucha is very light and refreshing, not overpowering with vinegar or sugar. Overall, it's worth the drive to get this product. I'll definitely be coming back for it and other products in the future.

Example number one, I ordered online for in-store pickup (there's often a discount offered on the website for in-store pickup) and I planned this around another reason I needed to be at Kent Station on Thursday evening. I also knew that weekend was Kent Cornucopia Days and downtown Kent would be chaotic, so I wanted to make sure I got my order on Thursday. I waited until I got the "your order is ready" email, and it said that the store closed at 7 pm. I got there at 6:50 pm but the door is locked. (This isn't like a restaurant where you don't want to take your last order 10 minutes before closing because cooking and eating takes a while - grabbing my order would have taken less than a minute.) The hours on the glass also indicated that they closed at 7 pm, but the worker who was inside just kind of shrugged when I knocked on the glass. OK, fine. I went back the next day, a different worker was inside. I told him I was there to pickup an online order but I also wanted to see what else they had on sale. He mumbled something about "just multivitamins." Way to make a sale. If you know GNC, you know something is always on sale, and they had posters on the door claiming buy one get one half off of something... I guess we'll never know the details. I just took my online order and left. And, it took less than a minute. I've been here a few times and the level of customer service is definitely lacking. I also noticed they had a sign on the door indicating that they were hiring. I don't know what's going on, maybe they can't retain good employees, but it is frustrating. Do better, GNC. Act as good as you smell !

It's not huge inside, but it carries a surprising variety of vitamins, supplements and natural medications, among other things. There's even a spot in the back for aromatherapy oils, etc if you're looking for that too. I didn't get the name of the woman working here, but she was very friendly and chatty, talking all about different products and benefits of them and such - but never in a pushy, 'forcing you to buy things you didn't want' manner. The place was a little dark inside, but it was probably because the power was out, and they were running off a generator - I'll have to check and compare the next time I'm back. Some of the prices are somewhat more expensive then other places for the same products, a lot of them are very competitive against what you'd pay other places for them. I'm okay paying a little more though if I can find all the things I'm looking for in one convenient little store. Tucked in the side of LA Fitness is an Emerald City Smoothie. My friend was having an off day and…read morewanted one of their signature smoothies. I thought no biggie, I will pop in and buy what he wanted and then leave. I know the LA Fitness in the Landing. It is impossible to miss. As I entered I was surprised that no one was at the reception desk. I figured since LA Fitness is a membership gym they would want to verify if someone has membership when entering but no one was there. Behind the circular desk there were a few other workstations. There was a gentleman at one of these computers who just silently stared at me as I wandered to find Emerald City Smoothie. He didn't move, smile, nothing. His eyes just followed me. Kinda feeling odd by this point I saw the Emerald City Smoothie to the left tucked in. You can't see it when stepping into the space and the one sign is on one wall eye level. But I guess they don't really need to advertise. One young woman was alone cranking out smoothies. She was diligent in her job treating her smoothies like someone on an assembly line. She spoke little and moved fast. There were a few people in front of me and each was served quickly with no commentary. Made me wonder if they should just install a kiosk where customers could put in their orders and she could just make them with no interaction. I left much as I entered, being stared at as I walked away. I don't think I will be back. It was weird.
