I wanted to see Dr Cook because my eyesight has decreased rapidly recently. I had to fight to get the appointment because the front office lady wanted me to see the optometrist not the opthamologist. I told her not only did I need to update my prescription but that my eyesight has been getting bad so I wanted a full exam of my eyes. She made my appointment for 3 weeks out. I show up for my appointment and she has me fill out all the forms and takes my co pay then tells me that Dr Cook will not write a prescription for contacts. I said I have waited 3 weeks for this appointment and need my prescription refilled. She said Dr Cook is a surgeon and will not write a prescription that I need to see the optometrist for that . I said you mean to tell me a specialist of the eye will not write a prescription and why did you not tell me that to begin with. Very rude and very disappointing. I have been a patient at Alvarado Eye Associates for years. In the past I visited various doctors who practiced there and have never had any complaints but now Dr. Cook seems to be the only physician. I returned from a month in London with a terrible case of red, burning, tearing, itchy, swollen and granulated eyes and was able to be squeezed in the next day to see Dr. Cook which I greatly appreciated. After explaining my symptoms and his exam, he indicated that I had a bad and very infectious case of viral pink eye for which there was nothing he could medically do but that it would definitely worsen before it would improve. He warned me to stay away from others, to wash my hands constantly, to apply lubricating tears, and to return in a week since there was a chance that I would develop infiltrates which would need steroids. At the same time I also had a terribly sore throat, congestion, fatigue, and a cough. After several more days with nothing improving, I made an appt to see my regular general practice doctor since I was shortly leaving town again for a month. He assessed my situation and prescribed both a short-term antibiotic for my body symptoms as well as some antibiotic eye drops in the event that my infection was bacterial rather than viral. I began those measures and then two days later returned to see Dr. Cook for the week follow-up. My eyes had some minimal improvement and my body symptoms as well. During his exam Dr. Cook first indicated my eyes were clear but then he checked again and changed his assessment, indicating that one eye had 3 infiltrates and the other 1. He said I needed to begin steroids to try and prevent further damage. At this point I explained to him that I had seen my GP who had prescribed both the antibiotics and Dr. Cook became instantly enraged, yelling at me that I "had made a terrible decision" in seeking another doctor's advice and that I had just better"take my eyes back to THAT doctor." I was gobsmacked by the level of outrage he directed at me, especially in not understanding that he was only treating my eye condition and that the reason I sought another doctor's help was for the other issues I was experiencing. Mistakes can be made while determining the origins as either viral or bacterial. Anyway, I was deeply shocked by his unprofessional attack on me and I left shaking and upset. When I returned home and relayed the story to my husband, he was furious at the way I was treated and indicated he felt we should both leave Dr. Cook. Two days after this experience we again left San Diego to spend a few days on the central coast before continuing on to northern CA for a week-long visit. Since Dr. Cook indicated the existence of infiltrates and that they could worsen, I decided to seek further medical direction from an eye specialist in San Luis Obispo. During this thorough new exam, the doctor indicated that I definitely had NO infiltrates in either eye and that in fact he suspected my eye condition was neither viral or bacterial-related but rather an extreme allergic reaction that worsened with the very dry airplane environment. He assured me I was in no way infectious, never had been with this episode, and then prescribed steroid eye drops which have already brought about more relief in one day than I have known in the last 2 weeks. Neither my husband nor I will ever return to Dr. Cook and instead we will take our future eye care out to the Shiley Eye Institute in La Jolla. His outrageously rude belittling of me is not an attribute I choose in the physicians with whom I entrust my medical care. And, in reading through the previous Yelp reviews of him, my own experience was sadly not the first. AVOID. Choose better. read more

I did hear Dr Cook talk negatively about another patient (pretty loudly & for a good 5 minutes) prior to him meeting with me. Thought this was unprofessional. Also there was an Opthamologist technician who was the one who determined my prescription using the phoropter (that machine where they ask "is 1 or 2 better"). It was the first time I had a tech do that in my whole life of wearing glasses and contacts. I updated my review but they really just want your money. DONT COME HERE! Sara (office manager) is so incredibly rude. I was referred to him by my insurance and when I arrived for my appointment I was told by Sara that my insurance wouldn't cover my visit - hence, I assumed I was denied coverage. This is a very pretty office, new and well-decorated. However, the service is horrible. We had an eye examination, nothing out of the ordinary, ordered contact lenses (used them before and just getting additional lenses, no additional fittings required) and were told they would arrive in 1 week. Two weeks later, nothing. When I called to check, they cannot tell me if the lenses arrived or when I can pick them up. read more

