We are used to rustic camping so full hook up was nice. As forewarned water is from iron country. Ranger Jeff was available by phone at all times. The campsites were clean as is whole park. Dumpster available for trash. Layout was confusing but we walked most of the park and enjoyed nature, winter berries, moss and natural beauty. The parks features were closed unsure if available in warmer/busy season. It is across the street from the lake and 15 miles from town, convenient for needed/forgotten things. If you are looking for a place to just chill this is perfect. We were there for the Fourth of July and although I'm sure back in the day this place was super busy. We had such a great time here last summer (2023). Jeff, his daughter, and her husband are great people. I don't understand some of the bad reviews. The beer is great (and I'm an Oregon beer snob), and having the lake across the street is a nice bonus. Someone wrote you had to be a rock climber to get down to the beach, which is completely false. My wife and I are both disabled with backs and knees, and we had no problems walking down the trail. Besides that, the beach is not part of the campground. read more

If you want the real honest review on RV Parks, here is our most recent one. If not I understand. If you are going to the Marquette, Michigan area, DO NOT STAY at the "Gitchee Gummee RV Park at 2048 Hiway M-28, Marquette, Mich.). It is NOT in Marqutte. It is 15 miles outside of Marquette. This place is VERY COSTLY ($95. per night, $1200. per mth.) and they do NOT live up to ANY of their claims. Why we stayed here to begin with, I'll never know. The other parks must have been full. They demand an immediate upfront NON-REFUNDABLE FULL PAYMENT upon making your reservation. When you here this - RUN or drive as fast as you can to somewhere else. The maintence on everything is poor to horrible. The laundry room & bathrooms are filthy. The RV sites our 40 ft Class A Motorhome was stuffed into ($95. per night, no weekly or any other discounts) was poor & tight. Just rock & sand. No picnick table or fire ring, barely room for our slide outs. Now I made our reservations 3 months ago. Plenty of time to get a decent space. This was not. The owner/mgr (Jeff) was friendly & nice at registration, but afymter that he is nearly impossible to find. We heard lots of neighbors who had many complaints & issues about the park. The boat of a game room -if you can call it that. The also say they have a brewery, but no one is ever there. Plus there is no food served there, just bad beer. The have signs in a building saying "Fresh Fudge". Never smelled or saw any fudge or people in any of the buildings. I tried to contact the Mgr 5 times in 2 days, but couldn't find him or anyone else. Al of the buildings were void of workers or anyone else. I left 2 notes & a phone message asking to be called, which never happened. I just happened to catch Jeff one day just as I was leaving his empty office. When I asked him about the mail, he said they don't FedEx or UPS pkgs here. They refuse to deliver here! When I asked further about USPS mail or pkgs, he says we'll that's another story. When we or others asked him about any issues, his pat answers are "That's a long story or That's another story." Oh, they claim they have wi'fi, but the only place you can get it is inside they're brewery, but who wants to trek down to the brewery every time they want to access their internet? No one is hardly ever there anyway. I would have a had time even giving this place a rating of 1. That would be generous. It is obvious the folks (Jeff & his daughter) at this park are only interested in ring in the money, not the happiness or comfort of their customers. read more

