Mountainside Medical Center - Urine sample that sat on a hallway table for HOURS

Overall excellent experience. Went to the emergency room for pain in my lower right abdomen turned…read moreout to be appendices. I had to have an appendectomy. All went well I was out in one day. I recommend to all patients who go to ANY hospital, you must ask questions. It will make your visit more comprehensible to you and your family. Know what meds you're getting, ask why is it being given, and ask about whatever you're diagnosed with. All questions are valid and help you and your team of doctors get the best care that's right for you. You have the right to refuse meds if you don't want them. It's all in your patient's bill of rights you sign upon arrival. The one thing that could have been improved on, was the communication of staff within themselves. I am lucky I'm not afraid to ask questions or question things. You must! it's your body and you should know what's being administered and why. Overall, this hospital was great. Dr's bedside manners were friendly and knowledgeable. The nurses were informative. I have to say I had a good experience considering I had to have surgery. I would definitely recomend this hospital!

The ER experience was one of the worst I've ever had. Registration didn't even happen until 3 hours after we arrived, well into the visit. My son provided a urine sample that sat on a table the entire time and was never tested. While one nurse was a tad bit decent, the rest of the staff showed a shocking lack of professionalism and basic respect. Staff members (including security) were standing in the hallway laughing, having personal conversations, and at one point I heard someone ask a coworker, "Are you ready for your next victim?"--completely inappropriate in a medical setting. The cleanliness was unacceptable. I noticed red spots on the floor and brought it to a staff member's attention, concerned it was blood. I was told, "That's not blood, that's pizza sauce," and they walked away without addressing it. The bathrooms were in terrible condition! We saw urine on the floor, backed-up toilets, and even spider webs in the corners. The place smelled like old urine! There were patients in the hallway in beds because I guess they ran out of rooms? No privacy whatsoever!! It also felt like care was delayed due to a shift change--we were left waiting until the next staff came in rather than being properly attended to. Overall, the level of care was extremely poor, and my son's issue was never fully addressed. The most alarming part came after we left: I realized in addition to my sons discharge papers, I had been given another patient's discharge paperwork, including highly sensitive information like EKG and chest X-ray results, bloodwork, address, phone number, date of birth, medications, reason for his visit and medical history. I contacted risk management three times and never received a response. This experience was unacceptable from start to finish. I would not return here under any circumstances. Please, if you have a choice, go somewhere else.

The check in process was the absolute WORST! Their computers were down, however, that wasn't the issue, the issue was how the front desk reception team handled it and that was absolutely terrible! Rude, impatient and condescending. Then when they finally came around to getting a bit of order back, they handed me the wrong ID back and said someone would call me back shortly ... SIGH! I was there for a severely sprained ankle and instead of saying someone would wheel me back in a wheelchair, they saw me limping, asked if I needed one, and let me decide on what needed to happen. Once I was in the back I must say that it was a complete 180. The Physician Assistant, Nurses, Radiologist, Support Staff ... everyone was AMAZING! And I felt well taken care of and left confident in my "diagnosis" and follow-up care orders. This is an absolutely torn review because of the first impression ... because let's be real, that's the lasting impression. So, given this, 3 stars is all I can give overall .... If the front does better they'll quickly get to 4-5 stars overall.

No one came to talk to us no dr or nurse etc about how surgery went nothing. I'm very upset about that. Had to beg for pain medicine. Also the staff or people in area of the room is noisy. Each time she fell asleep she was awoken with noise that was preventable. When you're in pain you're trying to sleep through it hard to do. I'm disappointed overall as a mom you want the best care for your child and not hearing from a doctor is frustrating. Plus the rooms are weird. The setup is not even one part of the room is bigger than the other. One side of the room is extremely small I could barely fit with a chair I was uncomfortable as well. The whole experience was not good in my opinion. Compared to my own recent hospital stay it was night and day.

I'm surprised by the low rating for this hospital but then again, I can only speak for the ICU. Every doctor and nurse (ok, almost every nurse) were amazing in their attentiveness in caring for my father. No request we had was too great. No questions were a bother. Everyone was extremely helpful and took the time to explain and go over everything that was happening, about to happen or might happen. I just want to shout-out the angels (aka: nurses) of the ICU, especially Jon, Olivia, Barbara and Sean. The ICU waiting room was definitely a second home for the three weeks of nearly daily visits that I made here. Patient Services is located inside the waiting room and they definitely put up with dozens of family members sitting around for hours with Dunkin' Donuts Box of Joe's and loud Polish voices talking and laughing at all hours. Patient Services hooked us up with playing cards, stress balls, blankets and allowed us to use a reclining chair in the room so we could take turns napping. Best of all, they put my family on a list for parking so that we wouldn't have to pay the daily fees. That made visiting a bit less stressful to maintain for three weeks of constant visitations. I wish I wasn't there at all and that I didn't meet all the amazing people that work here, but I did. And for that I can't give them anything short of 5 stars. (Kind of morbid to be reviewing the ICU on yelp, I realize that. No one ever ends up here by choice.)