I started experience flashers and several floaters in my right eye. Also a gentle tugging or pressure on that same eye. My regular ophthalmologist cannot see me for medical conditions, only for Vision Care so his office staff referred me to Dr. Cook. I went in scared and anxious but hopeful that we would figure out what was creating the problem as it looks like fireworks going off in my eye for 6 + days now. When Dr Cook came into the room I felt very confident in his testing and evaluation. (For approximately 5 minutes) He quickly had me look several different directions why he's shown a bright light in my dilated eyes. He then stood up and said that if there was any doubt in my mind that I was old now there was proof ad this was just a sign of age. I am 52. He told me that I now needed to call my insurance and get a referral to go see another opthamologist for a vision check as he saw no tears in the retina. I explained that I was also waking up with that same eye being very weepy and a pressure and he said one symptom had nothing to do with one another as he was walking backwards out of the room. When I said I was confused as they occurred on the exact same day...(?) He then backed up and said he was feeling very uncomfortable. I said I don't understand... and he said he was feeling very uncomfortable and them mocked me by turning to the technician and saying am I not making sense to you? Are you confused by what I'm saying? I was SO SHOCKED by Doctor Cooks behavior! I was shaking and very upset. I really struggled to make sense of what had just occurred and was barely able to listen to what the technician was then sharing with me as though nothing had just happened. When I said to the technician that what just happened was totally inappropriate and I was very sorry that Dr Cook put him on the spot like that, he suggested (as though it were a cry for help), that I go speak to the office manager Sara. In fact he said I'll walk you to Sara's office. so he then took the time to explain the many things that Dr Cook did not and yet I still feel like I walked out with half of an appointment if that. I) I went and spoke with Sara and I asked if this was normal? She said that it doesn't happen often but it has happened before. Had I read these other reviews I wouldn't have gone in the first place. She said she was sorry and she wished she could do something for me. Then she gave me two other Ophthalmologist names and numbers. What the heck? What a waste of time not to mention my $40 copayment not to mention whatever my insurance was billed for this poor excuse for an evaluation. Quite frankly I think he's mental. I would highly recommend not to go here and hopefully Dr Cook will retire soon as he has no business treating patients. I feel I need to begin again with another Ophthalmologist... read more

I only called for a consultation and the person that answered was ready to quote me prices for the lasik then she said it could be more or less .. not sure why you would even quote over the phone before seeing a patient but then they wouldn't work with me on the appt for the consultation which is a first for me and I work in the medical field. They only do consults on Mondays and Tuesdays and the Monday I had off doctor was off .. by this point I was over it. They don't seem friendly and from the reviews I read not too great work either so I think I ll pass. I was referred by a childhood friend who had her lasik done here years ago and loved it. In April of this year, I completed an annual diabetic exam with Dr. Cook. The eye exam neither was as thorough nor did it include new technology as I have always experienced with previous doctors: Due to extreme light sensitivity which triggers migraines and due to a health condition, I requested a retinal image of which I was prepared to pay extra; however, the technician informed me "we don't do that here". Dr. Cook even joked, "I'm glad I'm the one who will be giving you a migraine." Not only crass but not humorous to me! I chose Dr. Cook based his online information. I have had retinal imaging for several years and was shocked this office is not equipped to perform this modern procedure. Furthermore, the technician who did my prep before seeing Dr. Cook told me I do not qualify for Lasik then Dr. Cook told me I do. So, why am I just now finishing this review? Yesterday I went to Dr.. Cook's office to get my prescription for contacts and was told they did not have a prescription on file that I was only given a "medical" check up and would need to schedule another appointment to have a contact lens fitting exam. What? I asked why I was not informed of this at the time of my visit and was given the excuse that Dr. Cook was a medical specialist and didn't perform those exams unless requested. First, I made it very clear during my exam that I needed a prescription for contacts since that is all I have worn for years and never once did anyone, including Dr. Cook, tell me I was not going to receive this particular exam. (Every Dr. of optometry I have seen in all my years has given me a thorough eye exam using modern procedures and I was always given a prescription for contacts.) Second, in my case at least, they created a situation that would cause me to spend extra money for an additional exam. In the meantime, I am left without a prescription now that I have used the last of my contacts. I suppose I am left with having to file a complaint with Medicare! read more