This campground has a very genuine and earnest feeling to it. The tent campsites were far enough apart that you could have a little privacy to do your thing. We found the staff to be very friendly and hospitable. The owner is an artist at heart so there's a lot of cool folk art and experimental architecture to check out. Beware! I booked this campground over a year ago. I had to change plans due to family matter which prevented us from visiting this campground. I spoke with Jeff in October and he said not an issue and would refund my money. After multiple phone calls, he still hasnt refunded my money. He is now refusing to take my calls. Jeff is a liar, cheat and dishonest owner that shouldnt be trusted. If he turns this problem around I will update. We visited Gitche Gumee RV Park, no overnight stay. We love staying here! We stayed for a few nights at a pull through site near the front of the campground with full hook ups. It was quiet and we really enjoyed the in the woods feel but also being close to town. Bonus that Lake Superior is within walking distance across the street! The water has a lot of iron in it but that's to be expected up here and our water filter really helps. We are full timers and plan to come back for the rest of the summer. We are back for a second time now at this gem of a park in the Marquette, MI. Please read for a full description of the Park and what to expect. Try not to compare this RV experience on price as up here in the UP the camping season is only about 4 good months so pricing will be a little higher than what you are used. Also, don't expect much as far as amenities go as again this an experience to be up here and enjoy the simple majestic views the area has to offer. If are looking for a cookie cutter type RV place try getting into Country Village near Ishpeming. More likely they will be full so this is your next best option to being close to Marquette and all of its beauty. Rates are around $50 a night and he will work with you for weekly and monthly stays. If you reserve and pay in advance there are no refunds so be mindful of that. This is still one of our favorite parks after full time traveling for the past 7 years. It is connected to Mountain Bike / ORV trails from the back of the campground. Plenty of tree foliage throughout the park to have some shade and not so tight next to your neighbors. Across the street is a road pull off stock to view the lake. Steps leading down taking out by storms. You can still access at your own risk for a nice beach side to enjoy the water. The Good: Downtown Marquette. (11 miles away) Pictured Rocks Tours. (32 miles away) Full hookups 30/50 Amp service. Large even sites. (gravel / dirt) Lots of trees. Fun rec room and movie room. Lots of hand stone carvings. Laundry on site. Across the road is Lake Superior with a walk down beach, stair down have been removed due to storms. The Bad: Water is well, so be mindful of that. Pressure was low so fill your fresh fill when you can and pump from there. We worked fine from our RV using Verizon and a booster and this time we are finding that our AT&T is having better success on 3G for reliability. Park has Wifi, but spotty so I wouldn't rely on it. read more

Got to Marquette in the hopes of staying at the casino camp ground. Unfortunately, they didn't have one. They told us there was a camp ground less than a mile away. WHAT A DUMP!! $79 a night!! Bathrooms are disgustingly dirty, no toilet paper. Not worth the money. Boondock it in the casino parking lot, spend that money on a nice meal there. Better way of spending your money. read more

DO NOT STAY HERE! THIS IS A TOTAL SCAM! We came here in July of 2021 and after 3 years of camping, this is the absolute WORST campground we've ever been to. The site we were given was so tight that Jeff, the owner, pulled out a chainsaw and started chopping down trees. Our RV was scratched like crazy. Our fireplace was so far into the bushes that is was unusable. The playground that was listed on the map isn't there, the bathrooms are filthy, the laundry room was covered in mold, and the "high speed internet" is a shack with a power strip. The "on site bar" and fudge factory never opened the entire week we were there. Also, the fishing pond on site was private property and the steps to the beach that are advertised on the website are a mile down the road. Worst of all, THE WATER WAS BROWN! Do not come here unless you are looking for a reason to never camp again. read more

Terrible location. The site gives tons of things you can do, like swimming or going on trails. This park is NOT on a beach, so I don't know how you'd swim- the beach across the street isn't accessible unless you can rock climb. As well, there were no trails. The mens' room was unusable throughout the entire length of our three-day stay. There was vomit underneath every stall. I called the park office to let them know, and they rushed to hang up and it was never cleaned. The way these bathrooms look, it seems they clean them once when the season is over and never before that. The toilets shoot pisswater when you flush them, as well as the urinals. Total scam. the website misrepresents the status of the park and what is offered. Everything is closed, the lake has green scum on it and the bathroom toilets looked like they had not been flushed in a long time. We didn't even unpack. We asked for a refund and owner said that he didn't know how to use the credit card machine but would have his book keeper do it. Three weeks later no refund and no answer at the park. I was worried after I read the reviews. We needed a place over night while passing through. It is Rustic. It is Woodsy. There's a great view of Lk Superior....from the driveway. It might have had a lot of charm in its early years but.....the water is full of iron. Smells terribly and is very colored. We even used a filter on the camper and it still couldn't get all the smell and color out. There is barely any cell signal. We didn't see that there was Wi-Fi. The office staff...assuming they were the owners...were very friendly. I wouldn't stay again but I liked that we did give it a go....RVing is after all all about the adventure! read more

