The absolute best. Dr. Giuliano and his team were wonderful. From the first call, his dedicated team answers the phone: no call center, no interminable hold, they got me right in, and were very compassionate with every question I had. The medical fellow, Dr. Fleshner, and nurses were wonderful. Everything was explained with care and compassion, and the fellow and nurses were immediately responsive with messaging or calling, taking time with detailed answers to every single question. Every time I left Dr. Giuliano's office I felt better and reassured. He has wisdom and speaks with compassion (unlike the top UCLA surgeon I saw who was brash, dismissive, and completely wrong about a more rare part of my medical care). Dr. Giuliano is world-renowned and invented the sentinel node removal, sparing women from the unnecessary and painful removal of multiple lymph nodes that used to be commonplace and resulted in lifelong lymphedema. He's known for meticulously getting clean margins, whereas other patients I know with other surgeons had to return for an additional surgery because the first wasn't successful. He's a lifesaver and a lovely human. It was a privilege to be in his care. Also, to respond to another reviewer: the best cancer centers are teaching hospitals, and you almost always see a medical fellow first, that's just standard practice, not annoyance. The fellow is also an amazing resource. And--you're waiting for the best care, you understand why there's a wait when the doctor treats you with undivided attention. AVOID Dr. Giuliano -- Unprofessional, mocking, and dismissive care. I had an extremely upsetting and unprofessional experience with Dr. Armando Giuliano and his NP, Sherry Goldman, at Cedars-Sinai Breast Health Center this past summer. I came in as a 27-year-old woman with a breast lump that had suddenly tripled in size in just a few days, which was very painful and frightening. After a biopsy confirmed it was benign, I was referred to Dr. Giuliano to discuss removal. I expected compassion and guidance. Instead, I was met with dismissiveness, sarcasm, and outright cruelty. After waiting alone in the exam room for over an hour, Sherry Goldman came in and immediately got basic details of my medical history wrong, making it clear she had not even reviewed my chart or medical history. She told me I had "cystic breast disease" and that nothing could be done, dismissing my concerns without showing me any evidence. When I explained this was my only cyst and it had rapidly grown and become painful, she brushed me off, said I have more cysts in my ultrasounds, and did not show me any evidence or images to support what she was saying. Dr. Giuliano joined her later, and the two of them proceeded to speak to me in a belittling, condescending way. When I explained the sudden growth of my lump, Dr. Giuliano smirked and sarcastically said, "I've never seen a lump get that big... if it happens again, come see me, because I'd love to see that." He made it clear that he didn't believe me, didn't know where my lump was even located, and had not reviewed my ultrasound or history. I pointed out the bruise mark that I have had on my breast for 3 years since I first discovered this lump, Dr Guilliano said "that mark is unrelated." I pointed out that the mark is right on the lump and I've had that mark for 3 years, and he just smirked at me and did not even respond because he did not believe me, yet he offered no other explanation for the mark. I was truly shocked at my experience and symptoms being so dismissed. I felt that no matter what I said to him, he would not believe it or address my concerns. When I asked what the next steps would be, he said I have to just keep coming to them to get the lump drained each time it grows in the future. When I said that this would be a financial hardship as my insurance makes me pay over $2000 out of pocket to get the lump drained, he just blankly looked at me and shrugged - clearly not a concern to him. I don't believe that is the only solution, maybe the most profitable for the doctor but not in the best interest for me. When I started crying due to the overwhelming emotion and distress of being dismissed and not believed, being told I had a cystic breast disease, and being told I had no options other than to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket every time the lump re-fills, both practitioners turned to each other and literally laughed at me. The nurse practitioner Sherry Goldman said to Dr Guilliano "look, she is crying over having a cyst! haha." And Dr Guilliano laughed and said "I hope I get to see a patient with cancer next who actually has something to cry about." I think a doctor saying that to a patient is absolutely inexcusable. They left two minutes later as I was still crying, and as the door closed behind them, I heard the nurse practitioner laugh and say again to the doctor "she was crying over a cyst" and the doctor laughed. I heard them laughing as they walked away. I left the appointment with no plan, no compassion, and a $2,000 bill for care that was dismissive and harmful. I was made to feel like my pain and symptoms didn't matter and that I wasn't taken seriously simply because my condition wasn't "serious enough" for them. Patients deserve to be believed, respected, and treated with basic humanity -- none of which I received here. I hope no other patient has to go through what I experienced with Dr. Giuliano and his team. I would highly recommend you do not see Dr. Giuliano. read more

