We were originally holding off on posting this review to try and maintain a level of professionalism with Mr Gibson and his crew and even give them a 2nd chance after a horrible encounter but its clear we need to look for service business elsewhere. Back in November, 2025 we brought our car in for a cata converter replacement, we had the converter ordered in advance and during the times we had the quote generated which was $1,500+ we were given verbal promises that the car would be done same day. First day? It was not completed the same day as promised. They then said they would have the car fixed by lunch time at the latest TOMORROW, tomorrow lunch comes around? Still not done. 3rd day we got law enforcement involved to get a proper update/record as we did not have a spare vehicle to get back and forth to work and were getting fed up with the excuses, this is when Mr Gibson himself showed his ugly side and began his verbal assault towards us mocking us in front of his entire team and had embarrassingly brought us to the wrong vehicle in the bay that wasn't even ours while screaming at us. It took 3 full days and a little extra time as they stayed after close to get the vehicle done before we could finally leave their shop. They had 1 single mechanic working on the vehicle for the first 2 days and only on the 3rd day realized they needed to put more hands on the job. We were suppose to have another service order for an oil housing unit repair on our vehicle but we will not be coming back as its clear Mr Gibson and his crew are just not the right fit for us after speaking to them again today. Overall horrible experience, rude, snotty attitude from the front office ladies, and even ruder unruly behavior from the guys behind the ladies. read more

New to Abingdon, needed VA inspection on two vehicles. They did a great job getting them done quickly!

Overpriced. Numerous visits for different jobs. Last visit will be my LAST visit. Every job required one to two visits back to fix it again, only to find out it was misdiagnosed to start with, therefore costing more for the poor job than it should have cost. They charge for unnecessary work. Final straw was asking for an inspection while my vehicle was there for a repair only to get a call to tell me it would not because the tires were bald but that they could replace them for me for way more that tires should cost. They finished that overpriced job. I picked it up and drove to another inspection station who passed my vehicle. When I asked that inspector about the tires, he check the tire depth with a gauge and gave them a second look and asked confusingly asked me what were my concerns. Gibson's is located in a town that has a lot of old money. They take advantage of that and prey on those that won't question their high estimates. I will NEVER go there again. read more

If I could give them zero stars, I would. Avoid these people like the plague! My experience with Gibson's was absolutely horrible. I dropped my van off there for an inspection last week, and they called and told me that my vehicle failed inspection because the engine needed new mount clips, which they quoted as costing me $875. First of all, engine mount clips are not part of state inspection. Secondly, when I called back and explained that I wasn't going to pay that much for engine mount clips, they suddenly were able to knock off $200. Without paying that still exorbitant price, I picked up my car and took it to another mechanic, who inspected my car and told me that after running my engine backwards and forwards with my car on a vehicle lift, there was nothing wrong with my engine mounts. He also informed me that Gibson's routinely looks for ways to rip people off. The other mechanic didn't even charge me anything for checking my vehicle, and guess what? It passed state inspection just fine. I HOPE THAT GIBSON'S GOES OUT OF BUSINESS. read more