Had a great 2 night stay. We ditched a reservation we had at a State Park in search of a better setup and we found it. He answered the call, had space available, was welcoming upon arrival; campsite had 50amp, awesome camping woodsy feel/look, full hookup. What more could you want. I see the reviews about the refunds, but I'm used to not getting refunds for any cancellations. The state parks charge you if you don't cancel with like a 5 months notice!!! I never expect a refund I just drive on if for some reason our plans change. ‍ Anyway, we'd happily stay again. Bring your own firewood! read more

We saw the bad reviews but, being novice campers we gave it a try anyway. It is a rustic campground. We liked that there were trees around and it felt Like we were in the woods. The water is full of iron, we ended up not drinking it but did use it to shower. We had a camper so we never used the public bathrooms. It is a good location across from Lake Superior. Close to downtown. I wouldn't recommend it to someone with little kids. There is no pool or playground. The beach across the street is not for swimming. I would recommend to adults camping though. read more

Fantastic rustic RV Park! Awesome owners and staff!! We have a Newmar 2021 New Aire motorhome and we're slightly skeptical after reading other reviews, however, that was gone the minute we pulled into the park! If you like large, level, gravel sites with full hookups then this place is for you. A lodge with games, pool tables, tv, bar with cold beer, clean bathrooms, darkness at night, easy path to a cool bike trail to Marquette. Blueberry bushes everywhere and we are making blueberry pancakes tomorrow am. It's a quiet, beautiful place with Lake Superior across the street. We will definitely be back! read more

I stayed here one night while I was driving through the area. I had a tent site. It was fine for me, but the tent sites are right next to the highway, and the cars are pretty loud. My site had a broken, decaying picnic table. I didn't need to use it, but it certainly should be replaced. Check-in/registration was difficult, It took 15 minutes and five buildings to find someone to help. The bathrooms were disgusting. I only used it once, but it wasn't pleasant. The sink area is is disrepair. I can't comment on showers. I was told upon arrival that the hot water was broken, but I wouldn't have used the showers anyway. Overall, the campground has potential. It seems that it was a cool place in its heyday, with a downtown area that has [had?] fudge making and other activities. But, it's far from that now. I'd stay again for a night if I was driving through, but I wouldn't choose to stay for more than that. read more

We stayed at the campground as a last minute decision. There wasn't many options as it was Blueberry Festival and Art of the Rocks festival that same weekend in Marquette. Their policy as stated on their website is no refunds for any reason. I get that, if you can't rent it out to someone else. You should also be making sure to state that when people call to make reservations and then you follow it up in writing in an e-mail or something. But, our reservations were not made online and the policy was no stated on the phone and nothing was e-mailed. My parents are elderly and this was to be their last trip before we sold the camper because they no longer get around very well. My mother fell and sustained a serious break to her leg a week before the trip. I called the campground and asked if there was anything they could do about even a partial refund. The woman answering the phone said she would talk to the owner and call back. If they could rent out the space, well maybe we could get my parents almost $500 back. How they got charged almost $500 when it was supposed to be $55/night and the stay was 4 nights is beyond me because they did not e-mail any kind of receipt. If it couldn't be rented and you didn't want to take that loss as a business, that is understandable. But, they never called back. They just charged the money. We had a friend check out the campground on the nights my parents were to stay there. They rented this spot to someone else each and every night! And, they still charged charged my parents almost $500 for a 4 night stay. I understand no refunds is the policy, but really?! Double dipping like that is a dishonest policy to have. Leading someone to believe you might help them out due to extenuating circumstances and then not doing anything but gouging them without a word is a bad business practice. Renting the space over the phone to an elderly person and never telling them about the policy to begin with or following up with e-mail is also a bad business practice. read more

My husband and I stayed at this RV park July 3rd through July 5th as part of our Lake Superior Circle Tour. The online information for this campground shows a beautiful lodge area. This was very dirty. It had a sign for free coffee. All we saw was empty creamers and trash with a jug of dirty water. It also shows a fudge factory which is not operational. In addition, the owner told us the "brewery" would open at 7 p.m. for tastings. The "brewery" wasn't open the night he told us this but was open the next night. It isn't a brewery, it's a bar and there are no tastings. The dumpster wasn't emptied while we were there despite being overflowing and garbage being piled around the outside of it. This is not a good practice in bear country. Our site in the section we were in was not at all level and wouldn't be recognized as a site if not for the water and electric hookups. On the day we left, we went to the dump station. It was full to overflowing with stool floating around in a pool of liquid over the sewer. We paid $69 a night for this site. Very, very disappointed. read more

