I had no idea that I had strong family ties in the gorgeous Glendalough Valley. But, based on the way I was treated from the moment I walked in the door of this classic but modernized hotel, I felt like I was staying with family.
From Jean at the front desk who chatted away with me and explained that I was the first guest they'd checked in since closing down over the winter, to the housekeeper who saw me coming in from my trek who told me I'd better check with the desk because they wanted to upgrade me, to Edel of the cool hair who figured out a way to get me a bottle of water for my hiking when there was none to be found in the nearby shop, it was just like spending time with long lost cousins.
And the service levels are the best I've had in Ireland. They should get a sixth star just for being pro-active and realizing that the 21st birthday celebration in the downstairs event area would probably be going all night. They offered to switch rooms for me LONG before the party even started. They also get huge points for offering to bring my breakfast to my room on the last morning, as I was the only guest scheduled to be in and the dining room would be awefully quiet. What? Full Irish in my Jammies? Bring it on!!!
And the room....the shower was orgasmically well pressurized, there was plenty of space in the bathroom, and the tub was perfect. The towel warmer was excellent, the heaters in the room were set to the right levels, and the sound of the creek outside flowed into the room at night but modern window panes kept the roaring wind out. If there was one thing I'd add, it would be more TV channels to the few that were available, but maybe I really should watch more RTE1 any way.
I ate in every one of their options: the restaurant, the pub, and the grill. Pretty much the same menues, but I have to say I prefer the pub. There were plenty of locals there each day, a roaring fire, and they served a gorgeous pint of Guinness. Food was above Irish standard, and the selection was broad enough to satisfy most cravings.
Bottom Line: I've invited them all over for Christmas...I think they're coming to meet the rest of their American cousins! read more
