Listen, this is not some fancy gym, but if your concerns are working out, shooting hoops or swimming this is an excellent rec center location. The staff is super friendly, the facility is clean and a good variety of weights and machines. So I am scratching my head on the low reviews. First off, the staff are kind and helpful. I can't imagine what some of these reviewers were expecting. Second, the gym is actually better equipped than the City Park Gym which all it has going for it is its size. Third, the pool is well-maintained and never crowded. I can imagine that there are better activity classes for children at the bigger gyms. If you need a fancier changing room then I wonder why you are in a rec center. The bottom line is, if you are an adult, want to get in and get and get out, it's a great gym and the staff is super nice. read more

Located in the heart of Five Point is another of my Favorite Gyms in the Denver Parks and Recreation stable. This gym has the standard pool, gym and weight room setup. Not the nicest in the Denver Parks and Rec centers but good enough to get the job done. Scooter runs the place and is a great guy with a big heart. Miss Zion does the Rec kid programs and makes sure kids enrolled get their homework done and gets from school with many more activities. Every year Camby kids would take kids from here on a shopping spree to Cherry Creek mal a unique and enriching opportunity for kids to buy presents for their family, Nuggets ruined it by sending Camby packing! Audrey runs a great volley ball program and every year has very competitive teams! They offer a variety of programs and once again this is a local gym that you can attend for a fraction of the cost of a the corporate national chains. There is a board located on the way to the kitchen that shows articles of athletes that came through there, and someday my little girls article might be up this board as well because this is where she started playing basketball. Just went here for the first time on Monday. There is not much for parking, even on the street. The building, while old, has been maintained well and is nice enough on the inside. The people working were also friendly and helpful. That said, while we were setting my dad up in the system as he had been visiting for thanksgiving, a lady jabbed her arm up between us sort of aggressively to scan her ID. No 'excuse me' or anything. I looked back and was sort of startled. She was a homeless person with some sort of disease mask on her face and a large garbage bag with her. She glared at me and said "dont worry, its just HIV...." While HIV is of course not transmitted via air, it was sort of scary and passive agressive. While I do have compassion for people who have fallen on hard times and regularly donate to good will, it doesnt change the fact that alot of the homeless population are mentally ill and often times violent. If you are going to allow people to use the locker room as their own personal bathroom, then I would ask that you please install metal detectors. Had that woman become agitated/violent in the locker room, she could have pulled out anything from her giant garbage bag, knife, gun etc, and I would have been defenseless in a very small room. It was troubling and uncomfortable. I likely wont be returning to this location again. read more

I just signed up for a membership here recently. They have really affordable prices in terms of membership options, and there are also a variety of options. You can purchase different levels of membership that allow you to go to various recreation centers for free or for a small price. The facilities here are ok. It is a no frills gym! Nothing fancy, but it is fairly clean and I haven't seen it terribly crowded which is nice. Some of the workout areas are rather small which is sometimes difficult to navigate, but I don't mind it. They have lots of different equipment to choose from. I like doing HIIT workouts and I can move the equipment around that I need to use (weights, benches, medicine balls, etc). There are also cardio machines to work out on - elliptical, stationary bikes, and treadmills. Television to watch in front of these as well! I wish they played the music a little louder, but it's ok because I just use my own music then. The locker rooms are clean and tidy. There are lockers that you'll need to bring your own lock for. I haven't tested out the showers yet, but I see people using them so they should be good! I really like having this option for a gym because it is right on my drive home from work, and exactly what I'm looking for right now. Dear Denver, I realize your gyms are tax-payer funded and will thus not present in as good a condition as private gyms, especially in poorer areas, but come on. 1980's gym equipment, pool hours 1 hour every other day, kids running wild? Not fun. I will gladly fork over an extra $5 a month so you can make these improvements as the cost would still be miles better than other gyms. Washington Park should not be the only city gym with decent equipment and hours. How about a little social equity here? read more

Walking in you get the feeling the staff is upset you ruined their day by using their rec center. The pool is run by a gang of chubby teenagers who take random unposted breaks. So even though the pool is theoretically open, if you time it right, you will spend a good part of your time sitting on a bench with a closed pool watching them snapchat boys on their phones. Watch Wolf Of Wall Street and study the scene where Leo propels his body using his mouth. You are gonna need that skill to get yourself out of the pool if you suffer a stroke or serious injury. The lifeguards ain't got no time for that. Next week I am going to visit the pool in the last scene of Let The Right One In. I know I will be eventually beheaded by a vampire, but that experience will still top my time here. read more

