If you just need a little bit of a woods and nature fix without heading out to the hinterlands, this little park might fit the bill. There's a nice wide dirt trail that's about a mile long that meanders through quiet, secluded park land with tall trees and underbrush. There's a little church back there, and a mysterious little open brick structure that has a working electric light set into the wall for no apparent reason. There's a weed filled cement cistern type thing that may or may not contain lost souls. There's a cemetery there too, some of the graves very old, and most of the names very familiar north east side Madison ones. There's not a lot of plant diversity in the woods yet, but it's an ongoing project to restore native species. When you step back out into the light, you'll see a beautiful fountain and a panoramic view of the capitol skyline across lake Mendota. It'll be great if we manage to go there sometime when wildlife is out and about; today all we heard was the wind along with some quiet turkey sounds, but if that's what they were, they definitely stayed hidden from view. read more
