Beautiful restaurant, somewhat overpriced and pretty disappointing service…read more We were visiting with a group with a wide array of preferences, and while the restaurant did have options for everyone, I have to admit it was fairly overpriced for what we received. Drinks were attractive but weak for $30 apiece. Portions were small. Service was non-existent - noone checked on us once, refilled water, asked us if we wanted another drink, etc. We actually had to flag someone down twice for a check. What we did have was good but it was extremely expensive for what it was. We would not recommend.

Cue Sono. We loved the restaurant for the atmosphere and truly excellent service (personal, informative / knowledgeable, entertaining). We both ordered the 'tasting menu' with wine/sake pairing. For starters, the amount of alcohol in the pairing is really quite high (half full glasses x 6). Not sure that this was even possible, but I would have preferred less(!) alcohol (I guess we could have just let some of it go to waste, but that would be near sacrilegious). If you don't mind sipping from the same glass with your dinner partner, I'd recommend ordering just one wine/sake pairing (and save $45 in the process). Now, for the food. Some of it was really excellent (particularly the first half), but not all of it knocked our socks off. Definite highlights were the oyster in lime sauce (part of dish 1 - all of dish one was great really), salmon sashimi and snapper carpaccio in vinaigrette (part of 2), and the delicious crab meat croquette (part of 3). The fourth course had a delicious piece of seared salmon belly sushi, but the two pieces of cucumber sushi roll and one piece of prawn tempura roll felt a bit out of place in a menu like this. Maybe it was designed as light intermediate bite? Our mains were duck breast, which was ok but not special, and excellent Wagyu steak, but in a rather heavy sauce (too sweet imo). The desert was a chocolate cake, which was tasty, but not wow, and not spectacularly presented either, as you often get when splurging on a degustation. Wine/sake pairings were great. Service was excellent. Would be happy to eat here again some day and pick some of our favorites from this tasting menu.

The restaurant was hopping (we made a reservation) with more people coming in at 12.30pm. There were 5 of us and 4 of us opted for the chirashi set, while my dad ordered the sashimi set. We also ordered tempura, chicken karaage, grilled squid and nasu miso (miso eggplant). Everything was good, especially the salted grilled squid (there is also teriyaki) and eggplant. The fish was very fresh and portions generous. Definitely a good spot for a lovely casual Japanese meal.

But we weren't the first people to arrive - the place filled up as soon as the doors opened! A large group had pre-ordered large Sashimi boats and the chef was busily preparing these when we sat down. They were stunning - a true piece of art! I ordered a Plum Wine which was delicious and sweet to start with. The menu is quite extensive, but is well organised and I think well priced for Japanese food. The Egg Omlette was the first to come out. It was quite a big serving and the egg was delicious and sweet. The Beef Tataki, which is seared beef that is still quite rare on the inside and cut into thin slices and served with a vinegar/soy dipping sauce - was absolutely to die for! The beef was so tender. The Spicy Tuna sushi rolls were very good - Tuna sashimi with a sauce. It wasn't as spicy as I had assumed, but still very nice. 6 pieces of sushi on the plate, with ginger and wasabi. We had ordered a dish that was Japanese Beef rolls with Vegetables. I can't remember the Japanese name of it, but dear lord, this was totally amazing. It was marinated beef slices that were in a thick sweet marinade/sauce. This is a must try dish! I had read a recommendation for the Nasu Dengaku - grilled eggplant with miso - and this was one of the highlights of the meal. The eggplant was cooked to perfection - the flesh so soft and creamy - and the miso on top was super tasty. You can eat the flesh and skin of the eggplant, it was so well cooked. Other people at my table ordered the Teriyaki Chicken and Chicken Katsu as their meals. Just remember to order a bowl of rice, as they don't come with rice automatically. The service was great at Hosokawa and the food was prepared and served very quickly. I can highly recommend this place for dinner, but you definitely need to book at weekends as it gets very busy!