BEWARE! In May (2012) we sent a deposit to hold a site for us in July (2012), and five days later had to cancel. After initially telling us he would refund our deposit, Jeff Glass, the owner has disappeared and will not return our calls, emails, or letters. His assistant, Jack, tells us that Jeff is in Florida or Kansas, and that he'll pass along our messages, but we never have received a return call. This is not a reputable or ethical business. Update - We sued Mr. Glass in small claims. Because he never responded to any of the summons, we won by deafult, and because we were in Marquette at the time and knew where he banked, we got our money back, plus court costs, through a court order. A bunch of really nice sites. Lovely setting. Good firm unpaved roads inside the park. No chance of getting bogged down. Basically clean and decent. Some sand tracked around the shower area, but nothing dirty. It's in a forested sand dune setting so I might expect dune sand to be around. Interesting art displays around camp. Might could use an update in some aspects, but an update might only spoil some of the charm. Ridiculously great beach at a park across the highway. Go for a swim in Lake Superior to start your day right. Great wooded setting with mostly pine and poplar. Some great smelling trees here. Our pull thru was set up perfect. Easy angle to pull in. As a previous review said, if I could leave zero stars I would -- this owner, Jeff is a total scammer!! I made a reservation on Sunday August 20th in 2017 for Friday and Saturday nights - Aug. 25th and 26th. We gave my husbands credit card information and were not told we would be billed the full amount up front for our stay to start with... On Monday Aug. 21st before noon I called to cancel the reservation - a full 5 days of notice - well within the refund policy timeframe. On Friday on our drive up from WI, my husband noted that his card had indeed been charged the full $80 ($40 per night) for the reservation up front and he had not seen a refund yet. I called then, Friday, the 25th and spoke with the owner, Jeff who claimed he was in town and not near the credit card machine to refund the charge. A couple weeks later still no refund. We spoke to him several more times, even recorded our conversations - he would say he was out in the campground not in the office. Finally, we caught on to his game and asked if he was in the office to start with, when he said yes, we asked him to do the refund, said he couldn't while he was on the phone but that he would. Now we are almost exactly a year since then and still nothing. I would've filed small claims against him as it appears others have had to do in order to get their refund, however we are 5 hours away and it would take two separate trips to file and then appear in court - where most likely this guy wouldn't show up as he didn't for others who reviewed similar situations on YELP and Trip Advisor. We are beyond the window to dispute the charges with credit card company, and my only recourse thus far has been to file a compliant with the Better Business Bureau -- which show he is not accredited so not sure how seriously he will take the complaint anyway. We stayed there every year for 10 summers. The water was horrible. The bathrooms and showered were never cleaned. He charged us 2x what he charged others we found out after getting to know some of the regulars. In theory it's a great location but the owner has no clue how to run a campground. He only takes cash or check and will not give a refund. We got tired of being taken advantage of and some of the other nonsense that goes on. Here's the real deal. THIS IS THE U.P.. This campground personifies everything we love about what the U.P. stands for. Quirky culture, rustic scenery and adventure. We stayed here in September of 2015 and will be going back again every chance we get. The owner is a bit different but is a great guy at heart. He loves this campground and has put a ton of work into it over the years. The buildings are cool and frankly, a marvel of field engineering. There's even a library in one of them with some great old eclectic books. The water is U.P. water. it has iron in it. We double filtered our rig and the water came through clean. The owner has also hired a couple of full time caretakers that will help you with the things you may need. The sites are spread out, wooded and fairly level. The power was consistent and reliable. Do yourself a favor and go for an exploratory walk to the south across the ATV trail and discover the hidden sand dunes. As far as the people complaining about the weird costing structure, I didn't experience anything funny. I called the owner, he told me what the cost would be for the site and I paid it. Pretty simple and it was reasonable. If you want to glam-camp on a concrete pad in an open field, this is not for you. If you want to camp in some nice woods and feel the U.P. vibe, Gitche Gummi is great! read more
