This gym also has a reputation for helping folks cut weight. I know many members who have lost 30 - 80 (yes, 80!) lbs here! I myself saw a max loss of 28 lbs. (202 down to 174 at one point.) Greg Ardon, the unassuming owner of this gym (known for his training of Hilary Swank in Million Dollar Baby), has a patient, quiet style that is combined with his extreme knowledge of fighting and a slick sense of humor. With that being said, the biggest lessons you learn here are modesty, self-confidence, and courtesy. These three things are more important than any bag you can hit, weight you can lift, or rope you can skip. I highly recommend you try this gym. 2011 Update: This gym is now officially a pro gym. I came here to join my friend as she's been taking classes and really enjoys it. I wanted to get into BJJ and Muay Thai as well, so decided to join her on the 3 class $19.99 special they advertised on their website to get a feel. After the first class though, they sell you HARD. - I voiced my concerns about lack of time due to work and possibly not being able to commit to 2x weekly for a full year, even though that was the best deal. I'd also be traveling from Astoria to Brooklyn, so that makes it even more challenging. They promised that if I were to sign up for the year, I can freeze my membership, downgrade to 1x weekly, or pay per class as needed. This made me feel better, so I decided to go for the annual contract - Needless to say, work immediately blew up and I was only able to make it to the gym twice over the last 2 months. I called the gym to downgrade my plan so I can just pay per class but was told they don't offer the option to pay per class. I know this is not true because my friend has brought guests to this gym before and they paid ~$30 each for a single day class. I then asked to downgrade to the 1x weekly option, but was told downgrading is not possible. I am only able to upgrade. - At this point, I was extremely frustrated since I signed up under the premise that I could downgrade at ANY time. I asked her to just cancel my membership. She told me I needed to email a different email address to process my cancellation. Once I got in touch, they offered to downgrade my plan, but it was too late. I wanted nothing to do with this shady practice, so I paid the $195 cancellation fee to get out of the contract. If you're able to commit to the full year, great. But if there's any chance you will need to change your plan, don't believe what they tell you.

We came there when it was about to rain so it was not sunny the entire time, it started pouring just as we were leaving.. which made for a super beautiful view of the sky, with sun rays shining through. There are TONS of bushes with different fruits there, which I did not expect.. and also a TON of glass in the sand which is horrible, so BE CAREFUL! There are also spiky plants in the sand as well that hurt if you step on them so at least wear slippers. If you come there with your bike, just know you will have to climb around to get to the beach area. Tons of people windsurfing there which was a pretty cool thing to watch, them being raised up into the air and falling into the water. The view is gorgeous there as well so I naturally had to take tons of photos. There generally ARE people there and you will see them pass by but you can find spots where you are out of view if you want to sunbathe there. Overall a nice little spot to stop by every once in a while while biking by the belt.

What Happened to Plum Beach?…read more Two years ago, I gave Plumb Beach five stars. It was a peaceful little Brooklyn treasure where individuals, couples and families relaxed, people walked their dogs, windsurfers enjoyed the water, and others simply came to enjoy nature. After visiting last weekend on July 28, 2026, I barely recognized it. The issue wasn't the normal sounds of people enjoying the beach. It was extremely loud amplified music from large speakers that could be heard far beyond the groups using them. A senior beachgoer objected when a massive 4'x 3' speaker, positioned only about 10 feet from him and his wife, was turned on at full blast. This couple, along with dozens of other individuals and families, had already been peacefully enjoying the beach before a group of approximately 20+ people, (including babies) arrived and set up beside them with a large tent, enormous speaker and barbecue grills. When the gentleman objected to the volume, the music was initially turned down. Shortly afterward, however, the entire group packed up their tent, speaker and belongings and relocated approximately one city block farther down the beach, near where I was sitting. They then turned the music up extremely loud again. What demonstrates just how excessive the volume was is that even after moving that considerable distance, their music could still be clearly heard back where the gentleman and his wife had been sitting. Near me, it was so loud that I couldn't hear my small personal radio sitting beside me. I watched other beachgoers become frustrated, pack up their belongings and leave what had been a peaceful beach before this group arrived. TO BE CLEAR, this is not about the type, language, or culture of the music. It could have been American, Caribbean, Chinese, Pakistani, Russian, or any other genre or language. The issue is not the music itself--it is the VOLUME. No one person's music should be so loud that everyone around them is forced to listen to it or leave. Public spaces are meant to be shared respectfully so everyone has the opportunity to enjoy them. A few days later, I returned to Plumb Beach hoping my experience had been an isolated incident. Unfortunately, what I found was even more discouraging. The area where the large gathering had been was covered with garbage. There were beer bottles (including broken glass), food containers, disposable plates and cups, plastic bags, charcoal remnants, citrus fruit, and even soiled diapers scattered throughout the sand and among the protected dune vegetation. These aren't just cosmetic issues. Broken glass creates a hazard for people, pets and wildlife, and trash left in the dunes damages one of the most environmentally sensitive parts of the beach. My concern has never been about families gathering or people enjoying themselves. It's about respecting a public beach that belongs to everyone. If you can carry coolers, grills, diapers, food, beverages, and supplies onto the beach, you can carry the empty containers and garbage back off the beach. Plumb Beach WAS one of Brooklyn's peaceful hidden treasures. I sincerely hope stronger enforcement of littering, noise, grilling, and dune protection can help restore the beach so future visitors can enjoy the natural beauty that once made this place so special.

