John's Market has been at this same location since 1917 (103 years-WOW) when 85 year old Paul's father, John (as in John's Market) opened the Market. You sometimes hear that some of these places are like taking a trip into the past. In this case, nothing could be truer. John's is a no frills, cozy, friendly, nostalgic, neighborhood Italian eatery certainly reminiscent of the 1920-1940's. The walls are covered with photos of old time police, firemen, sports figures, visitors, etc. which certainly add to the classic Italian ambiance and vibe this place puts out. Old wooden tables lined in 3 rows offer a communal eating arrangement for John's customers, who clearly were pretty much all regulars and who knew each other. A lot of Italian language conversations going on here. By the time we left we also were friends with everyone around us. It's that kind of place. As soon as we entered we were met by the current owner, Paul, who is John's son and who was celebrating his 85th birthday today. He even shared his birthday cake with everyone. Our waitress, Grace, could not have possibly been nicer or more accommodating. We started off with a complimentary oil based spread of vegetables which went perfectly with the nice fresh Italian bread which we all shared as we waited to order. We started with a choice of white or red pasta fagioli. I had the white and I have to admit it ranked with some of the best pasta fagioli I ever had. (Paul says that he didn't want to brag but his escarole and beans would be the best I ever had-next time.) My entree was a simple Chicken Parmesan sandwich which was well filled with two nice pieces of chicken covered in a very tasty and tangy tomato sauce (gravy) served on really delicious Italian bread. Outstanding! One in our group ordered an egg, pepper and potato sandwich on Italian bread, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Said he hadn't has one in many years which made it all the better. We then enjoyed Paul's birthday cake with some complimentary coffee while talking with Paul about the history of his establishment and the many pictures covering his walls. Great lunch, great time! I highly recommend stopping by John's if you get the chance. You won't be sorry. By the way John's is a BYOB. Thursday is his Special's Day' where you get served what he makes that day. The pastrami was tender, flavorful, and NOT overly salty. The coleslaw was tasty, the bread was soft, and the house sauce with the spicy mustard? That combination was everything! My only regret is that I ordered a quarter because I absolutely should've gotten a half or honestly, a FULL sandwich! I was sitting there wishing I had more.
