trail map from Waukesha to Cottage Grove
    Barry L.

For the weekend exerciser, the daily runner, long distance bike trip or once in a while "let's go for a bike ride", then check out the Glacial Drumlin Trail. This 53 mile long state trail is a wonderful trail to ride, run, rollerblade or various winter activities as this trail is accessible year-round begins in Waukesha and ends in Cottage Grove just east of Madison. An easy bike trail as most of it is paved. Many wildlife, creeks or nearby lakes, and camping along the way. Pass through many little towns or villages with restaurants and coffee shops not far off the trail. The trail has a slight pitch (3 degrees I believe) and has many parking/starting points, bathrooms along the way and bubblers/water fountains between Waukesha and Delafield section. There are many wooden bridges over wetlands along the way which are great places to rest and view the glacial work and wildlife. Since it is a state trail you must pay a fee to use. Annual or day passes available and there are many stations to self-pay. A State Trail Pass ($25 annually/$5 daily) is required for bicyclists and in-line skaters ages 16 and older. The eastern half of the trail begins in the Fox River Sanctuary at College and Prairie Avenues in Waukesha and goes to County Highway Y, three miles northeast of Jefferson. Parking is available in Waukesha, Wales, Dousman, Sullivan and Helenville. The western half of the trail begins at County Highway N in Cottage Grove and travels to Junction Road east of State Highway 26 north of Jefferson. Parking is available in Cottage Grove, Deerfield, London and Lake Mills. From the starting point in Waukesha, the trail is heavily used and many people on the trail. It is not lighted and beyond Waukesha city limits it can be a mile or more before your next cross-road. So when riding, be prepared with spare and other supplies. If running or walking, you know the drill, just be aware of your surroundings. There has been many coyotes especially in the morning hours or late evenings.

    The trail near Lake Mills.

This time I came to test out the full expanse of the water with my paddle board. I came with my brother who had his kayak and fished. He caught a rainbow trout (and released). We stayed on the water for almost 4 hours - the water was nice and clean and it was busy but not crazy. The beach area was definitely a popular busy zone but most the people were in the designated swimming area versus the open lake. Just a great time and will be back! If looking to grab a spot on the dry land I would recommend arriving before 11am- that's when it started filling up more.

Fox Brook has a swimming pond area, a pavilion for the beer garden and a rentable pavilion at Picnic Area 1. I rented out the pavilion for 30+ guests and it has plenty of space, can hold Up to 200. It also has a volleyball net and a cut little loop on the prairie. Lots of migrating birds in the spring! The reservation comes with a fee of course which you can reserve online. There is a $7 fee to enter the park as well and can also be done online. There's a paved trail that loops the swimmable Pond shared with bikers. It's a peaceful place to walk your dog, or by yourself or with friends/family/significant other. There is also a few offshoot unpaved trails that cuts into the trees for a short while to walk along the trees. Pretty decent if you're looking to take a quick walk and enjoy nature or have a meetup and enjoy some beer at the beer garden.

I was looking to take my kiddo out before we headed into Sam's Club, and this park was nearby and seemed like a good stop. It was indeed! The playground is an all for one design, with no separate little kids side or big kids side, which is just fine. Variety is the key with this setup. For slides, there is one big enclosed twirl slide (my two year old loved this one), one three person slide, and a two person slide. For climbing into the playground, you can walk up the back of a crocodile, tackle the climbing wall, or take the variety of ladders, including one that goes into the middle of the roost. As well, there are two swings. One for toddlers, one for big kids. It's nothing crazy, it's not brand new, but it is well designed and maintained. Trees line the playground and basketball court, so there is plenty of shade. Parking is just on the street, no parking lot here. As well, the bathrooms are on the opposite end of the park from the playground, instead of centrally located. Other than that, the park is great for your traditional neighborhood park. We'll be back for sure.

This place used to be landfill a long time ago and they filled the place up and now it's a park. As a little boy I used to come here a lot. It's a nice and quite little park. There's just a few swings and some sand to play in and of course, there is that kiddy pool for the summer. I probably pee'd in it, haha... Next to the soda machine used to be a pay phone, you know? The one that you put in one finger at a time and turned it in a circular motion. Ah, rotary phones were cool, not! Soda in that machine was 25 cents and they had a machine inside the building that made a cup of chicken broth soup, hot coco or, coffee. Yes, no Starbucks back then. In the summer you can expect to see men dressed up in uniforms playing baseball. You can also play tennis. They have two courts here. Hopefully the nets are new. The most fun is probably during the winter months when snow is on the hill. Take a sled, grease it down with left over lard from Christmas dinner and your in for a joy of a life time. As I said, the park is small, but it's cozy. Just because something is big, does not make it better. [Review #173]
