Happy and excited children running everywhere and there was even a moment when everyone started singing the carols! The tree and Christmas Tower were lovely and I'm so glad we had the opportunity to learn all about it. It's also a great place for photos, or just enjoying the lights with your family.

This cemetery runs along Barons Creek and is hidden from view from Highway 290 just a couple of…read moreblocks away. It was established in 1846 and there are quite literally thousands of interments here. This is a very orderly, well-maintained cemetery which has different sections. The vast majority of graves are surrounded by neat and orderly concrete borders. Three sections of the cemetery are completely covered in concrete, while the other sections have earth and grass separating the interment sites. You'll find one area near the entrance where many graves are surrounded by the original ironworks of the early 20th century. At the back of the cemetery is a section where victims of the Spanish flu were buried enmass at the turn of the century. There is also an African-American section, but there is little in the way of representation of those graves. Also, near the rear of the property is a section reserved for infants and children. After talking with one of the volunteers who care for the grounds, there will eventually be a website and hopefully a chapel coming in the next couple of years. Currently, there is no kiosk or information booth pertaining to who is buried where on the property. It was disappointing not to be able to tour one of the site's main attractions, but there was still plenty to see and enjoy. One of the highlights was driving through the grounds and surrounding area. The route was scenic and offered a nice look at the Texas Hill Country. We also saw lots of cows along the way, which added to the charm and made the drive feel like a genuine Texas experience. Even without access to the Texas White House, I found the site worth visiting. The combination of history, open landscapes, and the relaxed driving tour made for an enjoyable stop. I would recommend it, though visitors should check ahead to see whether any areas are closed for renovation.

During Johnson's administration, the LBJ Ranch was known as the Texas White House because the President spent approximately 20% of his time in office there. Johnson donated the ranch in his will to the public to form the park, with the provision that it "remain a working ranch." You can see his birthplace home, school house, the cemetary where he and his family are buried, the show stables, his prized Hereford cows, and even his downsized "Airforce one-Half" Across the street at the state park you can see the home and building of the Johnson's neighbors, the Sauer--Beckmanns in the living history farm area. The folks that work there seem to love to tell history of the place and encourage you to look around. Random nugget... have the staff point out to you the "judges stairwell". This building was once the courthouse. Fascinating find for history and library lovers.

So many amenities are over 20 miles away from Harper.