I'm not a local. My 2000 F-250 5.4L blew a sparkplug on the highway. Gibson's got me in the next day. The whole time they kept braying about how they were putting me ahead of other customers and were going out of their way to help me out. I get that my need to get back on the road inconvenienced them, but you only have to tell me 4 or 5 times before I really catch on. Mentioning it at the beginning of every sentence was a little excessive. At any rate, when I dropped the truck off with them, I told the mechanic that I had a spark plug and coil pack from O'Reilly's auto parts. The mechanic told me that they don't use customer provided parts. Note: didn't say they "usually don't" Just said "we don't do that". I said, OK, I can always return them. They did the work (drilled out the spark plug hole, threaded it, installed a helicoil and replaced the spark plug and coil pack...pretty standard repair). Strangely, when I picked up the truck, they told me "we used the parts you brought, so we can't guarantee how long the repair will last", they had me sign a waiver saying I understand that and the work order even said "used customer parts, no guarantee". Notably, they never asked me if that was OK or explained to me the ramifications before doing it, they just did it and told me after the fact. I just assumed that they couldn't get the parts that day and so used my parts to get me on the road quicker. At first I appreciated it. So, on down the road I go...for about an hour, then "bang". Blew a plug again. Pulled over and looked. Same plug. So I limped it to another mechanic in Salem, they took one look and told me that the last place (Gibson's) had screwed it up. It wasn't the parts that failed, they drilled the hole crooked and then put the helicoil in too deep. It looked like they couldn't get the spark plug back in easily so they squirted some JB weld on the threads and used an impact driver to force it in. When it blew again, there's a visible gap between the spark plug threads and the hole in the head, but the spark plug is glued in there, at an angle, and so deep they can't even get a socket on it. Basically, the head is toast, so a repair that normally costs about $250 turned into a $3000 repair. I didn't take that mechanic's word as gospel, I took it to another reputable mechanic in Salem and got a second opinion. I didn't tell them what the other mechanic said, just asked them to take a look. They said almost verbatim what the other mechanic said. Gibson's screwed it up. In my opinion, they knew they screwed it up and that's why they used the parts I provided even after telling me flat out they don't do that. That gave them the out. They jury rigged it to get it running long enough to get my money and get me out of their lot, but had me sign a waiver so they couldn't be held responsible. After I got estimates for how much it was going to cost to repair Gibson's crappy work, I called Gibson's, explained what was going on and asked to speak to a service manager. The receptionist said the manager would call me back. Crickets. So, now I'm just trying to spread the word. I can't say Gibson's doesn't sometimes do good work because they've got some good reviews on here, but in my opinion, they knowingly screwed up my truck, jury rigged it to hide their screw up from me, tricked me into signing a waiver to absolve them for the screw up and then have refused to accept responsibility for their crappy work. Not the hallmarks of a business you can trust. Live and Learn. read more

About a year ago I took my car in for State Inspection. I was impressed by the staff who were very helpful. Because of this I took my car in to have the rear wheel bearing replaced. Josh was extremely helpful. It was not an easy job and he kept me informed during the job. He went above and beyond in dealing with a difficult job. Ok service, however, Gibson charged me 59.95 for engine light diagnostic. This was after paying for brakes, front rotors, and inspection. total charge was $500. There is no reason to gouge for check engine light diagnostic, especially since I paid good money for other services. Do not ever take your car to this place. After 2 weeks and several parts being put on I obviously did not need, they still have not fixed my car. I continually had to call them, they promised to call me but did not. They finally told me it was fixed. It cost me over $700. I picked it up on a sat, on sun it stranded me again with the exact same issue. I tried to contact them, and again they did not call me back. I've now had to have the car towed to the Nissan dealership to get it fixed. To sum up, I have paid almost $1000 between towing and parts I did not need and my car is still not running, with no effort from Gibson's to make it right. read more

Simply the absolute best, in service , honesty and price. Last however not least I have ALWAYS been a authorized dealer man... but after my first visit here (last year) and realizing that the management not only cared....But they were accessible to explain everything that is needed and why. No sugarcoating. Moreover they were simply honest... this is an extremely rare attribute...in Auto Repair. I've tried all the other shops, including authorized dealers in the Tri-Cities area who now are more concerned with what flavor cappuccino you prefer then your overall satisfaction and understanding of your vehicle's issue. Broke down in Abingdon and was sent to this establishment. Quick service but was way overcharged. Don't go here!!!!

I took my vehicle in for a transmission service. I thought there might be some other issues and explained to them what was going on. The mechanic took the time to explain what the issue was, why it was happening and what it would cost. I feel other shops would have used scare tactics to get me to do a repair that wasn't necessary at the time. I have suggested the shop to my family members for their maintnance needs. read more

I work in Abingdon, VA and I had someone recommend Gibson's Service Center to me as my mechanic. I took my vehicle there after getting a sky high estimate from another place. To my surprise, Gibson's beat the other guy's price all to pieces. I was very satisfied with their work and I have now recommended them to my friends. read more
