This spot was such an unexpected treat during our recent visit to Houston. Located just a stone's throw from the heart of downtown Houston, the historical Glenwood Cemetery offers stunning views of the downtown skyline peeking through the oaks and Magnolia trees that fill this cemetery. This is one of those dreamy southern cemeteries you picture from the movies with historical figures like Howard Hughes calling it their forever home. The lanes weave through beautiful landscaping and a well-shaded path. It's ideal for a romantic stroll and taste of Houston's past. This cemetery reminded me of those you would find in Savannah or Louisville, Kentucky. Its certainly worth the ten minute drive out of the way to soak in a fresh view of downtown and southern Houston vibes.

First I was afraid, I was petrified, Kept thinking I couldn't walk alone, With all these graves by my side, But I spent so many hours, Thinking how I'd yelp this place, I grew strong, I learned how to write on, And so I'm back, Out on Washington, I just walked in to find it here, With nice headstones all over the place, I should have stole the FTR, I should have added this to my bookmarks, If I had known for just one second, A five star I would get to see! Is it weird to rate a cemetery a 5 star? I knew this would be an interesting exploration right when I drove in and saw a familiar face on the side of the road with a camera in hand...I scream out, "Gretchen?" Sure enough it was our very own top yelper out and about taking pictures. I gracefully asked if I could join her on my tour around the cemetery. She showed me some very recognizable Houstonian families and even showed me where Howard Hughes' burial site was. The headstones in the place are ridiculous. It was like walking through a museum with statues all around. If you are aren't creeped out by the fact that it's a cemetery I suggest you come check this place out. As it is one of the best kept secrets in Houston.

This is on the list of cool and weird things to check out in Houston! Being someone who loves old cemeteries this was a really cool one. The gravestones are so exquisite with large beautiful angels that are simply breath taking! One of the coolest parts is the Republic of Houston tags that some of the very oldest grave stones have them. But the must-see grave is that of Howard Hughes. It's a bummer that it is so far behind a gate, but it is a cool site none the less. A bonus of this place is the incredible view of the Houston skyline from The edge of the cemetery overlooking the Bayou.

Absolutely beautiful. This is a beloved gem in Houston. You can drive through or park on the side and walk. It's certainly breath taking either way.

Hubby and I love to learn history and we visit cemeteries once in a while to lurk for famous people from history. With Howard Hughes being here, we had to go. This was the prettiest cemetery we have been to. Sure, it isn't anywhere near as old as some we have been to, like ones in Boston, but this one is breathtaking! The grounds are well kept, the family plots were beautifully done, the statues were gorgeous. There are confederate soldiers, Spanish American war heroes and the man who created Texaco. Lots of history here, just be sure to be respectful when visiting. Security didn't bother us as they did in some other reviews. The huge trees were amazing.

Upon approaching Glenwood Cemetery on Washington, you will notice the ivy covered fence. A few years ago, before "the gentrification of Washington Ave," this wall really stuck out amongst the warehouse area. Now it's almost being swallowed up by ugly condos. The second you pass through the ivy-covered gates, you are immediately transported to a enchanting space. Quite a bit of Houston history is buried in this peaceful area, just waiting to be stumbled upon. I have found Howard Hughes' burial site (thanks to a helpful punk rock kid I spoke with one night at The Next Door bar). It is elegant in its Art Deco simplicity. I've also recently found the Hobby's site. Unassuming, especially next to a large colonnade, but with a beautiful view behind. I have yet to find Gene Tierney's site (actress, most popularly in Laura), Judge Hofheinz (we have him to thank for the Colt .45s/Astros, Astrodome, and Astroturf...he even owned the Ringling Bros. and Barnham & Bailey Circus for a short time in the 60s), and Glen McCarthy (oil tycoon, owned the Shamrock Hotel, if you've seen the movie Giant, James Dean's character was loosely based on McCarthy). There were originally two separate cemeteries: Glenwood and Washington. Over the past year, the space in between has been remodeled and there is now a short winding drive that connects the two. Beyond the history, you will find a relaxing, gorgeous space on the edge of busy, noisy downtown along this stretch of Washington and Memorial drive. It is deceptively large and after a while the narrow, labyrinthine street through the all-starts-to-look-the-same cemetery, could get you lost. Keep your eyes open for the tiny exit and office signs. My suggestion is once you enter the cemetery, head towards the right. You will pass the winding road leading to Washington cemetery and head into the older section of Glenwood. Oh, also be mindful of the hours: 7am-5pm. I wouldn't want to be accidently locked in overnight.

I know this might sound odd but the Glenwood Cemetery is an interesting place to go. Among the historical figures put to rest here, there is a wealth of gorgeous statuary dating back over 100 years. With old growth trees and some places where you can see the skyline of Houston, Glenwood cemetery is a beautifully maintained cemetery with a lot of history. Among the notable burials at Glenwood are William P. Hobby, Howard Hughes (Jr. & Sr.), and Maria Franklin Prentiss Lucas Langham Gable (married to Clark Gable). There are also numerous former governors, business founders and even a President from The Republic of Texas. Glenwood was the first cemetery to be professionally designed and has been open since 1871. This historic cemetery is a serene and lush environment in the bustling area off Washington Ave, near downtown. One section of the grounds overlooks the Buffalo Bayou. For Houston, Glenwood is a piece of history, beautifully preserved.

