For context, I'm a licensed hairstylist, and I told her upfront I didn't have any scalp concerns, I just wanted to relax and enjoy a massage. The setup was immediately uncomfortable. The room is very dark when you're brought in, and the bed has these really high wooden armrests. I didn't realize there were arm massagers underneath them, so I spent the entire service with my arms resting awkwardly on the hard wood, constantly shifting trying to get comfortable. I left with bruises under both of my arms. What really bothered me is that this was easily avoidable. My partner said she also didn't notice the armrests at first, but her provider immediately pointed them out and helped her get situated. No one said anything to me, even though I was clearly uncomfortable the whole time. As for the service itself, there was basically no massage. I asked for firm pressure and got none. No real scalp massage, no face massage. It was mostly light combing, a vibration tool, and a very gentle roller. It felt awkward and surface-level, not relaxing or intentional. I've honestly given better scalp massages during a basic shampoo. I left with a headache, sore arms, and feeling like I completely wasted my time and money. For that price, this should have been a much more skilled and thoughtful experience. To make it worse, they texted after asking for feedback. Head spas originated in Japan, with massage being part of their traditional culture for centuries, including techniques for the head and scalp. Imagine my delight when I received an email informing me that GloUp Beauty Studio on Peoria was turning into Glo Head Spa. I immediately got on their website and booked my appointment. There are four treatment options ranging from $99 to $280 and one hour to 2 and a half hours. I was already feeling bougie, so I booked the second option, the Deluxe for an hour and a half ($160). Each treatment builds off each other, offering more than the one before. This one included everything in the Signature (scalp analysis, cleanse, massage, double shampoo, treatment, and rinse) plus exfoliation, moisturizer, neck & shoulder massage, jade comb, steam therapy, and Gua Sha facial massage. When I arrived for my appointment, I wasn't sure what to expect. The space itself looks a lot different than before, with intentional dimmed lighting to enhance the calming vibe. They asked me to pick my essential oil scent, allowing me to smell all of them: citrus, cedarwood, geranium, lavender, and herbal mint. They offered me something to drink and I declined, having just had coffee. I wish they would've insisted because I found out later that their Sips and Treats are supposed to go with the traditional Japanese experience. Next time, I'll try the mugicha tea and matcha pocky. They give you a comfy robe and slippers to change into and there are lockers in the restroom to keep your stuff in. You're supposed to take your top off and put a towel strapless cover-up. I had to ask for help tying the velcro in the back. Everyone was super nice and helpful. Lupe was the technician that helped me and I appreciated her walking me through every step of the experience. They take closeup pictures of your scalp before and after. Mine didn't show much of a difference because I washed my hair the day before. I felt extremely pampered and relaxed. I highly recommend doing this to treat yourself to something special. They also offer Korean skincare facials and have memberships available.
