I spotted that nice working fireplace that at the time needed attention, but by the looks of it, the staff are always on top of it.

I'm not a fan of chain pubs in general and The Slug and Lettuce is unlikely to change my mind. The…read moredecor is bland and generic and the atmosphere is nothing special. The two things it has over other chains is outdoor seating for spring and summer days and an extensive menu including sharing platters. Naturally, the dishes lean towards easy fresh and frozen foods but on a sunny day - it's an okay place to catch up with a friend over lunch.

The Slug & Lettuce brand is reliably above average. This particular pub-cum-restaurant is decidedly…read moreugly from the outside, but that just seems to be the case with the majority of the businesses on George Street. This town high street hosts particularly uninspired architecture, which makes the Slug & Lettuce look, well, rather sluggish. Step inside however and you're thankfully transported from the dullness and taken to a place that is gentle and simplistic in its tastefulness. Although more expensive than some other chain pubs, like the terrible Weatherspoons across the way, the Slug & Lettuce does still offer value for money. The food is tasty enough - though best suited for lunch rather than a romantic evening meal. The staff are a friendly enough bunch, though rather quiet, but this is not such a bad thing. Overall this is a solid 3-star affair. If you're on the high street and want a quick drink or bite to eat for less than £10 a head, you're sorted. If you're after a fancier job, then go somewhere along Church Road instead.

The restaurant is downstairs from the hotel but looks out onto ground level, (phew). The interior walls are adorned with artwork that adds to the Parisian vibe their going for. The decor is pretty swish with a window box, leather clad seats and a long cushioned bench. The menu is proper French A La Carte so do not be asking for burgers and chips. The bistro offers Duck Confit, Braised Lamb Shank, Smoked Fish Platter.... i think you get the idea. As usual being a massive cheese fiend i went for the Baked Camembert with Truffle Oil (OMG) and Brie, Goats and Broccoli Rosti (OMG OMG). Both were absolutely fantastic. Great for a first date, not so great for small children. Its not as scarily priced as you might think with the most expensive main at £13 when i went. They also sometimeS do a mid week deal of 3 courses for £14.50, which cant be bad can it?

Housed in the the New Steine Hotel, it wouldn't be an obvious choice either but I'm lucky someone filled me in. The decor is very continental, with banquette seating, crisp linens and soft furnishings adding to the feeling of luxury. Ever the bargain hunter, I generally visit here during the week when you can enjoy a 2 course meal for £12.50, although at the weekends it is only an additional £4. For the quality of dishes they offer this is a remarkable price I might add. Inventive dishes like Skate Wing and Chorizo Salad or Duck Confit (on a bed of lentils and pancetta) are presented with flair and precision and the waiters sweep dishes and fill glasses with minimal disturbance. No wonder this bistro has won the AA Breakfast and Dinner Award for outstanding quality and service. Book now.

It's quite cozy inside but Brix had booked a table. Despite its proximity to the station, it was a nice relaxing place to chill and chat. It did get busy later with football fans and we vacated our table so that others could eat There was a good varied menu with some ambitious dishes on there. I was warned that the portions size is generous here and you certainly won't go away hungry. You know it's a good menu when it's really difficult to choose I eventually settled on scallops with black pudding and potatoes served on salad including apple. The portion was huge and while the presentation wasn't fine dining and certainly wasn't intended to be fine dining, the combination of flavours was spot on. The scallops were sweet and I appreciated the fact that they had left the coral on - there is so much flavour there. The slightly spicy and deep flavour of the black pudding was the perfect foil and the salad dressing was well judged. Yum This is a pub with a serious kitchen. Recommended!

Inside you are greeted by an impressive selection of wines and ales, enough to please any potential connoisseur. While this isn't exactly something to write home about, the food certainly is. Inside the Yeoman, you won't find reconstituted burgers with a helping of soggy chips. You will instead be given the task of choosing from a weekly menu of locally sourced dishes, combing traditional British cooking with a modern continental influence. This isn't the cheapest lunch you will ever have, but it is possibly the best one you'll find in Brighton. The Yeoman would be more at home in trendy North London, not 20 yards from Brighton station's smoking area. That however, is our gain, and not London's. If you are searching for a warm meal, this pub won't be for you. However, if you really want to try good food, then look no further.
