DoubleTree by Hilton Hull - Guest room

    DoubleTree by Hilton Hull

I stayed at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hull during my recent trip to the city, the hotel is generally…read moregood value, and often falls below £100, making it a useful hotel to book if you need a couple of stays to secure status for another year, or if you fancy a trip away and don't fancy booking a cheaper Hampton. The hotel opened in 2017, and it still feels fairly new and modern, it is in a good location within the city centre, and it's just a couple of minutes down the street from the Hull Paragon (railway and bus station) and St Stephen's (shopping centre). I stayed at the hotel for one night, towards the end of September 2023. I was pleased to be upgraded to a Junior Suite as a Diamond Hilton Honors member, I did find the room to be a little small for a suite, but still, I was reasonably impressed with my room for a one-night stay, but may not have wanted to be there much longer. Being a corner room, the bed and TV were at an angle, and the sofa, while comfortable, was at the end of the bed, which would make it impossible to sit on the sofa and watch the TV. I was unimpressed with the amenities within the room, especially for a suite. The room didn't have a fridge, and there were also no slippers (strangely robes were provided). The bathroom was also a huge negative, it was difficult to use the shower without the glass panel swinging into me as it wouldn't stay still. They also seem to use wall-mounted toiletries now which seems to be the new norm, which I just think is cheap and tacky. Bring back the little bottles and bar soap! Combined with the water pressure, it easily became one of the worst hotel showers I've used. The hotel did seem reasonably quiet considering I stayed on a Friday night, with average hotel noise. My bed was comfortable however the pillows were on their last legs, and even after requesting extra ones, they weren't comfortable at all. Do be careful when visiting the hotel due to the early times for their fire alarm and check-out, the weekly fire alarm test is at 1130 on a Friday morning, and check-out is at 11 a.m, I do feel the fire alarm test especially should be in the afternoon. The staff seemed to be what made the hotel, they were very friendly and helpful and assisted me at numerous points during my stay. I was offered my bottled water and the Doubletree cookie when checking in at the front desk. They also offered me the use of a communal fridge at Reception for my milk, again not a great solution as having to go downstairs whenever I wanted it was annoying when I wanted to relax. I was also given a free drink voucher to use in the hotel bar, which entitled me to a glass of beer, wine, or a single house spirit and mixer (which I opted for), the bar didn't have much atmosphere, but I did visit in the afternoon before getting my train. The bar tender used a full coca cola as a mixer, meaning I couldn't even taste the Jack Daniels, it just tasted like sweet cola and nothing else. I ordered breakfast to the room, which came at a £5 tray charge, the hanger to order Breakfast in the room only goes up until 10 - 1030 am, even though they serve Breakfast until 11 am on a weekend, even after calling Reception they were unsure if they'd be able to do breakfast in the room at that time, eventually I had to stress it was my only option and he promised he would personally take care of it when the catering team arrived in the morning - he did deliver on this promise, but I felt uncertain. The portion size at breakfast was poor, I was given two small glasses of orange juice, the food quality was fine, and the hash browns were particularly good. although I didn't like the bacon. 3* - Overall, some positives for sure about this hotel, all in all for the price it's reasonable, but a lot of flaws, and I wouldn't return, at least until they put fridges in the rooms. All in all, if you're unlucky enough to be in the city of Hull (I wasn't a fan of the city as a tourist), this is probably one of the better places to stay out of a limited bad bunch.

Clean, New and Comfortable…read more I ended-up staying at several hotels while in Hull for two weeks for business and this one is my favorite. Location was great. You're located in downtown Hull, within walking distance to anything one could want; many shopping centers, Queens Garden, The Marina, Old Town and even the train station. I stayed in room 416 and it was impeccably clean, a huge must. Amenities included hairdryer, safe, lots of cubbies for clothes, tea/coffee bar, bathroom necessities and laundry services are available. Also, having good WIFI was a must, and I was never dropped or had strength problems during my five night stay. The staff was great, very helpful and friendly, both front desk and in the restaurant. They would call you a taxi; for some reason not all hotels would do this. Only con is the restaurant is quite pricey, but there are several great restaurants within walking distance, so almost a mute point. If I have to come to Hull again, I would most definitely stay here.

