We spent Memorial weekend 2026 camping at Lake Kegonsa State Park…read more It was a bit of a mixed bag for us. The good: +The Campground is wooded, which is our favorite type of campground +They have showers +The bathroom with the showers was kept impeccably clean +You are in pretty close proximity to shopping (15 minutes or so) so if you find you forgot something, you don't have far to go The less than ideal: +Our fire ring was in rough shape with a big hole in the grate over the fire which made it difficult when making pudgie pies +The women's pit bathroom near our campsite had a burnt out light which I discovered after dark when I needed to go. It was the last time I used that bathroom and instead walked or drove up to the flushing bathrooms near the entrance +The lake itself was full of algae and kinda stinky in spots. Not a great place to swim or really enjoy the water in any way. +Due in part (I'm sure) to the stagnant water nearby, the mosquitos were plentiful All in all, I wouldn't likely camp here again but enjoyed sleeping in the woods none-the-less!

Arrived before 6 pm on Friday. Office was closed, and the campground host was nowhere to be found,…read moreso there was no way to purchase firewood. (Even a nearby private place selling firewood was out.). When we arrived at our campsite, there was someone parked in it, and we had to shoo them out. The next day we had a lot of scheduled activities, so we were away from the site in our camper van most of the day. To show we were occupying the site, I put up my Happy Campers sign and left my big water jug on the picnic table. When we returned that evening, my sign had been stolen, the water jug emptied and tossed on the ground, and there was another squatter in the site. That's the first time in many years of camping that I've had something stolen from a campsite. Parks needs more patrols and a campground host who is actually on site.

We'd never been but decided to give it a try. We had heard it was a brook trout habitat so my husband brought his fishing gear. There may be some spots to fish but I think you'd have to veer farther off the main trails than we did, so we didn't actually get in any fishing. But, since that was an afterthought, no matter! Did I dip my toes in a clear stream? I did. There's one main trail and several others that branch off from the main trail. We were able to wander a bit, dip our toes in a spot where the spring is coming straight out of the rocks, see what looks like boiling sand (spring water bubbling out of the sand), and wander through the rocky stream with our pants rolled up trying to get a pic of a water snake eating a fish like we were kids. It's a beautiful area for a hike and can't recommend the toe dipping enough. Get to it!

But unlike those color coded trails, there's more to see along this 1.2 mile trail. Some of the springs are just mesmerizing. Seeing water bubble up from underwater sands is almost hypnotic. Other springs flow out of the ground and hillsides. Although shorter than even the shortest of the neighboring trails, definitely plan on spending an hour here, you'll be stopping often to take in the many features along the trail.
