They have a very wide and often complete selection of goods. They also have fresh products that are cheaper than in other grocery stores. The downside? Hi-Top is not Hi-Tech. Their cash registers are old-school, so it takes a much longer time for you to pay for the groceries. This causes long lines that make me restless most of the time. Also, if you're gonna use a credit card, you'll need to go to the Customer Service counter just to swipe your card instead of doing it in the Cashier counter itself. So if you really want cheaper prices, you're gonna have to endure the long wait.

Just for comparison, a small 200ml bottle of good quality olive oil would normally cost about P250. So imagine my joy when I got a hold of that (I literally cooked everything in olive oil for weeks on end). If you're buying beer for a party, you can get it here by the box for less. When you're done shopping, stop by Henny Penny just outside for a nice sandwich.

I happened to pass by this tiny Indian grocer in Paseo de Magallanes called Incredible India Food Depot, and it is packed floor to ceiling with food--spices, canned vegetables, curious-looking sugary Indian snacks, several types of dals and legumes, chutneys and preserves, and even Maggi's Indian version of instant noodles called "Multi Grainz" which claims to be healthier (it was a bit bland, if you're wondering, but definitely tastes of Indian spices). They also have ready to eat and frozen samosas, breads, and spring rolls, if you want a quick Indian food fix. I usually frequent Indian grocers for raw ingredients because they're usually more affordable than some large supermarkets, AND you can buy some of these in bulk. Since I'm vegan, some of us need a constant supply of chickpea flour (called besan, which can be purchased here really cheap in a hefty-sized bag), affordable TVP (textured vegetable protein), dals, spices, and the fairy dust of vegan cuisine, kala namak, or black Indian salt that has a distinct, egg-y flavor.

And, it's not at all your usual Chinese-style fresh lumpia with the shredded carrots and garlicky sauce, but rather imagine a fresh and fruity veggie salad nicely wrapped in a fresh lumpia wrapper. It was actually a very pretty sight that you wouldn't expect that it was from a humble food kiosk. It looked AND tasted expensive--it had grapes, mangoes, nuts... YUM. And it was what like... Php 60? They also have a lot of other vegetable and fruit options here. There's a salad bar (Robinson's Supermarkets have the best ones among supermarkets, in my opinion), a Mongolian rice box station with a great selection of veggies (they have mushrooms!), fresh fruit juices, the usual turon, kamote, kakanin snacks, and cheap Pinoy ulam (they had munggo when I was there). So, most of the time I have to make my own Japanese food at home. Fuji Mart is just 3 minutes away from my apartment, and I do stop by here to buy some nori whenever I want to make veggie sushi, and Kikkoman soy sauce for when I want to make vegan yakimeshi. I mean, of course they have nori. But there are other things I like about Fuji Mart, such as they sell good Japanese tofu, instant miso soup, wasabi, Japanese breadcrumbs, kombu seaweed (great for making veggie stock!), Japanese spices, sesame seeds and edamame! I've never come across edamame being sold in supermarkets. I have yet to veganize my other Japanese food favourites, such as tonkatsu, ramen, and gyoza. But once I do take on those challenges, naturally this is where I'll be stopping by for ingredients.

But outside of this, they don't have too much else to offer consumers. I would, for example, like to see them carry the widest possible array of instant noodles, if only because the local ones and the made-in-China ones aren't all that tasty. Japan also has some of the best chocolates and assorted sweets that can grow on you. Even their ice creams with their odd flavors can be winners. Here's hoping that in the months and years to come, they can expand their product line. I'm sure they will have ready buyers for all things Japanese, not only because there is a small Japanese community in Better Living, but because us Pinoys have also developed a taste for all things Japanese.

One of my dad's favorite past times is to come here just for the numerous pika-pika that the staff serve, from fancy cheeses to macaroni to garlic almond breads. Hey, if this is a membership only club, might as well maximize the use right? And if those snacks weren't enough, there's a full-fledged fast food joint just beyond the cashier serving hotdogs and burgers. Perfect after a long period of grocery shopping.

I've been to a couple of S&Rs in Metro Manila and I would say that this one is probably the most hectic. The aisles aren't as wide as the locations on Congressional or Shaw so maneuvering their American-sized shopping carts around the aisles, especially near the baked goods and frozen foods, becomes somewhat of a hassle. The staff here is super friendly and accommodating, especially given the sheer amount of business this location is. I realize that the staff members here appear to be a bit more adept at answer questions than the other workers at other locations. Food here is actually pretty good. I know people ridicule Sam's Club and Costco pizza and their other fast food fare, but for some reason (probably equal parts nostalgia and cravings), their pizza here is delicious!! I recommend the garlic shrimp. The size is huge too, especially for the Philippines.

I first chanced upon Schmidt's…read morefascinating concept hotdogs during Eastwood's Mercato of 2012 and they're just the kind of hotdogs that never leave you. Let's face it. These are not your regular hotdogs. These aren't the kind that get slapped between a bun, slathered with mustard and ketchup then served. These are interesting dogs. Schmidt's gimmick is that the fixings that go on their dogs are based on different countries. My personal favorite is the Coney Island Chili Dog (hold the jalapenos) but they have other things too. The Julius, for example, has Bacon, Caesar Salad dressing and parmesan cheese. The Aucklander has ailoli, mint jelly and tomato relish. You get the idea. These hotdogs are sliced in such a way that they split when they open, making sure that all those toppings work their way into the dog and the bun with every bite. It's pretty brilliant, really. They've also got good snap to the casing which is a must for any decent, non-TJ hotdog. The only downside is the price. For a meal and a drink, be prepared to shell out around 200php. Good thing they're pretty big so you don't have to worry about them not being filling enough.