There are a lot of people who find cemeteries morbid and creepy but I am not one of those. I think they are beautiful and Glenwood Cemetery is no exception. We were visiting the nearby Art Car Museum and noticed this on other lists of places to see. I did some quick research and learned that Gene Tierney Lee, one of my favorite old Hollywood actresses, is buried at Glenwood. Right away, this became a must-see for me. Howard Hughes and family are also buried here. The grounds are well-kept and, as another reviewer said, you feel like you're in another world when you are walking around the cemetery.

I don't know how much it cost to have them take care of you from A-Z but I just know whatever it was, it was worth every single penny. They are so thorough. They think of everything! Jerry you run a tight ship and it shows! So very impressed with you and your entire team. What I loved most is how every single place we needed to be was already strategically planned out. You can tell they have done this many times. And they did it well. From the flower placement, the monitors, the hors d'oeuvres, the reception, the drinks, the cold wet towels with the cold water bottles served to us in scorching heat during the burial, the big umbrellas you pulled out of your never ending Mary Poppins type bag for the pallbearers so they could have some shade. Even down to the mini paper fans. The way he was able to relay all of the families request and wishes in a professional manner to the guests. The way every single person on his team was dressed (the garments were so nice) how they continuously presented themselves professionally. They made you feel like you were at the funeral of the President of the United States. (Although, I was told they have done it there before) I think the most impressive thing about this place was how they made the widow feel. In that moment during all the events he was 100% her biggest supporter and gave her the peace of mind she needed while she was grieving. He knew exactly what to do every single time. And he was such an all around nice guy. Very approachable. Great job to Geo H Lewis. I've attended many funerals and this one definitely raised the bar. This service had been prepaid by the relative and I was in charge of carrying out the service within the expenses that were offered. In reviewing the expenses there was one cost I was questioning and in doing so, Mr. Drummond took offense to my questioning it and he became angry and agitated to the point that he declared that his funeral home would not honor the contract and would not hold the funeral service. Through some expresson of apolgies on my part he agreed to go forward with the service which we did and it turned out ok. Nothing like threatening a grieving person who is trying to understand the costs as well as having to plan a service only to threaten to cancel the agreement with only two weeks before the service. I will be contacting the Texas Funeral Service Commission to register a complain on Mr. Drummond's ethics and lack of professional empathy

Their visitation/memorial were elsewhere but they are buried here so I can only comment on that part of their services. They are conveniently located right off of I-10 and have a decent amount of parking, though when you go further in, it's mostly street parking so not an actual parking lot/spaces. Depending on how far your loved one is buried, you might be able to just park by the main building and walk over. The grounds are extensive so I've never been able to explore properly as my parents are buried just being the mausoleum, so we could walk if we wanted to. It's not bad if it's not summer. For the first burial, I didn't have much to do with the planning. However, for the latest one, we had the pleasure of working with Chase at Memorial Oaks. My remaining parent had the forethought to plan everything "just in case" so when we went, we only had minor decisions to make within the "package". It was a pleasant surprise since it was a sudden death. He was very approachable and easy to talk with. He was also pretty responsive. We didn't meet again after that as the burial service was on the weekend and they are apparently busy those days. More accurately, it's generally busy. When we finally met with our funeral director at another funeral home, the scheduled date for everything was a little over 2 weeks later. Not due to choice, but those were the earliest dates available. They do say someone dies every 2 seconds on Earth. Based on that, it makes sense. The receptionist building is quite nice, bordering on fancy. They have super thick and soft disposable hand towels in the bathroom, their cookie platters are never empty, and they have beverages. Quiet with soft music, a bit of a solemn environment. The grounds itself are fairly well kept, but not the best cemetery I've been to. They can be quite nice to relax in and some seem to encourage that. Not this one (no randomly placed benches under trees, minimal sidewalks, no picturesque stream running through the grounds with a bridge over it). However, I don't really see overgrown grass or weeds there which is nice. Wear sensible shoes after a rain because the ground can get a bit soggy. It's a place to "visit" your deceased loved ones, but it doesn't really go much farther than that. Mostly because... My one complaint are the mosquitoes. Every time I visit, we get attacked by mosquitoes. They are voracious there. And relentless. And I usually encounter those huge ones that actually hurt as their proboscis pierces through skin; no special numbing mosquito saliva for them! No matter the season, they are there ever since the first burial 6 years ago. Every. Single. Time. I wish Memorial Oaks would spray for mosquitoes because my family has never stayed for longer than 5-7 minutes because of it and my parents are buried next to a bench so we could definitely linger for longer and maybe even picnic there. But we haven't because my family includes younger kids and it's best that they not become a part of the buffet either. (Or maybe that's what they're going for? Hah. Kidding.) Aside from the mosquito problem, this is a nice cemetery (and funeral home) that I would overall recommend. Great service and nice amenities. Except for the mosquitoes. That's the reason why I'm only giving 4 stars. Tip: I highly recommend looking into "packages" if you have the monetary means. You can pay monthly and they are a HUGE help to the people helping arrange for funeral services once you're gone. I'm thinking about doing it myself and I'm not middle aged yet. Just in case.
