Been going here for years and this place (food AND service) just keeps getting better and better!! We always start out with the Miso Soup. It's soooo good and always served at the perfect temperature! My daughter tasted mine when she was three years old, and has always ordered it since! She's now six! Tokyo Maki, Firework, and Shaggy Dog are the best specialty rolls. We order these consistently! Our daughter, who is now six, actually can eat three orders of sashimi (smoked salmon). I'm personally not a fan of JUST fish, but she absolutely loves it. It melts in your mouth! Everything is ALWAYS extremely fresh and plated beautifully. We've tried other sushi bars, but unfortunately for them, none of them are even close to Ginger Cafe! Even the fancy ones in Houston! They have recently expanded within the past year or so, and so has their menu. They even offer chef specials now, which are ALWAYS a hit. Ginger Cafe is a very small restaurant. It has just a few tables and a sushi bar. The food, however, is great! If you're looking for sushi, japanese or chinese food you need to try this place out. The sushi is always very fresh. It comes to you remarkably quick, and the presentation is always great. If you're not a fan of sushi (ie. my wife), the dishes are great, too. The miso soup and the egg drop soup are the best I have tried. As far as price goes, their lunch combos are extremely reasonable. And they are served 7 days a week! read more

The menu offers many options including chicken egg rolls, tempura shrimp and broccoli and steak...all of my favs. Our food was served piping hot. Anytime we are close to Ginger Cafe, we stop! Since we are about 45 minutes away we don't get there often, but when we do, it's great! The portion sizes are perfect. We always say you get a decent portion of quality food versus a huge potion of mediocre food. The last time we were there, the server gave our four year old a modified pair of chopsticks, which had her eating her new with them effortlessly. Their attentiveness to their customers is nice! We were greeted immediately and given seating immediately. This was my first time eating here and initially we didn't understand the menu but the waitresses were happy to tell us how their menu worked. It was very cozy and long after people ate they would sit and talk because the ambience was so relaxing. The waitresses were quick and willing to give us refills on our drinks or asking if we wanted to order anything else. The best part of it was probably the cream puffs and the fried calamari. They were so fresh and so different than any of the other restaurants that served cream puffs and calamari. Also the combo bento boxes were amazing. When you ordered your rolls they also came with a soup of your choice and an amazing salad. Overall it was a great experience and it may be a "little" expensive but it is so worth it read more

Me and my husbands favorite sushi restaurant, and we've lived all over Houston, including the heights (best food area in Houston). Been here easily 100 times over the past 6 years and have never had a bad experience, obviously everyone has their good and bad days but I'm never disappointed with Ginger! Their shaggy dog roll and crunchy maki (kani) roll is AMAZING!!! And they have the best wonton soup (I've tried many), also their crab wontons are always perfect! Today was my second time visiting, and both times have been pleasant. My husband and I both had lunch specials. I had the sushi lunch which is about 11 dollars with your choice of soup and a salad. He had a bento box of general tso chicken. I tried his chicken and to me the chicken tasted a bit rubbery. The flavor was good, but the quality of chicken not so much. The sushi on the other hand is really good. Melt in you mouth good. We also tried the Miami roll which was suggested by the waitress...yummmm! It had a nice crunch (panko) and just the right amount of "special sauce". The service is great here..the servers are attentive and very friendly. Pricing is reasonable. I really do hate to leave negative reviews, but one thing that I truly value is customer service. The food can be perfection, but if customer service is not there, food quality does not matter. Let me preface this review with a background story. When we moved to the area a little over 4 years ago we went to Ginger Cafe with our two year old daughter. My husband and I ordered our entrees and we asked for a side of plain noodles (no sauce, no meat, no veggies, simply noodles) for our daughter (one of the only things she would eat). We did not think this was an odd request. Pei Wei willingly sells a HUGE bowl of plain noodles for $0.99, Nara Thai also gladly sells a generous portion of noodles for $2. Other places have done this for our daughter as well, it has never ever been a problem. Ginger Cafe acted like we were crazy. The waitress said, "So, chicken lo mein?" We said, "No," and explained just noodles. Well, they finally brought out just noodles. It was a very teeny tiny portion of noodles that our toddler gobbled up in minutes and complained of hunger. When we received the bill, they charged us $6 for the kids chicken lo mein. We asked the waiter why we were charged for the chicken lo mein as she just had plain noodles. We were told they had no other way to ring it up. We asked to speak to the manager who told us the exact same thing. We just felt as though the $6 for a tiny portion of plain noodles was ridiculous and the excuse of "we have no other way to ring it up" shows a lack of care for the customer. My husband and I both had multiple sushi rolls and spent a great deal of money on our food. Anyway, after this experience we vowed to not go back. So fast forward to today...my parents have been going to Ginger Cafe and rave about it. My husband and I decided to try it on a date night (just the two of us) one night and enjoyed it. Well, tonight my husband, father-in-law, myself and our now two children decided to go. It was like a weird déjà vu. We all ordered our drinks and entrees and then I tried to order two sides of plain noodles for our two daughters (all they will eat). I was told by the waitress, "We can't do that. We have no way to ring that up." I said, "No one ever asks for a side of noodles with their entree?" Her reply was, "No." We asked to speak to the manager he came over and told us the same thing. "We have no way to ring it up. We have to sell you chicken lo mein." We begrudgingly agreed. We ordered ONE kids lo mein, but just noodles, no sauce, no meat, no veggies, etc. They brought out a very tiny portion on noodles for each child and just like four years ago, our daughter gobbled it up in a moment and then complained of hunger and just like four years ago we were charged $6 for chicken lo mein even though it was just plain noodles. Once again, we spent a great deal of money on adult entrees. I just hate the excuse of "we have no way to ring it up." You can't charge a miscellaneous $2 or $3 charge?! Or charge us for something else on the menu?! Once again we vowed to never go back to Ginger Cafe. We'll stick to it this time. The food is good, but not worth the hassle when we can go to Nara or Pei Wei and be accommodated. read more