I had a very poor experience here…read more I brought in my bike for a front shifting issue and was charged for derailleur adjustment twice, but the real issue was not identified. Multiple mechanics suggested I might not know how to shift properly, but the actual problem turned out to be a bent chainring. That was only discovered after I went back multiple times and pushed for them to keep looking. It did not seem like the bike had been properly test ridden before I was told the issue was rider error. Communication was also difficult, and the overall attitude I experienced from staff felt passive aggressive rather than helpful. I was largely left on my own trying to sort out what was going on. They also replaced the wrong bolt on my saddle. When I asked about replacing the correct bolts, I was told they did not have the proper ones, and the issue was not properly resolved. After multiple visits, repeated charges, poor communication, and the real problem being missed until I pushed for further inspection, I would not return.

I've been trying to get my little guy comfortable just gliding around on his new bike. One thing I read suggested detaching the pedals until he's ready. I tried to detach the pedals myself but didn't have the right tools. So I brought it back to Bicycle Habitat to have them just unscrew the pedals. And guess what? They charged me $9! To do about 45 seconds of "labor". For removing the pedals of a bike that I just bought brand new from the store. Does this seem right to you? Seems like money-grubbing greedflation jerkmanship to me. It's sad because I wanted this to be the spot where we could come for repairs, gadgets, and service. After this experience, I'm compelled to look elsewhere. Really kind of shameful.

The staff care more about getting you to workout than enforcing strict cancellation/sign up policies, or squeezing you for pennies (the only strict sign up/cancellation I've heard about is for spin classes). You won't get unbearable unlimited texts & calls from them or hard sales pitches like the new workout chain that recently opened in Bay Ridge, good god! You can pay-per-class, and at $25 it's a pretty good deal! But I have an unlimited membership. Here are my suggestions: - Beginners: take Anthony or Daniel. Super helpful & approachable. If you're feeling intimidated, do Saturday @ 10:30am with Daniel. The time & day make it a smaller class. Or Anthony Tuesday @4pm. - Toning w a cardio focus: Total Body class with Anthony, Aiden, or Daniel. (Bernie will fill in, & she's also great). - Muscle building focus: Bernie has THE BEST straight forward weight lifting classes. Especially Arms. She doesn't add tons of cardio. - Booty toning: Aiden's class is legit cheeks on fire. - Weight loss / cardio / fat burn: Jose's classes. He's a really great motivator. His style is much more boot camp drill sergeant. He's doing it so you don't quit! If I could add anything: I'd love an exclusive Ab Only class! Slow, focused ab/deep core the entire time. ESPECIALLY upstairs with the gym equipment (cable machine, captains chair, roman chair, pull up, etc) used for each station, with the remaining people doing ab floor work as we rotate. No cardio. I just want to murder my abs! They also plan special events. They recently held a unique class with a drummer playing live hip hop / dance music with the lights low. I really loved that class! Push past any intimidation or fear & you'll do great. We're all just getting in a good workout. You've got this!