Called to request a second opinion outside my own network. It just felt like a mess from beginning to end. They didn't request and get my MRI.. even though the assistant called me before and said he would all me if they were missing something. Apparently they want a CD of the MRI.. but my network is more modern and all digital. They offered to fax it but their place doesn't even do that! He had an assistant in our appointment..I felt like maybe they were there to help him remember stuff? He gave us no goof advice and had bad bedside manner...clearly I was crying. After 2 months, they finally managed to get the MRI and he called me back with very little guidance. The team kept forgetting we were only doing a second opinion, not signing up for care there.. then to top it all off we got a second bill!! I called and called.. we already paid when we arrived that day. Apparently this is for radiology who we did not request to view it. We were specifically asking for his opinion, not someone we don't know. It was not made clear at any point that they were sending my stuff off and we would pay. The "welcome " email letter in thr app had a tiny line way down ( it's terrible viewing...the font goes sideways) that you may be charged for someone else to view results "May" is not "will ". That is not a legal binding document. We didn't sign anything stating we are ok with the additional bill. I called and called. Doctor never responded, his secretary basically said too bad not our office...that's radiology..call them. No! You sent it! You didn't tell us during the second opinion visit! I regret every moment of this. Got no guidance. Should have just stayed in my nice ST joseph network. 2 months waisted waiting while my tumor grew. No urgency on their end...I definitely don't think they actually cared. He certainly didn't. He got my money for 5 minutes of talking.. read more

Disgusting. On another review site someone wrote that Giuliano didn't recommend a mastectomy in her case because she had "nice young breasts" and he didn't understand why she wanted to "ruin" them. I definitely believe he said this to a patient considering he had his hand on my leg (at one point he started rubbing it) throughout my consultation. He also deliberately poked my nipple with his finger when he did not at all need to. All of this happened in front of his young female fellows who acted desperate for his approval and said absolutely nothing about his behavior, which I'm sure for him was part of the thrill of doing it. At first I didn't want to leave a review because I was in the middle of finding a surgeon and I irrationally feared retaliation (which is the reaction to abuse that abusers generally rely on), but I snapped out of it after reading what that other patient wrote. He also said a bunch of other offensive shit about my past treatment as a breast cancer patient that I won't go into because although it was immensely tacky, and perhaps more personally traumatic than the inappropriate sexual behavior, the latter is what needs to be highlighted here. read more

This doctor is the worst!! My appointment was at 9:45 am, and I was not seen until after 11:45 am. That's right -- 2 hours of waiting when I was the second appointment of the day. Then, I get in to the room, and instead of coming into see me himself, he sends his first year resident (who was the one who performed the exam)!! When I asked where the eff the doctor was, she says, "oh let me see if I can grab him." WHAT?! So finally Dr. Giuliano comes in. He does not introduce himself, but instead just starts to undress me to examine my breast. He doesn't apologize, nothing. When I raised the fact that I had to get in to work and I had been waiting awhile, he said, "well you could come back another day." He was so incredibly dismissive and rude, and said something along the lines of that he didn't understand why I was even there (because I'm so young). When I told him I was referred by my gynecologist because I had masses in my breast, he was like, "oh you need an ultrasound because you could have a tumor." Finally, I go have my ultrasound, and then come back upstairs and he doesn't even come in the room to talk to me about the results. He stands in the doorway telling me it was nothing, but then he adds, "well, you could come back in 3 months..." NO THANK YOU. read more

This is an amazing doctor. He specializes in endocrine and breast cancers. Although it can take quite a while to get an appointment and to be seen as a new patient, it's well worth all of it. He reknown in his field, has great bedside manner and will be operating on me (for a second thyroid surgery - his first - my second) in the Spring 2009. read more

I just read the previous two negative reviews and I have to give my rebuttal. Perhaps they did not have a positive experience, but I have been seeing Dr. G now for 10 years. I initially went to him as I had a solid mass that turned out to be negative and I can tell you that I go faithfully every year even though I could go to Tower Imaging for a cheap quicky I never would. I've also referred friends with cancer and he's been the best. Dr. G is very caring and he has a much larger and more complicated patient base than most doctors. Dr. Guiliano is the best there is. An appointment at any tertiary medical center may require a wait, but he is worth it. You will get expert surgery, state-of-the-art treatment, and compassionate caring. I drove 2 hours each way to see him and have him perform my surgery, after consulting someone locally. 2 years later, I am still doing great. I was first referred to Dr. Giuliano in 1988, at the age of 35, after having consulted with 3 other surgeons, who all agreed the lump I had been concerned about was definitely benign. When I met Dr. Giuliano, and we spoke for just a few minutes, I immediately knew HE was the surgeon that was going to do my biopsy! My tumor WAS malignant, he did a lumpectomy, and I did have another one, six years later, at which time he performed a mastectomy. That was in 1994. I am here, today, thanks to this extraordinary man, to tell you my story. I have been going for my yearly exams, since then. I have followed Dr. Giuliano from UCLA, to St. Johns and now to Cedars-Sinai. I will follow him, wherever he may land, because he is not only the best surgeon on the face of the earth, with hands of gold ... but one of the most down-to-earth and caring human beings I have ever been blessed to have met and have had remain in my life. So ... does it take a while to get an appointment? Yes. Do you have to wait, in the waiting room, for your appointment, at times? Yes. Dr. Giuliano will answer each and every one of YOUR questions, and make sure you are comfortable with his explanations, no matter how long it may take. Glad to see Dr. G is still going strong. He performed an adrenalectomy on my wife in 1991 and saved me from a failed melanoma excision in 1992. I saw him for followups for another 6 years, even though he moved into the breast cancer part of John Wayne. I was the only guy in his waiting room most of the time. He was often a bit blunt but always honest. The successes of his surgeries 24 and 23 years later speak for themselves. Do yourself a favor and wait however long it takes to see him. read more