This is my second time coming here. The first time I came here I ordered a roll of the shaggy dog. It was pretty good; I've never been a sushi lover but for some reason craving that day. And my second time coming here I ordered a chicken Katsu. It was by far the best Katsu I've ever had! On Sunday afternoons my friends and I usually like to go out to easy after church and for the longest time we stopped going to 838 sushi because the service was so bad and the rolls were as big as a quarter. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants. Their Shaggy Dog is so good, but their service sucks! Oh how I do wish they wouldn't play on their laptops the whole time. I haven't been back in two years because the bad service. My father, mother, and I went to have lunch about two years ago there and my dad wanted to get a bento box with chicken except it was fried. He asked if they would grill it instead and they would not. It would have been an easy fix and made the customer happy. The outside is unassuming for a restaurant with a great atmosphere inside. Sushi was great. We tried the spicy tuna roll and the sashimi plate. Both were delicious and fresh. We went for sushi since it is about 3 blocks from my new house. It was very tasty sushi although not the best I've had. By far the best sushi roll is imitation crab meat cucmber avacodo with scallop and a spicy mayo on top then baked in the oven. Very good and rich I will be back to try it again. read more

This is a 'Tale of Two Tastes". I thought the place was good, wifey did not. I had driven to IAH to pick her up from a visit she made to NYC and since it was dinnertime I suggested that we eat in Atascocita. I found the Ginger Cafe after a brief search and was impressed with the Yelp reviews. The restaurant is a 'hole in the wall' in a small strip mall, but it was clean and inviting. We sat 'at the bar', which, for a sushi place is the place to be. My main complaint is that I was unaware of the fact that they are "Sushi & Chinese" until we saw the storefront of the place. Those are two cuisines that, in my opinion, do not mix well. I thought the Chinese aspect of the menu and decor detracted from the Japanese cultural aesthetic. If I want Chinese I will go to a Chinese restaurant. I digress. They had Ebi, which is sweet shrimp, and they served it with the head. If you don't know what this means don't worry about it, but it is my favorite thing on a sushi menu and my 'litmus test' to determine how skilled the chef is. I rated the ebi a 4/5, which actually is pretty good by my standards as it take quite a bit to score a 5. Other than ebi, I generally only order sashimi and the three items I had were fresh and well displayed. The wasabe was intense and that is how I like it. Presentation is a key element of the whole sushi thing and I thought Ginger Cafe did a fine job. Prices were not bad and the sake selection was good. My wife, who only eats rolls and mostly cooked items, was not impressed with any of it. Certainly a good little eatery, but not a candidate for the cover of "Sushi Today" magazine. Ginger Cafe is one of those gems amidst an otherwise drab and boring food scene. The thing I like about Ginger Cafe is that it's good food without the corporate chain feel to it. Yes, their menu is very similar to other Asian restaurants but the quality is so much better. You can taste the concern they have for quality. It isn't a bunch of food mass produced and sitting under a heat lamp all day. It's cooked fresh and with care. The sushi as well is done with excellence. There are a lot of Americanized options on the sushi menu because Americans just gotta make things complicated but I've had most of the menu and must say that it is all very good. The service is, for the most part, very hands off but that's not necessarily a bad thing. They're willing to refill drinks, add to orders, and check on things but they don't bombard you with forced service. I know this may sound like a con but when you walk in you feel like you're home and just as you would ask someone at home to pass the salt you should feel you can ask them for assistance without it being awkward or inconvenient. read more
