I explained my legal issues with the apartment complex, that my apartment was over 85 degrees F and that the broken air conditioner unit and various other repairs were being refused by my landlord. When I called Robinson & Henry the first time, and paid for a consultation, I had an attorney explain to me the uninhabitable statute and what procedure to follow to move out of my apartment and get my deposit back. This was helpful information. I followed the statute to a T, and ended up moving out of my apartment May 01, 2024. I called Robinson & Henry multiple times after this, to inform the attorney I spoke with that the apartment complex was refusing to give my security deposit back despite me moving out under the statute procedures. No return phone calls ever came. I physically went to the law firm, and asked to speak with someone, and was told no one was available and to call and set up an appointment. I kept trying. I paid, once again, for a consultation, about a separate issue. This consultation was also helpful, and the attorney I spoke with that time was great. I called more after this, multiple times, asking to follow-up with the first attorney I consulted with regarding my apartment issue. Eventually I got through to someone a few days ago, who briefly spoke with me and explained that I would need to pay a consultation fee again to follow-up on my legal matter. I explained to this individual that I had filed a lawsuit pro se against my apartment complex for my deposit back. Last week, I realised I had served the wrong registered agent and that the correct agent is registered as a foreign LLC from Delaware. My question was: "Do I still have jurisdiction to sue the apartment complex if their registered agent is registered in a state other than Colorado. Does Adams County Colorado still have jurisdiction?" The woman I spoke with who had answered the phone told me she would relay the message to the attorney and I would get a call back letting me know if I needed to pay a consultation fee again or not. I explained that I did not have the money for a third consultation fee, I had already paid nearly $300. I was emailed a contract by the law firm after this, for a limited representation agreement & consultation fee of $200, with a link to pay. I ignored this email, as I do not have the additional $200 to spend to ask one question. I decided I would simply wait until my court date next week and ask the judge for a continuance and advice. Later, I got a phone call from an administrative person at the law firm calling to see if I had paid the fee, or if I wanted to then. I explained to them that I could not afford the fee, had already paid previously. I was trying to explain that I felt like the attorney could answer this question pretty quickly and I didn't really need a whole consultation for it, additionally that I was no longer in Colorado and couldn't come in for it anyway. The admin lady was quite rude. She said to me that the attorneys are unable to give legal advice without a retainer or fee. She went on to say it would "be unethical" for them to do so. I said back to her that I felt it was unethical for a lawyer to charge $200 for a 2-minute conversation where they answer a quick question. She said okay and we hung up and I was then sent an email with a cancellation of the contract and fee. Additionally and very important to note, It is not unethical for attorneys to provide pro bono legal advice and services. I've worked in the legal field for a few years now, even at a Legal Services firm in Florida where the entire firm is Pro Bono. Nothing about providing indigent people with assistance is "unethical." If you have the power and resources to help those in need and you choose to charge them $200 instead of simply answering a question, then you are simply out of touch with reality. I will not recommend this firm to anyone moving forward, as you are clearly a firm here to make as much money as possible, doing the least amount of help possible.

I found him to be dishonest and felt he did not have his client's best interests in mind. We contacted the firm for help with an eviction after a tenant stopped paying rent. During the initial kick-off call, everything seemed fine, and we were told the fees would likely run between $800 and $1,200 depending on the work required. Once Mr. Moses took over, the nightmare began. He seemed professional at first, but the billing quickly spiraled out of control. Our very first bill was $1,100 just for the kick-off call and an initial conversation with Mr. Moses. I noticed that he would constantly reach out requesting additional meetings, paperwork, or information from my wife (who is the legal owner of the property). Every time we spoke--usually at his request--we received an outrageous bill. At a certain point, I was afraid to answer his calls, respond to messages, or send emails because I knew I would be charged for it. When I questioned these excessive fees, his only response was that he needed to be compensated for his time. After he finally gathered all the documents, a week went by, and he requested another meeting to discuss the case. During that call, he told us he felt the first demand letter took too long (3 weeks) and that he was uncomfortable presenting it to a judge for fear the case would be thrown out, meaning we had to draft an entirely new demand. At that point, wanting nothing more to do with the law firm and their outrageous fees, we bypassed them and reached a direct agreement with the tenant to vacate. When we contacted the firm one last time to inform them the issue was resolved, we received a final bill of $1,348. In total, Joshua Moses billed us nearly $5,000. Essentially, the only actual work performed was posting two demand notices on the tenant's door. The case never went before a judge, and the tenant never contested it. When a client is afraid to contact their own legal representation out of fear of unreasonable fees, there is a major problem. When a law firm's primary objective seems to be racking up billable hours rather than resolving the case, it needs to be addressed. We will be reaching out to external organizations, including the Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel (OARC), to file a formal complaint. As for the retainer, we likely will not bother trying to recover it, knowing Mr. Moses would likely just invent more fees to swallow it up.

I could ramble about the work itself: a couple of small-business operating agreements, done well at an exceedingly reasonable rate, with plenty of great advice in the mix. That was great, but it's not really why I'm writing this. Why I'm actually writing this: Sam is a really, really good person, and working with him feels more like getting warm advice from a favorite cousin than a lawyer-client transaction. I've worked with quite a few (often excellent) Denver lawyers over the years for various reasons, but Sam is different -- I trusted him immediately, and felt like he really cares about my tiny little LLC. My business is relatively simple, but I find myself actively looking for excuses to contact Sam. Do we need a new operating agreement yet? Can we... I don't know, acquire a company or something with our stockpile of $52 and a pair of broken shoelaces? Don't overthink it: just call, and I can promise you'll at least have a good conversation with a great human who knows his stuff.
