You will also want to be a bit selfish and not be the driver so you can completely enjoy the oohs and ahhs views. It is so strikingly beautiful that I -- the passenger through the pass -- wanted to turn around for a do-over. The Virgin River Gorge, located between St. George in Utah and the tiny town of Beaver Dam, Arizona. If you are heading in the direction of Utah, you are in luck, as there is a beautiful river that runs along Interstate 15. The canyon itself was carved out by the Virgin River. Moving through the canyon is a bit of a winding drive, and the rocks jet up, revealing steep, orange and burnt orange cliffs. Unfortunately, there is not a pullout as you are moving through the gorge -- and it is very enticing to want to stop. Given the speed with which people are driving and the winding road, it would not be safe to pull over for a look. Immediately after leaving the gorge, you can stop by the Virgin River Canyon Recreation Area. It is a camping and hiking area, with day-use ($2 per vehicle). The views looking back toward the gorge, though not as impressive, are gorgeous. And there is ample space to walk around, take a lunch and use the restrooms (which are flush toilets and kept clean). There is not easy access to the river from here, however if you have a short stop.

In November 2011 we were preparing to move to Mesquite NV for 3 or 4 months in January. I called…read morethe chamber to ask if the town had any paved bike paths and if so, how many miles were there. I also wanted to know about dog parks as I have two small dogs. The woman who answered the phone seemed unsure of what a "bike path" was. Ok, so I said walking path or trail? She said she knew there were some area's that were paved but didn't know how many or how far. She did know there were dog parks. I asked if she had anything printed she could mail to me, maps etc. She said they charge $5 to mail their brochure. What?? A stamp is .44 I would have paid $2 -$3 but that's it. A chamber of commerce is supposed to be selling their great city. Encouraging travelers and temporary residents to move here permanently. She not only did not excite me about her city she totally turned me off. I spent a month straining my eyes searching the zoomed version of a google map trying to see if there was a trail system. I determined there was a trail system mostly because many of the parks were named "something trailside park" that was a clue. Now we are here, the city has a great map showing all the parks and trails and it's extensive. There are many many miles of paved trails that I can walk, run or ride my bike and pull the trailer with my little yorkies. There are 8 or 9 parks in a town that might be a 5 mile square (if that) and they are clean, have bathrooms and have paved walking trails in each park. I don't have children but the kids play area is very nice. I moved here feeling very apprehensive about what the environment was going to be like. The woman at the chamber who answered the phone that day could have easily sold me on this little city and it's benefits so that I would be excited to be here for 4 months. Once I arrived here and went into the chamber office a man was behind the desk on the phone and seemed overwhelmed with what he was doing. He finally acknowledged me by glancing in my direction, I asked for a trail map, he pointed to the brochure rack and went back to his phone call. He didn't even speak to me. What is the matter with people? I realize that chambers are frequently staffed by unpaid volunteers with little or no training.

And depending on what you want, it's a decent substitute. There's a handful of casinos and hotels-not on par with the luxury ones in Sin City, but respectable, for the most part. If you're into golfing, you can do that just about year-round here, since it stays warm through the winter. You may want to avoid the hottest months of the year-golfing in August can be brutal. Mesquite has a small town feel to it-talk to the locals and you'll find yourself quickly amongst the gossip of who's who and who's doing what. I get the feeling that those who have lived here a long time would prefer that things stop growing-just like most small town lifers. But by the looks of things, I don't see it slowing down any time soon.

The main development is a Del Webb Sun City 55+ community. Most visitors think the major downside is the unbearable summer heat, but residents know the constant strong winds are more of a pain. Because there are few good paying jobs in Mesquite, most of the new non retired residents move to Mesquite because homes are cheaper and commute daily to jobs in St. George and Las Vegas. Most of the amenities are located near the freeway and target tourist needs e.g., gas stations, fast food, and RV accommodations. The high school ranking is poor which inhibits dynamic professional organizations from locating here. I moved to Sun City three years ago KNOWING it had major short comings but chose it for its location and low cost homes and living. I have many individual interests and am very active, and consequently, do not need nice amenities to be happy. However, many of my neighbors constantly complain about the lack of amenities and about 20% have moved since I have lived here. Unless you are a golfer or have several individual interests that keep you busy and happy, I would not recommend retiring here. If you are working and have a family, I would recommend trying to find a way to afford to live in a more cosmopolitan community with better schools.