Carl Simpson, founder of the Raise the Roof Hull Project, crowdfunded more than £1,000 ($1,260) so that 28 homeless people could stay at the Royal Hotel in Hull, northern England, for two nights over the festive period. But Simpson says the hotel canceled the booking over the weekend without giving any explanation, throwing the project into disarray. In a Facebook post, Simpson said he was "absolutely gutted and very angry" at the sudden cancellation of 14 twin rooms on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. "I asked for a reason and was told there isn't one," Simpson wrote in the post. "Our Xmas hotel campaign is now in serious doubt being so close to Xmas we need a miracle," he added. Hayley Harrington, director of Raise the Roof, told CNN the hotel was made fully aware the booking was for a homeless project. "They said it was fantastic but on Saturday we received a phone call from the hotel saying the room was canceled. They didn't give us any reasons," Harrington said. "We checked online and there were still rooms available. This is just discrimination." Last year, the homeless charity booked Hull's Ibis hotel for the same project. "It was fantastic and everyone enjoyed it but they didn't have enough twin rooms available to keep everyone together his year," Harrington said. CNN contacted Royal Hotel, which is part of the Britannia group, on Monday but was told nobody was able to comment. The hotel has also deleted its Facebook page.

I booked it for the location only and although I knew that it was a bit shabby, the hotel was very disappointing. Not recommended. On the positive side, our standard double room was very spacious, both the bedroom and the private bathroom. The bed quality was poor and our sleep suffered. Walls were very thin. We were talking to each other in the room at a normal level when another guest banged on our door telling us to "shut the **** up". The hotel is not in the best part of town, either. Showering was unpleasant. The shower curtain did not repel water at all, so the bathroom floor was covered in water after every shower as the water simply traveled through the curtain. The bathtub was a huge step up from the floor so it was a slipping hazard getting in and out. I said that getting in and out of the shower was the most dangerous thing I did in Hull. The showerhead sprayed water in many directions and it always got in my eyes. When I tried calling the front desk on several different occasions, it rang forever with no answer. Our room keycard randomly stopped working and we were unable to get in our room. When we went back to the lobby, we were told that the cards "sometimes do this" and they gave us a new one. As travelers, we were on a very tight schedule and it's an unpleasant surprise to be locked out of the room without warning. The hot breakfast, which I purchased included with the stay, was poor. Breakfast hours are 7:00am to 9:00am (as of July 2015), which I found convenient. However, the full English breakfast tasted so bad that I didn't even eat it the next day. Everything tasted like it was frozen or from a tin. The continental breakfast they offer is passable though: packaged pastries, yogurt, cereal, toast, juice, tea and coffee. The breakfast waitstaff were attentive and the breakfast room is pleasant, however. I would look elsewhere especially if you are looking for a nice, classy, romantic hotel which is what Kingston Theatre tries to sell itself as.

The first problem was when our group arrived and one of our party was told that they hadn't got a room despite the fact we had actually booked 2 months in advance! They didn't seem bothered and when we said what about the 3 rooms that we had cancelled a couple of days before they said that they had all been taken. The attitude was just go and find somewhere else and because the person on reception hadn't taken the bookings didn't really care less. When we suggested that the hotel (as it was there fault) should make an effort to find somewhere else we were met with indifference but after a while they did offer to provide a couple of other hotels phone numbers for US to call! The hotel is in quite an old building and it shows. They have made some effort to modernise. The rooms are tidy and functional, I think you would be ok just staying the odd night or 2 but not much longer. Other members of staff were a bit more friendly. The meal was ok and service quite efficent. There is also a well stocked bar. Handy for the theatre I imagine?

However, my hotel room had a widescreen LG TV, but unfortunately there was no cable and no satellite TV; just Freeview only. I'm afraid to say.
