If a…read morecavalier attitude about the appearance of impropriety or being willing to subvert the will of Maine voters to achieve a business goal doesn't bother you, then this is the firm for you! A staffer at Rudman Winchell recently posed as a 'concerned neighbor' to interfere in a vote on a town ordinance by writing a letter to the local paper full of misinformation in support of one of the firm's clients, whose interests would be affected by the outcome. This could not have happened without their knowledge. The lies were bad enough, but the concealment backfired. The advice they provided their clients was not effective; public sentiment went against them. The client claimed in public remarks that the staffer had been let go prior to writing the letter but there's no evidence to support that, nor would that make her any less of an associate. But all that pales in comparison with their initial strategy, to push their client's proposal past an ordinance which was clearly meant to prohibit projects over a certain size. They built a house of cards on the existence of a minor wording error. Be warned.