This time it was doing away with the original sportsbook, and relocating it against a nondescript wall deeper in the casino. Not a good look for us bettors. I was told that Station casinos has taken over this aspect of of our gambling vice. In so doing, I'm thinking Casablanca has given it the Ol' heave ho. The sportsbook has been transformed into a comicbook. Good ridden to the bank of TV's. Out you go ample seating. So long talley board giving the spreads. Usher in the new and unimproved thimble experience. A few roundtop tables, and I wonder what the line on the game is? In the place of the old sportsbook location, installed are yet more uninspiring slots. Yes slots are the bread and butter of a casino. But bread gets stale and butter will turn rancid before long. Before you know it, the Casablanca will lean toward its one time neighbor The Oasis. That remnant is a blight on the landscape of Mesquite. However that infection could spread west if ownership doesn't quit tinkering with what made this casino resort a success. The renovated rooms are nice, and getting rid of the buffet was probably the right decision. What's lacking is the once old school ambiance. Adding new this and new that may not have the desired effect. What may happen is that we'll decide to stay home and gamble on our phones. Or better yet, gamble on our phones while in a national park or sitting on a beach in Hawaii. With diminishing returns hovering, it may not be prudent to gamble on repeat business. Quick Tip: If you want a quiet place to hang, visit the business center next to the elevators. In all the years that I've been visiting, I've yet to see anyone (other than myself) in there. You could literally have a party and not have to worry about being disturbed. It's also five times bigger that the new sportsbook!

It took me a minute or so before I even realized I was talking to an AI - this was the most interactive AI I've encountered to date. Great speaking voice and had zero problems answering several random questions asked in natural language. Really only knew it was an AI when it stuttered on reading back my credit card number. Check in desk staff was super friendly and helpful. We have 2 small dogs so they put us in pet friendly room that was clean with vinyl flooring so any accidents would be easy to clean up. (Not that this is an issue with our dogs but I always question hotels that have carpet in a pet friendly room - like what were you thinking?) Bed was comfy. Water pressure was fine. There was a big dirt lot right next to the rooms where dogs could potty. If I was forced to find a single gripe about this place it would be about the other guests - not the hotel. Rude dudes with big dogs who think leash rules don't apply to them. (Parade your over-compensation around on a leash next time, eh buddy?) I plan on making this place a regular stop in the future. Highly recommend.

I paid 100% in advance. I was picked up by the airport nearly one hour late. When the driver, Taylor, got out of the car a huge cloud of marijuana smoke came out with him. It wasn't a limo or town car but an older model, dirty Mercedes - perhaps 15 years old, very small with a tiny backseat. There barely any room for my carryon bag in his trunk - and I had to cram into the back seat because he had a dog in the front seat with him. Taylor was pretty spaced out and had trouble finding my hotel, the Vdarra. He was also unfamiliar with other Vegas landmarks - like the Aria, the Bellagio, Park MGM. I had to pull out my phone to help him navigate to my hotel. He apologized for being late and not having a town car or limo - but he said the limo had been locked up or repo'd and Peter was working to get it out. I was really worried that he lacked the competence to pick me up for the game - so after confirming he was the driver for the next day, I showed him that he should pick me up at the exact same spot he dropped me off at - and I explained it was critical that he wasn't late. I also reminded him a friend would be joining me, so we would need a bigger car or at least the front seat free of his dog. Taylor no-showed the next day of course. We called, texted, yelp-messaged and availed ourselves of every contact number we had. No one answered. No one came. After about 75 minutes of this we took a taxi. About 3 hours later, Taylor texted and said he was sorry - he didn't realize his phone was on vibrate and missed all of our texts and phone calls. He claimed he was there the whole time, however (he absolutely wasn't). Peter also yelp-messaged about the same time saying "Let me try!" and nothing more. He refused my requests to call me. After the game, surprise-surprise, they no-showed again. We waited about an hour and a half in the designated meeting spot with no response to phone calls or texts. Eventually, found a free driver to take us back to the hotel for $100. And again, with no surprise, they no-showed the pre-booked trip to the airport. Still no call or contact from Peter and team. While their rate was very competitive, this company is a clown act. If you must book them, absolutely do not pay in advance and I would never, ever, trust them with anything important.
