Working in Newark everyday allows me to enjoy lunch at Hobby's a few times a month…read more The restaurant itself is very dated and old school. Lots of Devils memorabilia is hung up throughout. Basic seating with nothing fancy. A full jar of fresh pickles is on the table. The pastrami is second to none. Seriously. You get a generous portion of pastrami on rye. Greasy, fatty, just perfect! The onion rings are the best. They are famous for a reason. I go a few times a month so, I'm always greeted by name and promptly seated. The food always arrives shortly after the order is taken.

Luckily I found Hobby's Delicatessen via Find Me Gluten Free and was so glad to find that they do legitimate gluten-free options with a dedicated fryer and prep space to prevent cross contamination. I had the gluten-free pastrami wrap with fries for $23.95 and my husband had the #5 pastrami and corned beef with coleslaw and Russian dressing for $25.95. he also got the drip coffee with free refills for $3.25. Service was amazing. Owner's came out and chatted with us and preemptively made sure that I was aware that my food was safe for me to consume. Our waitress was incredibly personable and sweet. There were free pickles on the table. I'm not even a pickle person but I had three because again, I've been dying for vegetables after being in Europe. Great portions, safe celiac options, personable service, refillable drinks and no charge to use the toilets (although I didn't need to use them during this visit) This is what makes American restaurants great and Hobby's ticks all of those boxes. I go here often enough and the customer service is amazing. They also have rewards and an app now…read moreso I recommend getting your points. Nice black-owned spot with variety of vegan options and it is clean. There's space to dine-in and they are open on Sundays. The energy is also open enough where strangers will have a convo while waiting. Coming from Brooklyn, I'm happy to have this spot so close to where I am now. Savory: My go-to is the chickpea tuna sandwich. I've tried it on a roll, long sub, and gluten-free... highly recommend the long sub. It's way too messy on the roll for me. Typically get it with the works. The potato salad is also very good most of the time (sometimes the potatoes are a little undercooked). I've also had the macaroni salad and the fried mushroom sandwich which are also good. I definitely enjoyed the thanksgiving special with stuffing (highly recommend that if they bring it back this year). Tip: if ordering a hero and you don't see yourself eating the entire thing in one sitting, I recommend requesting for the sandwich to not be cut so you can cut it evenly on your own For baked goods: the peach cobbler is good and it comes in a cute cup with a little spoon. I've also had the lemon cake & rum cake. Would order all 3 again. Would love to see donuts or cinnamon rolls (hopefully without cashews or walnuts due to my allergy). DRINKS: I haven't had a drink there that I would get again. The teas are overwhelmingly sweet; hibiscus punch was a lot like kool-aid to me. I also don't recommend the matcha if you are a matcha snob. Harper's Cafe is a great black-owned spot for a consistently good latte and they use quality matcha if you want quality nearby. Great spot with lots of options, especially if you're looking for a black-owned spot to support.

The…read morequality of the food is definitely the reason people keep coming back, and those sandwiches are some of my favorites there. However, my experiences with customer service have been mixed. The woman with the gray hair working at the register, I'm not sure if she is the owner or manager has come across as rude toward me on multiple occasions and has given me uncomfortable looks while I'm paying. I've also personally noticed what felt like different treatment toward some Jespy clients compared to other customers coming in, which made me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome at times she treats the Jespy clients differently. The setup for ordering subs can also be a little confusing, especially if it's your first time there or if the deli is busy. The line and ordering process could definitely be organized a bit better. The service overall could be friendlier and more welcoming. It's also a little pricey, so I don't go there very often. That being said, the food itself is still very good and worth trying if you're in the area.

If you're not familiar, I'm not talking about ground meat sloppy joes. This refers to meat, Swiss cheese, coleslaw, and Russian dressing on layers of rye bread. They have many different options. Their rye bread is superb and the quality of the food is excellent. My favorite is the Maplewood Joe. The people who work there are friendly and helpful. I don't care what anyone says, this is far better than Millburn Deli.

They still gave unchopped beef. I posted the video of the sandwich when it arrived to me on snap chat and someone commented "I hope you didn't get that from the east orange location and if it is from there I hope you didn't call it in or they will F it up". That's a shame that the customers know their order will be ruined because you call the order in. I didn't eat the sandwich because the meat was chewy so those expensive sandwiches should really be no more than $10. The salad my friend had wasn't made with care. It was still filled with water so it pooled at the bottom of container If youre prices are going to be that high so should the customer service and the food quality.

Previous time I decided to splurge, someone named Yenni made me an absolutely wonderful sandwich and did so with good positive energy, just great professional customer service. She made me want to come back despite the price, because she made it worthwhile in her service and the quality of sandwich. So I went again today, but Yenni wasn't there. This time I asked the woman making my sandwich if she could put a little extra banana pepper because the ordering kiosk didn't offer that option, and she said, "Did you pay for more???", then when handing me my uncustomized sandwich, she asked to see my receipt when clearly it was my sandwich to begin with. Then later on I found out she put potatoes on my sandwich, which was supposed to be an Italian cheesesteak. Who puts potatoes on an Italian cheesesteak??? So let's review: overpriced and limited customization within what they do have, bad service aside from Yenny, and the food is so-so. I can even put up with so-so food if that's what's in the immediate area, I can put up with paying a few extra bucks if that's all that's in the area, but if you can bind those two and add on poor and unfriendly service, then no thank you. MAYBE if I could get Yenny every time, but I likely won't walk back in there to begin with anyway. So congratulations, you were stingy on not giving me a little more of a topping, and now you've lost a customer in the area who might've otherwise convinced others at my school to use you guys, but hey, you've still got those few extra banana peppers to hang on to.