I would not recommend this group if you're just looking to get a simple prescription for new glasses. I was referred here by my insurance and had no idea what to expect. The place is nice of course. It's Coronado so that's a given. Dr. Cook was the person that did my exam which anyone with glasses knows the drill. Look through the eye scope or whatever it's called and as he changes the lens you say bad, better, good, yes, no, perfect, and so on. After he's done he hands you your prescription and off you go to get new glasses and frames. Well you'd think it would be pretty hard to mess it up but he did and I knew it the minute we were through. My mistake was I didn't say anything. First thing I noticed he was in a hurry. He simply moved way too quickly not giving me any time to focus on each selection so not only did I feel rushed, I was rushed. That's really all it was. He did not take the time necessary to let me focus on each picture and he actually didn't do the full exam. He cut it short! Really short. I mean I've been getting eye exams for more than 20 years. I know the drill and when I went through his drill I knew he was not doing it right but like a fool I trusted him and even though the exam took half the time they usually do I paid them and off I went with the prescription. I took it to the frame shop near me and picked out what I liked and left. A week or so later I got the glasses back and they were so off I couldn't even see out of them. It was like looking through a magnifying glass or someone else's prescription. Long story short, I had to make another appt. go back to his office, I requested someone different and they took the right amount of time and got the right prescription. Thankfully all it cost me was time since I didn't have to pay for another office visit or the re-setting of the prescription into the new frames. Bottom line, Dr. Cook needs to get his act together. What's the point of rushing a patient through a process that doesn't take that long to begin with? Especially a process that is very detail specific and needs the kind of doctor that is relaxed which in turn gives me, the patient, the feeling that I can take my time and make the correct choice. He rushed me, plain and simple. He is not a patient doctor and I don't recommend him to anyone. Having to have my glasses redone took a lot of time out of my busy life and was extremely inconvenient. I went to the La Mesa office on 9/26/2016. I was given a very high recommendation to Dr. Cook by a good friend. I have multiple eye problems. His office scheduled me for a second opinion. Basically I was told I was out of region(I live in what he called the Metro region per Sharp Community Medical Group). I was given a brief exam and was told to go to a Doctor in the "Metro" region. He also told me "by the way I won't be taking HMO'S in the future." Ok don't most people have HMO'S? I guess he is living in the past. Gone are PPO insurances for the most part. Not accepting HMO'S means no business. If you like Dr.Leo Marvin from the movie "What about Bob" you probably will love Dr.Glenn Cook. I feel bad because I referred a loved one to him but now we have to get a referral to a different doctor since Dr. Cook will do the same to him as he did to me,send him back to "Metro" thus wasting my loved ones time and taking a copay he should not have to pay twice. I will likely report Dr. Cook to Sharp Community Medical Group so they know Dr.Cook has intentions of not accepting HMO'S in the future. Dr. Cook is very knowledgeable and did a great job in explaining the entire process and also in providing the best care pre and post surgery. It has been two weeks since my surgery with Dr. Glenn Cook. I found Dr. Cook and his excellent staff to be friendly, knowledgeable, and highly experienced. Special thanks to Diane for scheduling my surgery so quickly, and thanks to Jeff for handling my disability claim forms. The procedure was easy and quick with zero pain and instant results. I went from 20/200 to 20/40 which is a huge improvement for me with my history of retinal detachments. Either incompetent or dishonest. I tried to have him remove a pinguecula from my eye. I wanted him to get all the mass, including the harder to reach bit. He told me what I wanted removed was not part of the mass, even though it was continuous and seemingly the same. Sure enough, after the he removed only half of it, the irritating mass regrew from the part of the growth he refused to remove. I had to hound his office for weeks for the results I was owed. He illegally divulged my confidential patient information to someone I lived with, and said that counted as my results when I finally I cornered him. Wasted hundreds; procedure was a failure and source of great distress. Avoid this place. I've experienced muggings that were more pleasant and productive. read more