I originally wrote this review before the 2024 Memorial Day holiday weekend. I rated the facility a…read more"2" then, but more recent experience on May 28, 2024 requires I lower the rating to "1"! You should read the review, but what caused today's revision was learning the MRI report I was informed had been sent the ordering physician on Friday 5/24/24 was not the whole story. A fax was sent Friday, but it was not the actual report. The incompetent party who sent Friday's fax sent a questionnaire connected to my MRI report, but not the actual report. So, it took multiple phone calls on 5/28/24 and tons of frustrating wasted time on 5/28/24 to finally get it done. So? I had used both the hospital and their ambulatory care center a few times previously. Both are in Livingston, NJ. This review regards an MRI that was performed on May 20, 2024. The procedure itself was unremarkable. I did not wait long for an 8AM appointment, which is one of the pluses. The staff were also pleasant and professional. So, why only a 2 out of 5? Everything that followed has been nightmarish and totally unacceptable. It seems since Robert Woods Johnson took over, this place has gone to hell. The followup post-MRI has demonstrated a dysfunctional, disorganized, and non-empathetic group of medical practitioners. What I think of them is unprintable. It's now Friday May 24, 2024 and for three days both I and the ordering physician's office have been calling to get the MRI results sent to the ordering physician. We keep being told the results are not ready and can take 5-7 business days. Huh? I've had MRIs before and results should be available within 24-48 hours. This 5-7 business days is an inexcusable travesty. There's worse though! Worse is there's no one to talk to about why the MRI results should be expedited. This lack of a report is delaying another procedure. And I'm suffering physically due to this facility's lack of efficiency and lack of caring. Every call I seek a patient advocate, but there's no such person. I am told to speak with Ed Figueroa, the radiology department head. That would be great, if he'd answer his phone or return his calls, if the alternate phone number on his voice mail was an actual existing phone number. Unbelievable? It sure is. Uncaring and unsympathetic. No patient advocates? Unheard of. I also tried the ambulatory care center's concierge desk. Donna, a pleasant sounding woman tried to help me. That ultimately went nowhere though. I called her again 2 hours later. Again she's pleasant, but ultimately of no help. Call backs thereafter and she will not pick up the call. Now she's dodging my calls. This is an abomination. This place is to be avoided. If I had real convenient alternative choices, I'd make them. For now, I'm stuck with these folks.

Our baby was delivered at this hospital recently, and it was a great experience…read more I won't say it was a smooth one, but the staff and resident doctors are there to help you to the best of their capabilities. Even though we had our designated OB Doctors assigned for delivery, resident doctors are equally helpful and skilled (especially Dr Gabriela Portilla-Maldonado). My wife was admitted and discharged in 67 hours. It was planned induced labor, and we were asked to get admitted around 830 PM EST, but even they made us wait for 90 minutes (the room was getting cleaned) Labor was induced around 1 AM by Dr Gabriela Portilla-Maldonado, and it was a painful but, I guess, memorable experience for both of us We were helped by many nurses through delivery, then Postpartum room, and except a couple of them ( I guess they are still learning), everyone was so good, especially Jean during delivery. Post delivery, it was Shruti, and Ava, Rebecca, and Jeany during Postpartum. I have nominated them through their Daisy program. postpartum time: Room was big, facility was top notch, some lady also came to take our feedback regarding cleaners, and food. Food: Their inhouse cafeteria is good too. though husband was not covered and they need to pay seperatley, but wife had no issue in their food. You can order through their Menu, The only issue was that they close by 730 PM. Some not so good experience was also there- some newbies nurses were not skilled enough to channel the injection for IV fluids and if they cant get success in first attempt, they should have been called their experienced one to take the charge. so there we had bad experience. but overall, facilities, doctors, security, process- everything was top notch. Also, it was expensive. My wife was admitted here once in emergency (pregnancy phase), it was just for 3-4 hours, and we got a bill for $7316, and even after insurance, we had to pay $2263. Parking: It's $7/day. Once paid, it's good for the whole day

REVIEW OF ER ONLY:…read more Going to the Emergency Room is scary. Earlier this month, I had to go to the ER for sudden and increasing pain. Fortunately, I received quality acute care and was taken care of well during my visit. It had been almost ten years since I've walked foot in this hospital, formerly Saint Barnabas, now branded Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center. I got to see the new wing/facilities when I was wheeled around to get an ultrasound. It's all new and impressive looking. I was joking with my transport professional about how I remembered that there used to be a McDonalds at the hospital. The intake process was smooth. It's a stressful situation, but they were great at the intake counter and security was friendly also. Every time a medical professional interacted with me, they gave their name and were clear with what was about to happen. I felt safe and heard as a patient.
