Ok well it's time to photo dump and finish up long awaited food places visited I was in New Zealand…read morelast month and here is one of the places I visited. Food: 3.5/5. Breakfast was the meal. I had the friend chicken and waffle and a medium mocha. My party had the salmon hash and the creamy garlic mushroom. Texture of the waffle was not crispy but it was tasty with what I perceived as some buttermilk possibly. The chicken was a boneless tender cut with a light crispy coating. The chicken was tasty and the crispy coating held up against the light syrup drizzle and what I describe as a sautéed onion relish with a slight sweet flavor too. The whole chicken and waffle I would describe as an open faced crispy chicken sandwich with slaw. The slaw was average, slight tang to it but not much depth in flavor. Personally I think a pinch of onion powder no salt and pepper would make it perfect for me. What would have made this a 5/5 for me is if the waffle was crispy, and it had to be because it is topped with an onion relish, syrup, and slaw on the bottom layer so as we take each bite it gets soggier and softer. For me, crispy waffles are a must. I grew up eating waffles almost every Saturday morning, as my mom took out her giant heavy waffle maker that had the small square holes not the giant Belgian sized squares. I have this theory that the smaller squared waffles would make crispier waffles. Although the Hilton Hawaiian village has gotten the crispiest Belgian waffles down pat which I can testify to that. The salmon hash was not my favorite as I like texture and this was a mash potato with salmon bits covered in hollandaise sauce, surrounded by baby spinach. A lot of soft textured foods and I would like maybe capers or acidity in my fish dishes. There was nothing outstanding to the salmon hash. The creamy garlic mushroom was tasty and a great healthier option. Plating is on point for all the food presented. Scones were not the best I have eaten in Auckland and this is because it did not use butter, and my orange cranberry scone had a nice crunch but was slightly dry but nothing butter couldn't fix. The pumpkin seed feta cupcake was super moist and tasty as a savory cupcake and was the highlight for me from the bakery case. But I have not had all the baked goods Melba offers so it would be a good idea to check it out again for a better review. Price: the 3 breakfast/ brunch entrees, 3 mochas, 2 coffee white flats, 3 scones and 1 savory pumpkin feta muffin came out to a total of U.S. $84.86 which is pretty good considering the quality of food and ambiance. Ambiance/service : nice clean place. Bright with many windows. Has sort of a modern industrial kind of feel. Our male server was pleasant and prompt but the girl behind the counter when we paid and got the acorns and cupcake was rather unpleasant and rude with both her tone and personality which I will chalk up to maybe having a bad day? I don't know but that shouldn't be brought into the workplace and good customer service is a cornerstone of winning people over to return as regular patrons. Overall I liked the food, nice vibe to the resservice was okay. But don't take my word for it go see it for yourself.

The shabby exterior really leaves little to be desired, but as far as yum cha goes, VR Baker's Restaurant has to be some of the best in Auckland. There are no trolleys dashing by; rather, the waitresses carry around platters of piping hot bamboo steamers by the dozen. I've only visited twice so am still eating my through their dim sum goodies, but so far, I have yet to be disappointed! All the usual suspects are here, including siu mai, BBQ pork buns, pork spareribs, congee, steamed dumplings, innards and feet. They also have other, less common goodies like the sticky rice balls, which I prefer over the banana-leaf wrapped version and are definitely worth a try. I highly recommend the siu mai - they're uber succulent and a prime example of how they should be! As for dessert, the egg tarts are really good as well, but even better are their baked custard buns. If you can't find something you like from what's being carried around, you can ask for a dim sum menu (complete with coloured pictures!) and they will cook to order as well. So communication may be a little strained because many of the waitresses don't speak great English, but the staff are friendly and fast at filling up tea and clearing the tables. And VR Baker's is a bakery too, stocking not only the typical cakes and sandwiches in their cabinets, but also the dim sum offerings. Affordable, huge portions, fast and delicious, VR Baker's Restaurant truly is a hidden gem and is fast becoming my number one pick for yum cha in Auckland!

It's one of my much-loved places to eat in the mall when I have time. This place can get crowded quite fast and its quite popular among the older generation. Their all-day breakfast menu covers all the bases and they do it really well here. I love their french toast. It's served with bacon, maple syrup, and a decent amount of seasonal fresh fruit, although I do enjoy their caramelised banana when they have it! The pancakes here are good too and when I'm feeling a bit heartier than usual, their big breakfast always does the trick (they also have a vegetarian option of this available). If you don't want to order off the menu, they've got a range of baked goodness for you. I always get their vege savoury for a quick bite, and on a cheat day I'll definitely be getting the the chicken and mushroom pie, its always tasty. I don't usually go for their pastas but they're usually sold out by mid-afternoon. Hollywood Bakery is a great option in the mall that's away from the food court and gives you a chance to sit down and relax between shopping destinations. Or just pop in for a coffee to go and a savoury for a quick yet satisfying bite.

My favourite combo to get is a bacon and egg muffin from the hot food cabinet and a flat white. It always tastes like they made it 10 mins ago, and proves to be very popular, as I rarely find more than 1 left in the cabinet in the late hours of the morning. Their Neenish tarts are simply to die for and club sandwiches are a nice addition if you don't want to feel too bad about the amount of fat you're creating. Then, once you're done, continue your shopping escapade without wanting to buy everything that looks marginally delectable. Also, these guys bake cakes for events, make breakfasts and have award winning pies. Seriously, would you go anywhere else?