First let me say SHOP AROUND! Do your homework and know not all reviews are by patients or those using their services.. Now, my wife was sent to Dr. Cook to be evaluated for possible detached retina stemming from a motor vehicle accident. When cooks office heard this the person on the phone got very "wiggy" placing me on hold wanted to know if this was 3rd party payment etc.. ALL ABOUT THE MONEY! Once it was clear our insurance would cover the exam and I pointed out we really didn't know what was going on they brought her in. Once there they dilated her eyes, performed an exam and said we think you have a cataract (51 yr old woman) then turned her loose to drive with dilated eyes.. Our O.D. In a letter had requested she be tested for OCT and referred to a Retina Specialist. Dr. Cooks office told me "Our servers are down we had to order new computers and none of the information is on paper" so when I pushed for a referral immediately they knew all about my wife and results of her exam? Needless to say we're getting a second opinion, they refused to refer her, they were argumentative and when I pointed out our O.D. Has mapped my wife's eyes and examined them for over 5yrs but in the opinion of Dr. Cooks office our OD's opinion doesn't matter. I urge to to look elsewhere for care.. read more

Went to Dr. Cook because my right eye had pain around the outside socket and when I touched the eyeball, as well as scratchiness when I blinked -- it felt like sandpaper. The doctor did a brief examination and said he could find nothing wrong. He thought it was probably dry eye. He recommended eye lubricating drops. The next morning, the condition had worsened, with the scratchiness feeling worse, a film had developed over my eye and it had become very sensitive to light. I went to another eye doctor who, after a more thorough examination, diagnosed iritis, which is not uncommon and is treatable with two different kinds of prescription drops. The drops began providing some relief within a few hours. Would not recommend Dr. Cook, since he did not see this during his examination. read more

Dr Cook is rude, obnoxious and dramatic. I have never been treated so badly by a doctor. I went to Dr Cook for a 2nd opinion for Dr Treger in the same office. Dr Cook does not listen to what your problem is. He did not understand the problem, and ridiculed Dr Treger for seeking a 2nd opinion. His diagnosis for for the lump in my eye, which 2 other doctors agree is there, was a cream for dry skin from the itching. I told him my eye was never itchy in the 2 weeks of the problem leading up to this visit. He started loudly ridiculing me and telling me I should never talk to a doctor like that. He opened the door and dramatically went on and on that I should never talk to a doctor like that. He made a huge spectacle of himself to the people sitting in the waiting area outside. I will never go back to him. I went to another doctor they found the lump easily. read more

In 2004 I was declared legally blind in both eyes by an opthalmologist in Coronado and lost my drivers license. I was recomended by a friend to go and see Dr. Cook. First he did a lense implant in one eye and a few months later the other eye. I now still have perfect vision long sighted in one eye and short sighted in the other, just like I had many, many years ago. I will never ever be able to thank him enough. read more

La Mesa office: Dr. Cook performed laser surgery on my left eye two days ago. My bottom line needs repeating at the top: I can hardly wait to have the other eye done! Dr. Cook is phenomenal and his staff are terrific. I chose a monocular lens implant to improve my distance vision. I was experiencing double vision in one eye and triple vision in the other. 48 hours post-surgery, I want a patch over my non-op eye so I can see everything clearly. I never expected this much improvement. I'm over-the-moon happy with the entire process; Dr. Cook's expertise, the office atmosphere, the front office staff, technicians and surgical team. Dr. Cook is one of the best doctors around. Professional, knowledgeable and very respectable. I appreciate his kindness and thorough eye exams. A couple years ago I felt his office wasn't anywhere near as good, from payment issues to how they handle situations and poor communication with me. A lot has changed and my appointment a couple weeks ago was my best all around, and the office staff was also great. If you're looking for a new eye doctor choose Dr. Cook- he is worth it. read more

My husband had a cataract lens replacement with Dr. Cook last month. Though his clinical expertise is excellent, his skills at relating with us were lacking. I am an RN. At the initial office visit, Dr. Cook made a negative comment about Medicare. Seeing that much of his income is derived from Medicare, I found this to be a bit hypocritical. On the day of my husband's surgery, I was with him from the time of pre-surgery admission until he went to the OR. I then, as instructed by the nursing staff, waited in the lobby (which at this facility is the only waiting area availble for family members who are having surgery). Dr. Cook was to come to the lobby at the completion of the procedure to let me know how it went. That never occured. No one else made any contact with me until my husband was being wheeled out the front door for discharge. I find that inexcusable and non-professional. We saw Dr. Cook for my husband's follow-up visit the next day and no apology was offered. Dr. Cook's usual schedule is to do multiple cataract len replacements back-to-back (as many as 5 were done the morning of my husband's procedure and we were told that this was a "light day"). I was left with the impression that we were simply cattle moving thru the process. My husband has to have the lens replaced in his other eye and we have made an appt. with another ophthalmologist for that. read more