Its now one of three and probably soon to be four, as development on another site on Oxford Street seems to indicate, yet another Japanese Restaurant. Sushi Mura is not Japanese/Chinese fusion like Yum Yum Gyoza House, and has a wide selection of dishes you would typically find at a Japanese restaurant on their menu. From Sushi through to mixed sushi boxes, Salads, Japanese U-don soups, various Curries and of course Teriyaki options. There's room for dining-in and inside (which is larger than Yum Yum Gyoza House) there's an aesthetically calm feel to the space. Simple low hanging pendant lights and the natural colours of the wooden floors (& matching tables), and with the use of black chairs giving form and definition. The service is friendly and full of smiles. Always wins points with me. The food can't really be faulted either. I like Japanese food. I am a fan of their Teriyaki chicken bento box, which comes standard with rice, miso soup and salad. The spring rolls and calamari were great too. In terms of pricing, its not too bad, and yes I do think its "value-for-money". However, If I had to compare Sushi Mura to Yum Yum Gyoza House, the latter slightly wins on this criteria. All-in-all, Bulimbarians and east-siders in general should feel lucky they are spoilt for choice when it comes to Japanese cuisine.

It's a mystery how we'd never come across Tsuru before, as they've been around since 2009, with a cafe in Ashgrove, Albany Creek, Manly West, West End & now Cannon Hill. The Cannon Hill cafe (@ 29 Southgate Avenue) has a calm ambience, & lots of natural colours. The staff greet you with a friendly "Hello" & a welcoming smile so you immediately feel at home. The menu is extensive with so many options to choose from including gluten free. So, we decided on 1) gingered pork belly roll sushi with cucumber, capsicum, & sesame seeds (4 @$7.80) 2) soft shell crab roll sushi with cucumber, sweet chilli mayo, avocado & flying fish roe (4 @$7.80) 3) tsukune "chicken meatballs" (2 @ $6.80) & 4) tsuru fried rice with tofu, eggs & vegetables ($11.80) 5) Teriyaki chicken salad ($12.80) What can we say. Officially one of our favourite Japanese cafes. Casual dining & meals at its gratifying best! It can get quite busy & with everything made fresh to order, there's a slight wait, but it is totally worth it. So for a fresh & healthier meal that satisfies, definitely check out Tsuru sushi cafe. The cafe at Cannon Hill is open Mon- Wed 8am - 8:30pm, Thur - Sat 8am - 9pm, Sun 8:30am - 8pm.

We heard it had opened and decided to give it a crack for lunch. We went a bit overboard and got crispy chicken sushi with avocado and mayonnaise, temperature tempura vegetables, miss soup, gyoza, and chicken karrage. All dishes were fantastic (especially the sushi) and definitely echelons above your food court sushi place. I deliberately avoided the seafood as I had no idea what the quality would be like however I am looking forward to giving it a go soon. I m am very very happy to have another great place within a 5 minute drive from home. Tsuru is another example of how Brisbane is growing up in the culinary world.

Wide selection of fresh made sushi rolls, nigri, entree items (gyoza, prawn parcels, chicken karaage bites etc), premium items, desserts and miso soup on the sushi train, but you can also order from the menu. Tried a mini tempura prawn udon bowl soup for $8.00 and it was awesome. Brown rice and black rice sushi rolls on the train and lots of vegetarian options. They have a little takeaway window at the front of the restaurant with sushi rolls for a quick takeaway lunch. The chefs work fast, and all items on the sushi train are fresh, fresh, fresh. I didn't know where, so once again, I used Urbanspoon, since it seems to be the foodie search engine here (rather than Yelp, though Yelp is rising!), and I found Kotobuki. Kotobuki is located near other casual open-air restaurants in a mini "food court" - which wasn't at all what I expected. What it did have is trinkets near the service counter, which I found cute and very Japanese, even though the chairs, tables, and dining ware were ordinary. I got the tempura udon, though I did contemplate on getting a sushi roll for a while. The udon was nice and "Q" and the soup base wasn't too salty (which tends to happen at restaurants), but I didn't like the tempura that much. It wasn't crispy at all by the time it got to me, which it should be at least by the time it reaches the table, and they were smaller-looking pieces of veggies and shrimp. The takoyaki was also alright, but they did load a generous amount of condiments on top. The place isn't expensive, so I don't have much to complain about, but since this place is a bit out of the way for me, I personally would stick to Noodle & Donburi.
