We had a terrible experience here. I got tied up at work, and so was a few minutes late dropping my…read more5yr old child off for class in the park. Because of this, the instructor decided to single out my child and punish them in front of the entire class. I mean, how is it a 5yr old child's fault for being late? Why would an adult do this? Because my son was new to this class and singled out for discipline, he became extremely embarrassed and ran to hide behind a nearby tree. The instructor immediately called me back into the class and explained to me, again, in front of the whole class, that she cannot abide kids running into the road (he went nowhere near the road) and so was kicking him out. I was shocked. What kind of adult needs to lord authority over children this way? Had she pulled me aside to talk about being late, fine. But punishing my child? On his 3rd day?! I'm left feeling like the people in charge here don't know how to handle small children. Take yours here at your own risk.

I am a martial artist myself and I can say that there is no place that I would rather send my daughter for training. This is a great program. Top-notch Shaolin martial arts training, but - more importantly - I have seen my daughter grow in strength and confidence as a result of this program. The belt promotions in this school are not given away, students have to work hard for them! My daughter has learned how to push herself to achieve more than she thought possible and she's already learned that to achieve anything worthwhile, she's going to have to work for it. Those are great life lessons that I hope will stay with her forever. I highly recommend Healthkick Kung Fu!

After losing a few months practice due to the move, Master Nakane got me back up to the level I needed to be for my black belt in a few short months. After earning my black belt, I continued to study with Master Nakane, and I'm glad I did. My class is small and is all adults, which has allowed me to learn a LOT in a short amount of time. (Although I think there is a children's class before the adult class.) The atmosphere of the class is a nice mixture of traditional martial arts formality and fun. Besides the class in Downers Grove, Master Nakane teaches a biweekly class in Evanston as well as a class at Northwestern. If you've ever thought about studying Tae Kwon Do, this is the place!

I cannot take him because of work so i send my teenager or my mother, therefore i had no idea what was going on. After 3 weeks i get an call from Mr Cardenas(professor) in a very angry tone about my son. He went on to tell me how my son wasn't following instructions after 3 weeks and how he didn't know anything, basically emphasizing that my son was dumb. Now my son has always had problems learning, this is something i have struggled with and as a parent, its very emotionally draining. All of these things where told to the professor when i signed him up. My son made a negative comment that i do not condone, again he is 8, but Mr. Cardenas felt the need to call my son a "future criminal" my son is not violent or has never displayed violence anywhere, on the contrary i am angry he doesn't defend himself. I snapped at the comment, he apologized but he definitely showed disgust in my son trough his tone. This man and his wife never, ever crack a smile. they humiliate the kids if they are not following instructions. that is obvious if he felt bold enough to make such a disrespectful comment about an 8 year old child. I did discipline and lecture my child later that evening, and he finally broke down in tears about how much he missed his father that left him years ago, this hit me like a train. my son doesn't show interest in anything because he is emotionally challenged, but to MR CARDENAS he is a future criminal . my son or anyone i know will ever attend this academy. The only good i got out of it was finally learning what was affecting my son. the absence of a male figure in his life. way to go MR. Cardenas your humiliation cracked the code. I am now seeking counseling for my son

I wanted to meet…read morenew people, learn a new skill, and (yes) maybe even impress a girl down the road should I ever be caught in a tango dance situation. The first three classes were tough, but I was encouraged by Liz Sung, who was very patient with me. I'll always remember that because we were also the only Asian people in the room. By the fourth class, though, I remember the director Jorge Niedas becoming unhappy with me. After doing my best through a piece, he hovered criticizing my every move and complimenting my partner when we weren't doing anything differently. I was persevering as best as I could when he cut in front of me with my partner, said "You're terrible at tango" and danced the rest of the piece with my partner while I stood there shocked. I tried to put on a smile, but I was miserable and humiliated standing in the corner while all the couples went on. When I started getting emails about future events, I told producer Dinah D'Antoni I wouldn't be returning. When she asked why, I said "I felt that the class was too serious and overly critical to be fun. I was also interested in meeting new friends, but there were just too many dating/married couples." It was so hard to summon the courage to go to a dance studio, especially both as a male and single around all the couples, and with the unprofessional and inappropriate feedback I got, I don't think I'll ever dance again. Why would I subject myself to treatment like that? It's just not worth it. Lesson learned: Life is better as a wallflower.