Glenarm is a best kept secret recreation center for central Denverites. While it doesn't quite have the well-stocked weight room that 20th Street has, it has a full size pool and better hours than it's downtown neighbor. Plus it's not nearly as crowded and in my opinion has a location that is easier to get to then the crazy traffic and one-way streets downtown (I bike to the gym.) I do wish the weight room had a bit more to offer, but the staff is always friendly and it has everything I need for a good work out. read more

The only thing I like about Glenarm Rec is the Olympic size pool for lap swimming. The showers are like my old Junior High school, they open at 10 am most days so that isn't convenient for my schedule, instructors call in to cancel classes and you aren't made aware of it until you get there. This center used any and every excuse to close early. Plus the staff isn't very friendly. I always feel like I'm putting them out even if I simply smile and say good morning. I've tried to like this center but I will not go back ever. Today was the last straw for me. read more

This is the third rec center I've visited since I've started swimming laps in the morning, and I'm pleased to say that it's my favorite! It might as well be called the Five Points Rec Center, because that's where it is. And it's small, but it's the coziest and cheeriest looking one I've been to so far. (My other experiences were at the 20th St and the Hiawatha Davis rec centers.) There are only about four lanes for swimming, so I can imagine it getting crowded, but I was there at 7 AM on a Thursday, and was the only one there for the 40 minutes I swam. The gym equipment was similarly sparse, but there were only two people using it, so it looked like it wasn't a problem. This may be my new permanent gym. read more

The Glenarm Rec Center's swimming staff headed by Audra is AWESOME. I really can't say enough good things about them. Super friendly and competent. My 4-year old daughter was very resistant to learning how to swim and when she first started lessons, was crying by the edge of the pool refusing to get in. Getting her face wet was a huge deal. After several months of lessons with Amiya and now Lexi, she is confident in the water and can swim short distances on her own. My 7-year old son, with the help of Amiya and Cory, just yesterday dove into the deep end and swam the length of the pool. As someone who never learned how to dive, I couldn't have more proud and thankful to the staff. He loves swimming now, refuses to miss any classes and is talking about joining the swim team! Some previous posts from several years ago mentioned that the swim classes were not directed. The classes now are all directed, with clear purposes and goals set up for each of the students to meet before they can go to the next level. The only drawback is that the classes do fill up fast so you need to sign up early on the first day and *in person*. I've been told they are moving to a new online registration system soon which will make this even better. read more

The place is OK. It's never been so crowded that I feel uncomfortable, but it does have many limitations. The most obvious is the whack hours. What business has hours like this? Especially a facility whose purpose is to improve the health and wellness of the community. Being closed completely on Sunday, very limited hours on Saturday, and not opening until 10:00 three other days a week is silly. Just open at 6:00 and this could easily be a three or four star facility. There also seems to always be a machine or two out of order. So maintenance is definitely an issue. I am, however, a glutton for punishment so I continue to be a member because they are the closest gym to my house. read more

We signed up for a child swimming class here because the classes were cheaper here than we could find anywhere else. We got what we paid for. The staff would keep the pool doors locked until 5:30, so classes would invariably start after the 5:30 start time. They would begin ushering everyone out of the pool before the 6:00 pm end time. The tot swimming class was not directed, so we were left to play with our baby in the pool on our own while the instructor casually checked in with each family in the pool at her leisure. There were times when the instructor was not in the pool and not paying attention to us. It was unclear which of the staff in the pool area were certified lifeguards. The staff struck us as inattentive and clock-watching, though friendly with the kids. We will look elsewhere for classes from now on. read more

Two staff members are very unhelpful and unfriendly. I had a bad experience with one so called life gaurd who was letting her boyfriend just sit in while I swam on my own. I felt very uncomfortable and decided to leave, the evening manager was very rude to me and demanded to know why I was leaving and made me feel like I was in the wrong. This was in January and I have not been back though I paid for a years membership! read more

I love this place! Have been coming here for 3 years and it's just what I need. Nothing fancy but it has an indoor pool for laps, a pretty good weight room, a cardio room, and a machine room. For about $20/mo it's hard to justify switching to another gym. PS ladies, there is a free pilates class every Tues. night. PPS The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. read more

This is definitely a smaller recreation center. The weight room is okay, but really crowded every time I've been there (around 3-5 in the afternoon). The last time I went, the showers were closed, the gym floor was torn up, the locker room smelled, and the cardio room was going to be shut for a few days because of new equipment. Also, they don't open until 10 am Monday, Wednesday, Friday. On the plus side, I can usually find free parking outside, the equipment is fine, and the price is definitely right. read more
